Rotary Bangalore Jeevanbimanagar enters Hall of Fame

By Rtn. Veeraraghavan The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit organization within Rotary International, and is the financial arm of Rotary International. It has a very simple and noble motto Doing Good in the World. TRF receives funds from Rotarians, patrons and well-wishers all over the world. Contributions to the Rotary Foundation support a wide range of sustainable activities in the areas of: Peace and conflict prevention/ resolution Disease prevention and treatment Water and sanitation Maternal and child health Basic education and literacy Economic and community development

from $1001 upto $9999 is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow (MPHF). The one who gives $10000 is a Major Donor and so on it goes. The highest recognition is Arch Klumph Society for a sum of $250000, and there are a few Indians on this prestigious list. Lakshmi Mittal, Rajshree Birla, Vinay Kulkarni are some of the names that are in this list, having contributed $1million to TRF. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged $355 million to the Polio Fund, on a assurance of TRF raising $200 million, which has been instrumental in the final war against Polio. A Rotary Club in which all members are Paul Harris Fellows, i.e. have contributed a minimum of $1000 to the TRF, is certified as a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Cub, and in the Rotary language, said to enter The Hall of Fame. Rotary Bangalore Jeevanbimanagar, reached this important milestone during the year 11-12. Apart from every member being a Paul Harris Fellow, we also had Rtn. Ganesh Swaminathan (President of Rotary Year 11-12) becoming a Major Donor having contributed a sum of $10000. These recognitions essentially mean that members of the Club have contributed around Rs. 25 lacs to the Foundation for Doing Good in the World. And with such contributions from over 1.2 million Rotarians and Well-wishers, Rotary expects to take up many more challenges like Polio Eradication.

TRF has a practice of giving recognition to all those who donate generously. In the name of Rotarys founder, Paul Harris, TRF has created different levels of recognition, depending on the extent of contribution. A Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) is one who has contributed a sum of $1000 to TRF. And one who gives

Rotary Bangalore Jeevanbimanagar Vision of a Peaceful World - A broad perspective

(Peace through Service) By Rtn. G. Boolchand The world is filled with discouraging news. We hear about war, violence and despair around the world. There are internal conflicts and killings within countries and with other countries. Let us look what separates us- greed, ego, culture, religion or politics. Politics dominates all aspects of our social life. The influence of politics percolates in every sphere of lifehealth, culture, language, education, trade, administration, justice and promotion of science and technology. In dictatorship, public opinion is moulded by the dictator. In a democracy, public opinion plays a vital role, yet people are influenced by factors like caste, region, religion, or personal relationship. Many political leaders around the world have let their countries down. But the world can change- peace is not an unattainable goal. We need to share our thoughts about what peace means to us in our lives, and how to work towards it. It is a place to begin to understand one another a little better, and to build bridges across the continents that can help us all to come together. Anatomy of Peace At basic level, peace is generally defined as a state of quiet or tranquillity. To an individual, peace is absence of mental stress or anxiety- a state of quietness, serenity and tranquillity. At higher level, in the context of a State or Country, peace is an absence of disturbances or agitation, prevalence of law and ordera state of harmony characterized by lack of violent conflicts. At global level, in still broader context, viz pan- World scenario-peace is freedom from wars, or a stopping of war or other hostilities. The fog of wars spread across globe is due to intentions of certain groups or class of people to dominate over the underprivileged masses. Ever since the dawn of human history, exploitation of man by man has followed more or less similar pattern. The philosophy of exploitation of the weaker itself is the root cause of all conflicts and wars. This has been the basis on which the boundaries of countries have been drawn. Even in democracy, there is erosion of faith in political systems ability or even willingness to address urgent issues: peoples upliftment, law and order, and sense of peace and prosperity. Any peaceful social order is possible only if all citizens Faithfully perform their duties towards others. Nature needs a balance. Science without ethics, intellect without sensitivity, technology sane spirituality cannot achieve global peace and welfare. Peace and happiness is possible only if certain balance is maintained among the various facets of our existence. However, peace is far too precious and fragile, it demands continuous vigilance. In an ideal setup, the progressive class need feel the responsibility of upliftment and progress of the underprivileged people. However, in any society the number of competent and progressive class, which is in

