Overview of Hepworth Building Products

Hepworth Building Products is a global company, involved in the manufacture of above and below ground drainage systems. Through constant innovation, Hepworth provide solutions to the challenges faced by specifiers and installers of drainage and plumbing systems for today and in the future. Hepworth Building Products has three specialised divisions: Hepworth Drainage Hepworth Plumbing Products Hepworth Concrete Hepworth Plumbing Products manufacture the market leading Hep20 flexible plumbing system and underfloor heating, above ground plastics including soil, waste and rainwater systems along with Hep30 pressure pipe . Hepworth Concrete supplies pipe systems up to 2.4m diameter for main sewerage applications, including land drainage, jacking pipes and manhole sections and cover slabs. Further Information on Plumbing and Concrete products can be found via the Hepworth Building Products website www.hepworthbp.co.uk or see the contacts page at the back of the binder.

Product Innovations
In order to meet the changing regulations, and the challenges faced by the construction industry, Hepworth invest in research and development to constantly improve our products and design new innovations. Below are just a selection of the products we supply to meet these challenges:

SuperSeal
SuperSeal uses a unique manufacturing process to provide pipes that are straighter, lighter and stronger. The process uses less energy and materials, and is therefore kinder to the environment. The product is easier to handle and a flatter socket design, longer lengths and more uniform barrel make SuperSeal pipes easier to lay.

Stormwater Management
The management of stormwater is a key consideration when designing any construction project. In response to this Hepworth have introduced GEOlight, an ultra lightweight honeycombed structure which can be used in both soakaway and attenuation applications. See our stormwater management section for more details.

Introduction

Hepworth Drainage
Hepworth Drainage is one of the largest drainage manufacturers in the world. Founded almost 150 years ago, Hepworth Drainage has maintained a reputation for product quality, technical knowledge and support, and commitment to customer service. The Drainage division manufactures and supplies clay and plastics drainage systems for use in all areas of construction. The Drainage range also incorporates access systems, water treatment products and stormwater management systems which enable Hepworth to supply complete drainage solutions. As a manufacturer of both Clay and Plastics systems, Hepworth can advise on the most suitable product for your application, and can help with the specification and design of your scheme. We are committed to supplying drainage systems of the highest quality, which can be specified and installed with confidence, and to provide technical support to ensure that all your drainage systems are designed in the most efficient and cost effective way, and meet all the relevant legislation and regulations.

Threshold Drain
Threshold Drain was developed in line with Part M of the Building Regulations, which requires level access for the disabled. A level entry point can result in water ingress around the door area. Threshold Drain provides a solution to this, as its design provides a flushfitted unit that enables water to drain either to a soakaway or to be connected to a main drainage system. The product is suitable for new constructions or can be retro-fitted to existing buildings.

Reduced Access TPPIC

Guidelines from the Health and Safety Executive state that man-entry into confined spaces should be minimised wherever possible. In response to this Hepworth have designed the Telescopic Polypropylene Inspection Chamber (TPPIC) for use in non-adoptable applications. See our section on accessfor more details.

Introduction

Sustainable Construction
Introduction
Sustainable Development is high on the Government's agenda. In the construction industry we see the Government's influence through urban regeneration projects on previously developed land (Brownfield Sites), environmental assessments of products, whole life costing, and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) which improve the management of surface water and reduce flooding. The use of sustainable products and construction methods has been a major consideration for a number of years, but with the advent of aggregate levies, landfill tax and other government initiatives aimed to make the polluter pay, it has now become essential to minimise waste, use energy efficient products and take a long-term perspective when selecting building products and materials. BS EN IS0 14001 Hepworth is fully committed to sustainability and has become one of the first companies in its sector to be awarded the BS EN ISO 14001 environmental accreditation. Certified by the British Standards Institution, each of Hepworth's manufacturing plants in the UK has been awarded BS EN ISO 14001. BS EN ISO 14001 requires accredited companies to have a formal environmental policy signed by the head of the business and an environmental management system covering all aspects of operation. Systems range from those governing individual operators and relatively simple housekeeping procedures such as skip management through to control of emissions, emergency and recycling procedures. Compliance with all relevant regulations is integral to achieving the accreditation. To achieve the standard the company must also demonstrate the incorporation of continuous improvement procedures in order to retain certification. Environmental Policy Statement Hepworth Building Products aims to maintain its position as a

Introduction

Sustainable Construction
Hepworths Social Commitment In a broader context, companies must demonstrate a commitment to building sustainable communities and understand the impact their business has on society. We must minimise the impact our activities have on future generations and aim to provide a better quality of life. Hepworth is heavily involved with local communities. Initiatives include sponsorship and involvement with enterprise schemes at local schools, support of local sports clubs and societies, fund raising for a number of different charities, and at our manufacturing plant high up on the Pennines sponsorship of the local mountain rescue service.

