A journal like Gyan Sagar ,
had been a long time need felt by
students and teachers community of our
school. This is now fulfilled by RMSA (
Rastriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhijan).
Under RMSA programme our school
will publish monthly Journal Gyan Sagar from August-2012 . Thanks to the
RMSA authorities for their co-operation for the purpose.
The minds of the little ones when pricked and praised at the right time
will erupt like a volcano where from flows the wonderful literary work. Each
individual is an entity of immense potential and creativity which requires
proper exploration and channelization. This valuable publication will
provide us with that opportunity . Besides the chronological reports of the
activities , a journal should contain articles of advanced academic thoughts .
I hope all our teachers and students will participate in the process of
making this journal a powerful mouth piece of the school through their
creative writings full of knowledge base articles.
To give home access to all, an online copy of the journal will be
available for download at website www. gyansagar.in .

I feel immense pleasure to know that
Bongaigaon Railway H.S. School is bringing out its

Friendship Friendship Friendship Friendship
Sumit Ghosh
Class - XII

Friendship is the bonding of faith in ones life. Friendship is made by the
people to enjoy it forever in life. Friendship is precious and is a special gift of
God. People cannot live without friends. It is the best thing that a man gets in
life. However we may not find a faithful true friend. To find a true friend is really
a blessing of God. We can differentiate between a true one and a false one. A
true friend will always be with us, but a false one will only be for a little while A
true friend is one who makes his business for the well being of his friend. But a
false friend is one who makes his business for money of his friend. If we make a
friend then we should find the true one.

Beware of false friend ! You may be the next.

Science Fair Projects
Prasanta Nath
Asstt. Teacher

A science fair project is an investigation work done to solve a problem or
answer a question. It is a 'science' fair project because some scientific
method is used to do the work.. The 'fair' part takes place when everyone who
has done a project and gathers together to showcase their work. Usually
students take a poster to a science fair to explain the project.

Many a times some organizations arrange science exhibition where
students are asked to participate with a science model or project work report .
Science model refers to any working model or prototype of actual system
produced out of any scientific experiment that can be applied for human or
animal welfare.
A science model is made by applying the known principles of pure science
while a `science project work` refers to the investigatory work performed using
scientific method and analysis followed by conclusion drawn in the form of a report.

Scientific method :

The Scientific Method is a systematic and logical order of steps to follow and
organize thoughts about things and happenings around and the procedures followed
by confidently answer the questions under investigation.

Different steps involved in scientific methods can be summarized as

Observe the world around you.
Based on your observations, ask a question i.e define the problem.
State a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a statement that you can test using an
experiment.
Plan an experiment.
Perform the experiment and make observations and record data systematically
for easy analysis.
Analyze the data. This gives you the results of the experiment.
From the results, decide whether or not your hypothesis was true. This is how
you reach out the conclusions.
Depending on how your experiment turned out, you may have ideas for further
study or you may find that your hypothesis was not correct. You could propose
a new hypothesis to test.
Finally prepare a report of the successful project .
Also prepare some posters needed for presentation .

12
^ ^ ^ ^
Choosing a Project :
A pure science fair project can be chosen from natural science experiments on
the other hand a social science project from behavioural science like study of
behaviour of human or animal.
Following are some of the subjects of projects where students can perform
investigations.

Natural Science :
Study of actions which are (almost) impossible to do with your body .

Study of effectiveness of ash of banana peel in the removal of iron from water
used for washing purpose.

Investigation of purity of gold ornament without melting it.

Study of harmfulness of liquid mosquito repellants
Social Science :
Study of your own activities those proved to be the causes of your parents
anguish.
Study to see whether smiling is contagious ?

Study of ticklish students in a class and to see whether a ticklish student can
tickle himself or herself.

Phytoremediation - an emerging technology

Bidisha Sen Nath , Additional Teacher

Phytoremedian the word means, the use of plants to extract, sequester and
detorify pollutants. Phytoremediation is widely viewed as the ecologically responsible
alternative to the environmentally destructive physical remediation methods currently
practiced.

Plants have many endogenous genetic, biochemical and physiological
properties that make them ideal agents for soil and water remediation. Significant
progress has been made in recent years in developing genetically modified plants for
remediation of environmental contaminants. Several plant species such as water
lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) duckweed (Spirodela polyrrhiza), oxalis corniculata, Rumex
nepalensis, centella asiatica, Solanum nigrum have been studied to determine their
potential in accumulating environmental contaminants.

Type of phytoremediation -

1. Phytoextraction - The use of plants to remove pollutants (mostly metals) from
soil.
2. Phytofillration - The use of plant roots or seedlings to absorb or adsorb
pollutants (mostly metals) from water.
3. Phytostablization- The use of plants to reduce the bio availability of pollutants
in the environment.
4. Phytodegradation- The use of plants to degrade organic pollutants.

Advantages of Phytoremediation-

1. Applicable to a wide variety of inorganic and organic contaminants.
2. Reduces the amount of waste going to landfills.
3. Does not require expensive equipments or highly specialised personnel.
4. It can be applied in situ. Reduces soil disturbances and spread of
contaminants.
5. Environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing, socially accepted, low-tech
alternative.

Limitations

1 Contaminants may be transferred to another medium, the environment and the
food chain.
2. Climate and season dependent.