Souvenir 2012-13

minority, is required to take up the responsibilities to provide guidance to the underprivileged class and cater to its need of reformation and social upliftment. Unlike in the medieval period, the strategies in present times have changed- with a camouflaging of principles or sinister designs. There perpetually exists a suppressed desire amongst the vulnerable class to become more powerful and stand in revolt against this domination. Moments of threat or adverse circumstances appear over the horizon. Rotary-an adventure in Service Rotary International (RI) is the worlds first service club organization with over 32000 clubs across 170 countries and geographical areas. The motto of RI is SERVICE above self . Let us pause and recall some of yearly Themes of past RI Presidents over the last 3 to 4 decades- Service to unite Mankind; Let Service Light the way; World Understanding & Peace through Rotary; Mankind is one- Build Bridges of Friendship throughout the World; Discover a New World of Service; Real Happiness in helping others, Act with Integrity, Serve with Love, Work for Peace; Building Communities Bridging Continents; Reach Within to Embrace Humanity; and Peace through Service. Rotary has been providing service to humanity across world through various avenues of Service. There are five Ds in a Rotarian life- devotion, determination, diligent, decision and discipline. Rotary also broadens understanding of all Rotarians to Reach Out and 4-way Test focuses on ethical dealings and focus energy to serve mankind. RI has kindled with enthusiasm and zeal to over 1.2 million Rotarians across five continents to transform their own lives and the society as a whole. Peace through Service Peace is not about everyone believing the same things, and it is not about everyone doing the same thing. It is about making room for different ideas to thrive and believing that we can all gain from understanding one another better. Peace is to be created, in order to be maintained. It is the product of faith, strength, energy, will, sympathy, justice, imagination and the triumph of principles. It will never be achieved by passivity and quietness. During the last two decades, everywhere in the world, unimaginable revolutionary changes have taken placepolitical, financial and educational fields. The Rotary action Peace through Service can stop global confrontation and bring about humanity to survive in peace for a long time. In Rotary- Service is a way of life thereby fostering spirit of sharing, goodwill for others and peace. Rotary provides service without differential treatment of man on the basis of caste, class, religion or gender. RY 2012-2013, the focus and goal of Rotary is Peace through Service. We embrace Peace through Service and strive peace for ourselves and for our world. This competent and progressive class though in minority can create significant impact in World Peace scenario through its dedicated Service. This page sponsored by Rtn. Abhishek Ranjan

PETS AND QUALITY OF LIFE

By Dr. P. Meenakshi Almost anyone you speak to, regardless of age, gender or inclinations, has their own fond memory, or story of a pet to share. The value of pets in improving the quality of life is widely recognized. Pets can ease loneliness, reduce stress, promote social interaction, encourage exercise and playfulness, and provide us with unconditional love and affection. Pets can affect mood and health of people and add structure and routine to your day. Studies have shown that Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets. People with pets have lower blood pressure in stressful situations than those without pets. Playing with a pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax. Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels (indicators of heart disease) than those without pets. Heart attack patients with pets survive longer than

Pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets. A pet doesn't have to be a dog or a cat. Even watching fish in an aquarium can help reduce muscle tension and pulse rate.

One of the reasons for these therapeutic effects is that most pets fulfill the basic human need to touch. Stroking, holding, cuddling, or otherwise touching a loving animal can rapidly calm and soothe us when we're stressed. The companionship of a pet can also ease loneliness, and some pets are a great stimulus for healthy exercise, which can substantially boost mood. Many pets, especially dogs, require a regular feeding and exercise schedule. No matter your mooddepressed, anxious, or stressed-you'll always have to get out of bed to feed, exercise, and care for your pet. However one must realize that having a pet is not a miracle cure for mental illness. Owning a pet is beneficial and comforting only for those who love and appreciate domestic animals. If you're simply not a pet person, pet ownership is not going to provide you with any therapeutic benefits or improve your life.

A Decade of Service
By Rtn. Veeraraghavan A few friends, meeting often, sharing thoughts, trying to do something constructive: This was the beginning of a movement that has continued for over a hundred years. They used to meet regularly in each others house in rotation. And that is how the name Rotary evolved. Even today the essence of our club is the same. It is a few individuals meeting regularly, sharing their feelings and thoughts, enjoying the company of each other, and trying to do something constructive in a cooperative spirit. About 80 such clubs work together as District 3190, and a few hundred such districts guided by the headquarters is the Global Rotary Movement. What can a few individuals do to make a difference to society? Well, they can eradicate a dreaded disease like Polio from the face of the earth. They have been at it for over 25 years, and during this period nearly 10 million people have been saved the life of a cripple. And as is usual in all Rotary Projects, they have fostered cooperation among governments, and international organizations to this cause. And the Rotarians actively participate at the ground level in the immunization booths. Major long term projects like Polio Eradication are conceived and coordinated at the global level. The funding for these activities of the Foundation comes from individual Rotarians and well-wishers. Each one of us contributes some amount every year to the foundation, and these amounts are contributed voluntarily. The amount itself will vary from person to person and year to year. Each of our members is a Paul Harris Fellow, a recognition awarded when the contribution is 1000$, and our immediate Past president is a Major Donor, a recognition awarded when the contribution is 10000$. A variety of projects are conceived and coordinated at the District level, in order to get the benefits of scale of operations and yet remain sensitive to the unique needs of the region. The funding of the projects is partly by way of grants from the foundation, resources raised by the district, and the individual club. Examples of such projects would be heart surgery, cataract surgery, solar lighting, rainwater harvesting etc. Our club actively participates in such projects, and has enabled heart surgeries, cataract surgeries, Solar lighting for Girls hostel, Drinking water for schools, Dictionary distribution etc., and has for the current year planned low cost housing for the poor. At the club level, one of our focus areas is Blood Donation. We organize blood donation camps in industrial and educational establishments. About 1500 units (on an average) are collected in these camps every year. The blood collected is processed at the Rotary TTK Blood bank, and each unit of blood after

