Rationale (200 words) With the intention of starting a brand design practice after leaving university, the majority of my chosen briefs will focus on brand design it is an area of design I (and Luke) seem to engage with most. I ultimately want to develop my understanding of brand theory and awareness therefore the briefs I have chosen will allow me to do so. I also want to explore iconography, as through selfinitiated projects, I have developed an interest with icon design so I intend to develop it further. I aim to improve my typography skills (through designing a font and exploring publication design) and intend on creating several typefaces as part of a collaboration brief with Max and Yaf this brief in particular is relatively heavy, with a lot of proposed design outcomes. Alongside typography and layout, it provides an opportunity to investigate print processes and production, explore publication and layout design and ultimately improve our presentation skills. Web design is an area of design I have somewhat ignored so I intend to focus on design for screen within some of the branding projects I have chosen. The film magazine brief will utilise the research I complete for my dissertation and vice versa as I will be investigating independent film through both. Over the course of the year, Luke and me will develop the brand identity for Formula our collaborative studio practice. Promotion of our studio is essential therefore we intend to take on several live projects, potentially in - but mostly outside - of university to gain more of an insight into client interaction, the financial aspects and ultimately dealing with a live project from start to end. I ultimately want to create a professional body of work that defines and best represents me as a designer.

Statement of Intent (SOI) - (400 words)

In week 1, I will begin initial research and investigation for all of my 4 chosen briefs. For Formula, I will start looking into existing competitors. For Type, we will explore initial design ideas in relation to branding. For the museum rebrand, I will research into the museum itself its audience, brand awareness and its overarching brand identity; and for the film magazine, I will research into independent film as an umbrella genre and devise a name for the magazine itself so I can begin the brand identity phase. In week 2, I will continue research and begin initial design development for the Formula branding; refine the brand identity & start a blog for the Type collaboration; research for the museum rebrand in more depth and continue with concept development; and spend more time researching into content for the film magazine whilst also starting initial design development. I will also explore product range for all 4 briefs to ensure I know what exactly I intend to create (though this may change In week 3, the type project officially starts once the brand identity is refined and finalised. We will have a chosen theme and start the investigation through contextual references. The initial concept development phase will also begin with all 3 of us devising initial design ideas. We will have a more refined brand identity for the Formula brief and begin to collate more references for our brand collateral and start devising the copy for our website and promotional materials. For the museum rebrand, I will have a refined proposed logo and continue with the research. I will have a final logo design for the film magazine and continue with research and contextual referencing. In week 4, the dissertation will be my primary focus though the 4 briefs will continue in the background. For Formula, there will be on-going research and sourcing references so we can begin to devise initial ideas for our promotional materials. We will begin the design development for our typeface in the type collaboration and there will be continued investigation into our theme. I will start to explore ideas for the museum rebrand promotional materials and advertising whilst continuing research for the film magazine I will utilise the research I complete for the dissertation for the content of the magazine (and vice versa) as they both centre on independent film. In week 5, we will begin to expand on our initial concept development for the Formula promotional materials and start to refine our ideas through design development. We will also collate content for the site and design initial layout ideas to eventually send through to a web developer. We will continue using our 4 week time plan for each font in the type collaboration and this week will be spent primarily translating our font into Fontographer (potentially with the help of a font expert) and start thinking about the prints and type specimen. I will start to develop my initial ideas for the brand and promotional materials for the museum rebrand and look at ideas for advertising and potential initiatives (i.e. for education and within the community). I will begin to develop the designs for the film magazine and explore layout concepts whilst still researching into content and collating information. In week 6, we will hope to have refined designs for the Formula brand materials to go to print and ensure we start (and potentially finalise) the web layout. However, we will continue to look at various other means of promotion, as this will continue throughout the year. For the type collaboration, we will have a completed and keyable typeface that we would then apply to various prints and a final type specimen all of which will be posted to the blog. I will continue the design and product development for the museum rebrand and design & develop the layout ideas for the film magazine. I will also look at potential cover designs. Week 7, 8, 9 and 10 will primarily be designing final resolutions, collating information, printing, finalising any loose ends and provide time for anything else that might arise.

A research driven investigation of the independent film industry with a focus on editorial design. I am going to create & print a self-initiated independent film magazine as the brief will allow me to investigate print production and specification, explore my type and layout skills and create a brand identity across a range of media (including a proposed ebook & app). It will also provide research which I could utilise within my dissertation (and vice versa). Products Brand identity (logo design & ?typeface?) We are going to explore and investigate type design within our surroundings to ultimately create our own set of typefaces and accompanying prints / type specimen publications it will allow us to develop our typographic skills and provide the opportunity to create a fully functioning font. We will also experiment and explore publication design, print processes and print production. Products Brand identity (Form & Writing) Monthly font design Online resource (blog) documenting contextual references Font specimen (publication) Prints using fonts Range Brand identity applied to a range of media (online delivery, printed publications) Monthly typeface based on a pre-determined theme Set of prints using the fonts we create Distribution Type events & talks (hand out promotional materials) Online delivery and through social media Design blogs or potentially publications