Metaphysical Poets : Especially John Donne

Amit Kr. Guha , Teacher

Feeling is more powerful
than to be seen..............

John Donne is the master of metaphysical poets. Others belong to the
Metaphysical poets are cowley, vaughan, Herbert, Marvell etc. These poets wrote the
poems with intellectual, analytical, psychological and bold. The main theme of their
poems are love, death and religion. Metaphysics means beyond of physics . We read
the poetry of Wordworth, Keats , Shelley etc. We feel Romantic and Nature, both are
highly expressed in their poetry. Wordsworths Lucy poem is love poem. If we read
JOHN DONNEs love poem The sun is seen rising is a saucy muscular poem. It
expresses a lovers vexation against sun - rising. The morning (The sun) is rebuked
as it comes to disturb the lovers. The poet asks a question - Why does it come to
peep through windows curtains of lovers bed room? He asks, cant he go to the
students bedroom or farmers?
Donne use conceits . A conceit is a pleasant a fetched idea, image and
comparison. he used conceit in one of his poem that two legs of a compass are
compared to two lovers. He nicely expressed that the relationship of his lovers cannot
separate, wherever they may go ......... as their bond of love is fixed as like as the
fixed of the two legs of a compass at the top, the legs may be extended..........
We find conceits in the Elizebethan poetry, Shekespeare and Sydney used
conceits also.
The Metaphysical poets used excessive conceits in their poetry. Shakespeare
and Sydney used conceits as ornaments and occasionally.
Donne expresses love item in his poetry for love sake. His love-poems are the
fittest to understand the significance of love. He is very much interested to express
the lovers mind..
His love is immortal. He logically proves in one of his poem that lovers never
die. Physically they may die. After death they will meet one day. He expresses that

15
^ ^ ^ ^
both of them will be buried and will be dust, the earth moves , they will mix one day
and they will be one soul . Really John Donne is uncommon. If we want to understand
the relationship of lovers we have to read more poems of the famous metaphysical
poets John Donne and others . Our world poet Rabindra Nath Tagore quoted a line in
his novel Shesher Kabita . We find also in Donnes poem The Canonization , the
line For Gods sake hold your tongue and let me love.

A few words on Teachers Effectiveness Training
Programme

Sakti Pada Chowdhury, Teacher

I was lucky because I got an opportunity to attend three days Teachers
Effectiveness Training Programme which was held at Don Bosco Institute in
Guwahati organized by RMSA (Rastriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhijan ) , Assam.
Kharghuli is the name of the place where Don Bosco Institute is located . It is
few kilometer away from Guwahati Railway Station . It is a very nice and ideal place
for training . The beauty of the place is soothing to the eyes . The environment is very
calm and quite. The mighty river Brahmaputra is flowing near the Don Bosco Institute
which increases the beauty of the place . The good behaviour of the students ,
teachers of Dos Bosco Institute and their well-discipline attracted me very much The
training programme was very interesting and fruitful for the teachers.
The session began with a game. The handout with statements were distributed
to the participants . They were asked to collect 15 signatures against each statement.
Each participant could take one signature from one person . They had to complete
the task within 5-7 minutes. Through this game , activity No. 1 , i.e. Getting to know
each other was completed.
In the training programme the methodologies of various activities such as
9 modules
Rescuing students from slow lerner trap

16
^ ^ ^ ^
Group efficiency project
Life skills
Multiple intelligence
Educating the slow learning children
were discussed by various resource persons with a view to transform the teachers
from good to great. From the training programme, it is clear that teachers are not
doing their jobs only for the sake of earning livelihood but they have a mission to
build the Nation. They have to be passionate towards the profession. Good teachers
are the key to any worthwhile educational reform. National prosperity is linked with
good educational System. A teacher must have a great deal of patience . In the
present process of learning, some students will learn fast and some will be left
behind but the teachers have to take extra care for that category of students as a part
of their mission. To succeed in any profession the first and foremost need is self
awareness . We must have answer to three questions.
Who am I ?
Why am I here ?
What is the purpose of my life ?
To know the answers of these questions we need to look within our self , We
need to really introspect . We should adapt the motto .
Each One Reach One and Teach One
After returning from Teachers Effectiveness Training programme , I also
organized a meeting in the Teachers Common Room of our school Bongaigaon
Rly. HS School on 04-08-2012 to share my experience and I discussed all the
activities which were done in the training programme. Each and every teacher took
part in the activities. In the meeting the the 9 modules were discussed and various
activities were done by the teachers .
For Example :
Module-1 : Getting to know each other, Objective and and outcome of the training
programme . Expectation Sharing.
Module -2 : Why am I a teacher ?

17
^ ^ ^ ^
Module -3 : Group Efficiency Project
Module-4 : What makes a teacher great ?
Module-5 : Motivating self and others.
Module-6 : Multiple intelligence.
Module-7 : Slow learners
Module-8 : Class Room Management and Teaching technique.
Module-9 : Training for youth on Life Skills.
The 10 core of Life skills were also discussed. The teachers of our school are
taking initiative to identify slow learners especially in subjects such as mathematics
Science and English. The teachers gave assurance to take extra care for slow
learners to their respective subjects.
Last of all , we , the teachers are optimists . we do hope Teachers
Effectiveness Training organized by RMSA, Assam , will be fruitful, no doubt.