segregation into components benefits three persons. We are proud to have played a role in benefiting ten needy persons, somewhere, someplace, every day. Another focus area of club projects is government school children. The projects here could be very small like Purchase of food containers for receiving and handling food from Akshraya Foundation. Or they could be big, like the 5 comfort stations constructed at various Government Schools at a cost of close to one million rupees. They could be health oriented like Dental Camps and Eye Camps to identify and correct problems at an early stage. Some of these projects, such as RYLA, Essay Competition, focus on inculcating right skills and values in the children. We encourage children to form and run their own clubs (called Rotaract for college students, and Interact for school children). And we distribute Notebooks and Dictionaries to the students. Sometimes we help fulfill a missing link, like sponsoring a teacher for teaching Computer skills to the children. The Rotary movement not only serves the community but also provide Rotarians something that cannot be bought with money. This is highly intangible, difficult to describe, but something extraordinarily worthwhile. We call it the Rotary Moment and perhaps the following extract from a communication from the current RI President, Rtn. Sakuji Tanaka, will help in understanding the Rotary Momemt. But to be honest, for the first two years, we didn't do much. Every week, I came to my meeting, I ate lunch, and I listened to a speaker. I paid my dues, and I gave money to The Rotary Foundation. But I wasn't involved in any service. I didn't know what Rotary service was supposed to be. That all changed one week, when we had a speaker who talked about vocational service. This was a new idea to me. Until then, I had never thought much about the purpose of my life, or why I was in business. I was too busy working. I was always focused on my business, and on how to make it larger and better. I never stopped to consider any deeper purpose of my work. Understanding the idea of vocational service completely changed my attitude toward my work, and toward my own purpose in life. I realized that the goal of a person doing business is not only to earn a living. The purpose is to be a contributing member of the community, to make the community stronger, and to help make other people's lives better. When I understood this, and understood the concept of Service Above Self, it changed my life and set me firmly on the path to a life of Rotary service. That is my Rotary Moment. The club has completed ten years, but will continue to serve the community and its own members for decades to come. This page sponsored by Rtn. Anamika Majumder

CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS

By Dr. P. Padmakshi Every 7 minutes one woman dies of cervical cancer in India!!! Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer. In the 1 world cancer cervix stands as Number 2 of all the cancers. Each year, about 5 Lac new cases are diagnosed, and 'Deaths of about 2.75 Lac women occur. Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that affects a woman's cervix. The cervix plays a vital role in the female reproductive system, connecting the upper vagina to the uterus. During childbirth, the cervix dilates to allow the passage of a baby from the uterus to the vagina. Cervical cancer, on the other hand, is treatable with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. While these treatment options may not be pleasant, they often offer good results with the possibility of a cure. The earlier cervical cancer is detected, the better the prognosis. The primary risk factor for developing cervical is the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection that is spread through sexual, skin-to-skin contact. The virus can cause changes in cervical cells that could develop into cervical cancer if left undetected, unmonitored, or untreated. The human papilloma virus (HPV) has been a popular topic in the media since the FDA approval of Gardasil, an HPV vaccine, All of the hype has left many wondering if they are infected with HPV and how to find out if they are indeed infected and what HPV symptoms they should watch out for. There are over 100 different strains of HPV, About 30 of these strains affect both male and female genitalia causing conditions like genital warts and more seriously, cancer, Not all strain of HPV. An infected person can be a carrier of several strains of HPV concurrently, The good news is that for most people, both high and low risk HPV infections clear up without medical intervention, The strains of HPV known to cause genital warts men and woman obviously can cause genital warts to appear. These are cauliflower like growths that can appear on, in and around the genitals and surrounding areas. However, in some cases, genital warts never appear or can appear years This page sponsored by Rtn. Seshadri N A

after contracting the virus, This is why you cannot rely on the visual presence of genital warts to determine if someone is infected or not, High risk, cancer-causing strains of HPV do not generally produce symptoms, This is why a regular pap smear is vital for all women. A Pap smear can detect abnormal cervical changes caused by HPV, long before they turn cancerous. HPV is transmitted by direct skin-to skin contact. A regular wart on the skin may result from casual contact, but genital warts are generally acquired during sexual activities. Alert: It is crucial to understand that protected sexual intercourse (that is, using condoms or other barrier methods) does not prevent the HPV infection. Direct skin-to-skin contact anywhere on the body allows transmission of this virus. An infected person may have no visible wart on the skin or the genital area to remain contagious. Just because your sexual partner does not have any warts does not mean that he cannot transmit genital warts to you. A mother infected with genital warts can pass the infection to her newly born baby during labor and delivery. This condition can result in one of the most devastating conditions in children. Babies who catch the virus at birth develop warts in their throats, which require surgical removal every few weeks for more than a decade. Some children end up having more than fifty operations for this condition before the age of ten. If you have a history of genital warts and become pregnant, your baby may end up paying the price for the infection. In the early stages of cervical cancer, there are rarely any noticeable symptoms. Having a regular Pap smear can detect any early abnormal cervical changes that could lead to cervical cancer if left unmonitored or untreated, A regular Pap smear is key to early detection of early cervical changes and cervical cancer. Early cervical cancer rarely presents any symptoms. As cervical cancer progresses, symptoms begin to present themselves. Symptoms of cervical cancer include abnormal vaginal bleeding, including post-coital bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, pelvic pain, heavy vaginael discharge. These symptoms are not exclusive to cervical cancer. They can be quite common and are symptoms of other conditions. Pelvic pain is a symptom that affects many women, and

Rotary Bangalore Jeevanbimanagar

Souvenir 2012-13

can be caused by a wide variety of problems, from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) to more serious conditions, like cervical cancer. When it comes to cervical cancer, pelvic pain is experienced in the later stages of the disease. Pelvic pain is pain or pressure felt anywhere in the abdomen below the navel. Pain may be intermittent or constant. Many women describe pelvic pain as a dull ache that may include sharp pains as well. To help your doctor accurately pinpoint the cause, try to maintain a pain dairy. Note when the pain occurs, what you were doing when the pain occurred, and what helps relieve the pain. This can include laying down or taking overthe-counter medications to relieve pain. Other causes of pelvic pain can be constipation, PMS, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, endometriosis, fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease. Women who experience regular pelvic pain should have it evaluated by a physician. Mild cramping and pain associated with menstruation is normal and does not require medical attention unless it is very painful (dysmenorrhea). For most women, pelvic pain is caused by a benign condition is not cancer related.

Unlike other types of cancer, cervical cancer symptoms do not usually appear until the cancer has spread to an advanced stage. Most women do not experience symptoms that prompt them to seek medical treatment, so a regular Pap smear is essential for early detection. Because of the Pap smear test, the number of cervical cancer cases has dropped over the past twenty years. The Pap smear plays a vital role in diagnosing cervical cancer. It is how most discover they suffer from cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer. The Pap smear is a simple PAINLESS test that can reveal cervical abnormalities long before they progress into cancer. All women should have a regular Pap smear, unless their physician has advised them they no longer need one. This may also include post-menopausal women and those who have had hysterectomies. Pap smear tests should be started for all women within a year of onset of sexual activity. If Pap smear results reveal cervical abnormalities, then other follow up tests are advised. If the pap test is normal, then it is advisable to repeat it every year. BEWARE AND BE AWARE

Rotary Bangalore Jeevanbimanagar Rotary International (RI) Convention:

By Rtn. Vittal .R RI Convention is a worldwide event equivalent of Rotary District Conference at the RI District level. It brings together members of Rotary Clubs across the globe for 4 day period when they get to meet with each other, learn from each others experience, forge bonds and enjoy being together in Rotarians company. RI Convention is an annual event and is planned several years ahead. It is here that we see the RI Organization playing a vital role in organizing the event - right from choosing a venue to organizing the food, security, entertainment et al. Rtn. RadhaVittal and I were fortunate to attend the RI Convention of 2011 at New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Rtn. Boolchand also attended the said convention. The convention is generally split into plenary sessions that take place every day for about 4 hours when the RI President delivers his speech on a chosen topic of service and then some eminent persons speak on different topics. At the RI Convention 2011 at New Orleans we had the unique opportunity of hearing Bill Gates talking on the phenomenal efforts put in by Rotarians in eradicating the dreaded disease Polio from most part of the universe. Apart from the plenary sessions, other sessions on each avenue of service, development programs for Chair of each avenue of service etc., take place during the rest of the day. If the main convention hall for plenary sessions accommodates 20,000 delegates, there is an equally big hall that houses Rotary House of Friendship. One can spend days together at the House of Friendship. The very ambience promotes camaraderie. Many member clubs, or combination of clubs put up stalls to exhibit their projects and hosts are too willing to share how each such project was implemented. It is a golden opportunity for visiting Rotarians to learn from these clubs about how they chose and implemented their projects. It is also an opportunity to develop partnership with clubs in overseas countries to develop Matching Grant Projects. Alongside various stalls put up by Rotary Clubs, there is a separate segment for entertainment at various times. RI being an international association of various Rotary Clubs across the globe, music, dance, and other entertainment are on show on the cultural stage depicting cultures of different countries. There are also plenty of shops selling fashionable jewellery, dress, Rotary pins and banners etc. In some conventions, it is this House of Friendship that also houses food joints. The ambience, the people who participate and the This page sponsored by Rtn. Jothish .R

events that take place at the RI Conventions all attract you to attend every convention. Having tasted RI Convention at New Orleans in 2011, Rtn. RadhaVittal and I automatically registered ourselves for RI Convention 2012 at Bangkok. This time we were joined by Radhas brother President Rtn. Prabakaran of Rotary Chennai Presidency and his fellow Rotarians. On the night of 4th May 2012 as both of us reached the Bengaluru International Airport to board the flight to Bangkok, we found ourselves in the company of about 50 Rotarians of RI District 3190 assembled at the airport to board the same flight. Our bonhomie started at that moment and continued at the convention as well. On the inaugural day, we queued up for registration at the counter and to collect convention materials. Apart from convention brochures, we received ribbons of various colors containing the honors that we have achieved as Rotarians President, Past President, Assistant Governor, District Governor, the number of conventions one has attended (we were proud to pick No.2) etc. Adorned with these ribbons we entered the plenary session for the inauguration of convention. As each country was called out, that countrys national flag was waved and installed at a separate place. The true achievement of RI should be seen at this time when all Rotarians stood up paying their respect to the flag of each country. Writing as I do at this time, the feeling that I experienced was perhaps the same as any Indian participating athlete would have felt when Indias tricolor flag was hoisted at the recently concluded Olympic Games. As RI President Rtn. Kalyan Banerjee rose up to speak, the whole theatre rose up as one to greet the RI President. All of us from District 3190 were elated that a fellow Indian was speaking as RI President. Other speakers included Smt. Rajshree Birla from Aditya Birla Group, who spoke about Corporate Social Responsibility and the Joy of Giving, Mr. Shiv Khera, the motivational speaker from India and author of several self-help books spoke on remaining focused on accomplishing every

objective. Both the speeches were very inspiring. Another inspiring speech was that of the Deputy Director of Global Polio Eradication Initiative, World Health Organization. He appreciated the long battle carried on by Rotarians across the globe for eradication of Polio. In particular he appreciated the role played by Rotarians in India for this cause. He took great pride in announcing to the gathering that India has been declared polio free. To sum up he said: Success in India was the most remarkable milestone, deemed magnificent by the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Long considered one of the most challenging countries in which to eradicate polio, India accomplished what the IMB called the systematic enforcement of best practice to reach over 98% of children with polio vaccine. The country freed itself of endemic polio and finally laid to rest the question of whether polio eradication is technically feasible. There are no words to describe the ovation that followed this statement by the WHO representative. Alongside is a group photograph that we took at the Convention Centre in the proud company of Past District Governors, District Governor Elect and District Governor Nominee of RI District 3190. This photograph is the main souvenir that we brought back from Bangkok.

On 9th May 2012, we saw a huge crowd of Rotarians from RI Dist 3190 at the Bangkok Airport all returning to Bengaluru after a memorable RI Convention at Bangkok and hands full of gift items for family and friends at home. Right now Rtn. RadhaVittal and I are looking at convenient routes to reach Lisbon for the 2013 RI Convention. I request fellow Rotarians to join in large numbers for this Convention. When you attend one convention, you will get hooked for the follow-ons. Such is the inexplicable charm of RI and RI Convention. COME - BE WITH US AT LISBON, PORTUGAL 23-26 JUNE FOR RI CONVENTION 2013.

Rotary Bangalore Jeevanbimanagar The Mobile Revolution

Pramod Shrivastava, Alcatel-Lucent In last 25 years, world has seen new digital devices being introduced at a rapid pace, digital typewriters, faxes, TV, computers, telephones etc., the list is so large it is practically impossible to list them completely. This created a new digital age changing the lives of people, the way they work and play. Those who embraced the digital age prospered and those who could not were left behind, leading economists to coin a new social class of digital have and have-nots Around 15 years back another import invention hit the world, Internet. It fueled the digital age, computers started interworking so information and work could be shared from anywhere in the world, the geographies and locations dissolved, world as we knew changed and suddenly become flat, a big global village. This needed works and people to be connected anytime, and anywhere. This boomed the new pervasive and always connected age mobile communication and era of mobile devices. Increasingly, smart devices portable tools that connect to the internet have become a part of our lives. In the last quarter of 2010, sales of smart phones outpaced those of PCs for the first time, according to data from IDC. By 2014, more smart devices could be used to access the internet than traditional computers. The move to an increasingly mobile world will create new players and

new opportunities for a variety of industries. This is driving mobile systems to evolve newer ways to improve spectral efficiencies so that more users and better user experience can be provided to the consumers. The global mobile industry is the most vibrant and the fastest growing industry now. In 2012, the mobile industry will exceed $1.5 Trillion in revenues exceed 1.0 Billion of device sales, The mobile ecosystem has become much more dynamic, lightning fast paced, and breathtakingly unpredictable. 4G mobile networks which will provide better and faster connectivity fueling a new generation of application hitherto found impossible to run of mobile devices, augmented reality, multiplayer gaming and immersive entertainment and ofcourse new work culture will become routine. Let us peep into the next five years to see what will be the mobile landscape. There will be more device to device communication than human to human. Devices will assist in improving the quality of life and adding another dimension to the mobile age let us call it the age of smart device age. Almost everything of substance will have connectivity, cars will autonomously drive you from place to place, keep the gas tank filled and go to service stations for repair and maintenance. Refrigerators will order and food items when they need to be replenished. Microwave will coordinate with your car to keep the food hot when you reach home. Children will have their lessons dynamically defined to keep pace with their learning pace and aptitude.

Rotary Bangalore Jeevanbimanagar ROTARY- Through Indian Philosophy

By Rtn. G Boolchand Man getting a human birth amongst all living beings is a rare privilege. The Creator is considered to be nonpartisan, fair, just and impartial. The whole Universe observes the Natural Law of Order. In the case of man he deviates from norms, ethics etc. and hence there is inequality, iniquity and injustice. Doing good things and leading an ethical life would bring in happiness. Service to humanity, in that sense, would be beneficial and a practical way of leading peaceful life. Service Organisations: Service organisations provide great opportunities for individuals to engage in service activities for mankind. The service can be to individuals who are suffering due to poverty, ill-health, mental depression and various other causes who need financial and psychological support. The service could extent to the neighbourhood, community, group, religion and nation. The services can also be to animals for prevention from cruelty, to protect the environment from pollution, for conservation of ecology, stopping over-exploitation of nature and its endowments, respect for nature etc. The services can also be for promoting culture, social relationship and harmony in society, inter-religious harmony as well as international understanding. All over the world, people join various social service organisations and other NGOs, which have noble mission, with multiple goals and objectives, which benefit individuals and their families, community and Nation, mankind and Planet earth. These organisations bring people together on a common platform, transcending the differences in ideology, profession, religion, language, ethnicity and several such barriers which divide people. These organisations bring together nationals from different parts of the world, and thus fostering international understanding and peace. The ultimate aim being to unite mankind under one banner, composed of humanism, brotherhood, peace and harmony. The noble ideas of service organisations are by themselves sufficient justification to work in the service of the community. After all, we are all connected in some form or other and are mutually dependent directly or indirectly. Every entity in the world is connected to other entities. While some linkages are strong as in the case of the family or an organisation, in the case of others, it is weak and less obvious. In our society, gratitude has a high ethical value. We are expected to contribute, whatever we can to the community as repaying in return to all the entities for what we have received from them directly or indirectly.

Souvenir 2012-13

Community service is one way by which we express our gratitude for those known or unknown persons who have made and still making our life happy. One way by which we can materially and emotionally express our gratitude to them is to get engaged in dedicated social service to the community. People should thank the service organisation movement for getting them an organisation, platform and opportunity for this. Happiness lies in giving and sharing. Community service thus gives us an opportunity to climb the humanistic ladder, end point of which is experiencing divinity and happiness. The whole world consists of duality- light and darkness, good and bad, rich and poor, truth and lie etc. Sociopolitical systems have not yet found a solution to bring in equity and equality. Destiny and environment make some people rich, while others remain poor. The less fortunate ones need help and support from the more fortunate few. In a market economy society, there is always an element of exploitation of nature, animals and mankind in transactions and relationships. What one can do to reduce such exploitations to the very minimum. Service organisations give an opportunity to compensate for such selfishness by giving to the needy what we can afford which can be money or service to those who are less fortunate. Rotary in Service: Rotary is the worlds largest service network. Rotary members are business, professional and community leaders, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards and help build good will and peace in the world. Rotary clubs participate in broad range of humanitarian, intercultural and educational activities designed to improve human conditions. Rotary clubs are non-religious, non-political and open to every race, culture and creed. Rotary with more than 1.2 million members worldwide brings together man of all races, religion and political beliefs towards the common purpose of Service. Rotary motto, Service above Self exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organisation. When one comes to Rotary meetings, there is an atmosphere of goodwill and bonhomie. Everybody is in a joyous mood, exchanging pleasantries. Rotarians meet people of different ideas and ideologies, attitudes and behaviour, interests and motivations. Rotary meetings and service give an ambience of egoless-ness, cooperation, camaraderie, service to others, adjusting to others etc. In meetings and collective community service, mind expands and enhances happiness, which is the real success in life. Rotary also help in self-development, in terms of increased competence and communication skills, This page sponsored by Rtn. Rajesh Sinha

genuine leadership qualities, earning public esteem and goodwill, holistic development of life during productive as well as during retirement, enlarged friendship ship circles who help personally and professionally, good thoughts and character- thereby bringing achievement of professional competence and success in business. Philosophy element: From religion, spirituality, culture and philosophy aspects, Service organisation like ROTARY has special significance. All four religions which originated in India, namely- Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, believe in the Law of Karma, which signifies that our present life has been destined by the actions done earlier in this birth and previous births. Good deeds performed earlier would bring favourable results and evil deeds the opposite. The Karma concept has two parts- the fixed or irrevocable part and the other variable part, which can be modified by performing present, good actions. Thus, by doing good and noble deeds through Service organisations like Rotary, which is by leading a life of ethics besides compassion, patience, forgiving, friendliness, cheerfulness, selfless work etc., we can erase or alter the unfavourable variables of Karma to become favourable. Though other

religions like- Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity and Islam, do not postulate the Law of Karma- yet emphasise the need for leading life of ethics, service and sacrifice, prayer, charity and forgiveness etc. The religious part is equally important, which includes Prayer, surrender to the Almighty, acting in the name of God, detachment, with no rewards sought. Community service in Rotary help to grow spiritually, religiously, which in turn would earn the grace and blessings of the God as well as the community. Service has secular and spiritual dimensions, where we would benefit far more than what we put in by way of resources- time, effort and finance to help the beneficiaries of our service. Therefore, those who join Rotary with an element of differential interest would find that they would benefit more than the community. Every element of Rotary including the organisational discipline, fellowship and friendship, would enhance professional selfdevelopment and further hopefully help to get a better life in the next birth for those who believe in it. ROTARY is a noble mission where one enjoys life and spreads happiness to all entities, The time to be happy is NOW, the place to be happy is HERE, and the way to be happy is to make someone else happy and create a bit of HEAVEN right Here!

Why Brands Need to Embrace Social Commerce?

By Shekhar Verma Social commerce is a recent development and has suddenly caught the fancy of merchants and brands alike. Many online retailers are building storefronts on Facebook, and multiple reports all point towards the rise of ecommerce activity on online social platforms some going as far as to say that in future almost all ecommerce activity will be socially driven. So what is social commerce and why has it suddenly become so important for businesses? Social commerce is at the intersection of online social activity and online shopping. The rise of multiple social platforms in the past few years has led to an increasing role that interactions on these platforms are playing in influencing buying decisions both online and offline. Brands and merchants have woken up to the fact that in a way, your happiest customers can also be your best brand ambassadors. Both purchase intent and the actual purchase of products are being influenced by social referrals from our friends as well as strangers. In a way, this also mimics real life purchasing behavior. Think of how many times you have bought something on the recommendation of friends or family? Similarly, both discovery and purchase of products and services we buy online are being influenced by recommendations and reviews that we find online. There are some facts that point us to why this trend will become even more important in the future. Nearly 80% of active internet users frequent social networks. Not only are people spending more time on social networks, even the reach and adoption of social networks has seen explosive growth. Only today, Facebook announced that it has reached 1 billion monthly active users; that is nearly one in 7 human beings on the planet! This megatrend means that businesses need to engage with their consumers where they spend most of their time online. A recent report by Gartner Research points out that by 2015 companies will generate over half of their online sales through their social presence and Mobile applications. The increasing sophistication of social networks, the demographic and preference data they have access to, and the near real time measurement of user response also means that brands will eventually be able to offer completely customized offers based on an individuals profile, stated likes and other data captured from their This page sponsored by Rtn. Veenu Ravindran

online social interactions. As an example, there is a great possibility that an individual that has liked an infant food product brand will also likely be shopping for diapers. The intelligence derived from correlating such online social interactions to latent or impending purchasing needs can also bring about greater and more contextual cross selling opportunities. Brands therefore have a much better opportunity to curate offers on social, not just to increase immediate revenues but to also grow the community of brand loyalists. At a more aggregate level, brands engagement with their users on social platforms can also lead to newer product ideas, discovery of unfulfilled consumer needs, and a greater emotional connect leading to greater lifetime value of the customer. A lot of these benefits are especially true for small businesses and brands, which lack the marketing muscle of larger companies. Setting up a Facebook page for your business is a small but important first step in that direction! The author is co-founder of Indiplum (www.indiplum.com) . Indiplum is a social product curation and discovery platform, aggregating handpicked products across many categories from all Indian e-commerce merchants.

You Have A Powerhouse In You

Kiran Bedi From a speech to an interact club I accepted the invitation from a Rotary Club recently because it was to meet with an assembly of teenagers, school-going boys and girls. Also called Interactors as a part of Rotary Charter, its grooming programme seeks to instill leadership qualities amongst the youth. Here is what i told them to help them learn now, rather than later. For, every mistake we make in our lives has a cost. Awareness prevents or may reduce any resultant suffering. I started with a visualisation: feel your head and understand symbolically that in it is a power house comprising of several bulbs with attending switches. Each bulb when well-lit or switched on is knowledge. The brains expand with knowledge as it does by meditation, in proven research. There is no limit to our learning. Understand now certain eternal laws of nature. Recall when you were small. Did you not love those years when there was no homework, only toys, play and fun? Now there is lots of homework, exams and competition. If asked which time was better you would say when we were small. The fact is that a few years from now you will say this very school time was better than college. Later college was better than work. And so it goes on. Why am i making you conscious of these responses? So that you remember that nothing is permanent. Its all moving. Its all going. All you have is the present time. Therefore do all that you can now, to say later, I gave it all my best and got the best. Your school, your home, siblings, elders, your parents, teachers, school books and your support systems whatever is before you, are all going to change over a period. So value them. One day parents will have gone, family spread out, teachers retired, friends forgotten, health not as good as it is today, home changed, and so on. Therefore, understand that when nothing is permanent, all that is in your hands is to give your best to what is before you rather than regret that you didnt, later. Another law of nature which is infallible is that you will reap as you sow in the form of habits. These will form This page sponsored by Rtn. Shailesh Doshi

your character, naturally. You sow integrity, spirit of hard work, respect, gratitude, giving and discipline; these shall all come back to you as you grow up to be young adults. You will not need transformational leadership courses then. You will use trainings to enhance your personal and professional skills further and not have to do root repairs. Therefore ensure being good gardeners of your own orchard. Feed your saplings of habits daily with right nutrition. All these will flower and yield good fruit. They determine your responses. Finally grow up with a personal goal as well as higher purpose, which is the real meaning of life! Earn your wealth and comforts the ethical way and grow up to share alongside. Living only for yourself will not give you real happiness. This is what all research establishes. Why not make this habit a part of your life now as students when you learn to share with family and the needy whatever you can? It does not have to be big. Its all about being sensitive and conscientious, the hallmarks of a good, noble person. So light up your brain bulbs. Keep them charged daily, by switching them on through right nutrition, till they get solar charged even when you are asleep.

KNOW YOUR CITY: HISTORY OF BANGALORE

By Rtn. Dasaradha Ramaiah 1. 2. The small town Bangalore was called as PETE (old town) and British colonies called as Cantonment. It is said that during 1300 AD Rajaraja ,Cholas gave money to a village by name Bangalore Kalaga during 1060. This shows that Bangalore is a village older by 950 years from Gandharva period. One more migration is that during 1513 to 1569 one more migration taken place from a place called ENABUNJI in TAMIL SPEAKING areas around Bangalore (Pete) migrated to Bangalore and settled. This shows that Migration to Bangalore is not a new thing. Kempegowda - I called this town as Kalyananagara, Kempegowda - II 1537 - 1638 built a mud and brick fort under Vijayanagara empire. He built 4 towers in four directions One (1) at Ulsoor (2) Lalbagh (3) Ramanamaharshi Park (near Mekri circle) (4) Naharigudda near Gavi Gangaeeshwara temple as borders for the Bangalore Town.