Increasing the sustainability of your development

When specifying and installing a drainage system, greater sustainability can be achieved by considering the following areas: Use of Reduced, Recycled and Reused Bedding Hepworth Clay Drainage systems, including SuperSleve and SuperSeal, provide opportunities to increase sustainability and reduce installed cost. A number of opportunities exist to reduce the amount of primary aggregate required, use recycled aggregates, or use as-dug excavated materials from the site therefore reducing the amount of subsoil to be landscaped on site or transported away from the site. Recycled To reduce the environmental impact of the installation even further, recycled aggregate can be used with clay drainage. In addition to increasing the sustainability of the drainage system, cost savings can also be made when recycled aggregate is used.

The Sustainability of our products

An independent life cycle analysis was completed by Intron into the environmental impact of each pipe material in the market: Clay, Concrete and a number of Plastics. Overall it found that clay and concrete pipes were comparable in their environmental impact and overall they did less harm to the environment than plastics systems. Whole Life Costing Whole Life costs are beginning to have a greater influence on the choice of materials. Whole Life costing involves looking at the costs of installation and importantly, also the life expectancy and replacement cycles. Clay scores particularly well with a lifetime of a hundred years if installed correctly. In many cases systems are still performing well in excess of this.

Reused In some situations, depending on soil and ground conditions, material excavated from the site can be reused to backfill the drainage installation. This is the most sustainable and cost effective method of installing plot drainage, as the use of primary aggregate is minimised and the amount of material to be removed from the site can be reduced. As the environmental and cost benefits of reusing materials can be significant, technology has been developed to help select the appropriate grade of bedding material from their site. One method is to use a segregator bucket which can be attached to an excavator to separate different grades of material for reuse on site. More information can be found on our website.

Reduced By installing clay drainage the amount of primary aggregate required for bedding can, in most cases be reduced. This is because clay drainage pipes have a high inherent strength and will not deform under load. Therefore the amount of primary aggregate can be reduced in the vast majority of cases. In comparison, systems such as structured wall plastics derives the majority of its strength from its bedding construction. A full surround of natural or crushed rock aggregate is always required.

Introduction

Sustainable Construction
Conditions required for reduced/recycled and reused bedding
The following is a general guide to the ground and soil conditions where opportunities for reduced, recycled or reused bedding should be investigated. More detailed advice can be provided by our Technical Advisory Service. Brownfield Development Increasingly, developers are utilising previously developed land, sometimes referred to as Brownfield sites, for their construction projects. The Government is committed to urban renewal and the preservation of our Greenfield land is strongly backing this and aim for 60% of all new developments to be on this type of land. When designing a drainage system for a site being built on previously developed land several additional factors need to be carefully considered. Ground conditions can provide a number of challenges. These include construction waste buried in the soil, the presence of chemicals, unstable ground that may be subject to ground movement and varying conditions across the site. It is therefore important that the ground conditions are investigated before selecting the drainage material. Hepworth clay systems are particularly suitable for developments on previously developed land, providing a solution for most of the problems you may encounter. Our clay systems, have special purpose sealing rings for extra resistance to chemicals or hydro carbons. They will not be damaged in areas subject to ground movement due to the flexibility built into the joints. As a rigid system, clay is also less susceptible to damage from construction materials buried in the ground than flexible systems such as plastics. Advice is available from Hepworth on the most appropriate system for your site. Indicates suitability for using particular bedding types in general ground conditions for clay and plastics systems

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) In design of drainage system, planners will require an appraisal of the risk of flooding and the impact of newly covered areas on increasing the speed of run off to a man-made or natural water course. Where there is a potential for flooding, several alternative solutions are available.

These range from natural systems such as attenuation ponds, to soakaways and storm water attenuation tanks. Due to the importance of SUDS in todays developments we have added a new section to this update of the technical guide, which details the available options along with the solutions available from Hepworth.

System Performance
Materials:
Pipes and fittings are manufactured from Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U); Gullies from PVC-U, polypropylene (PP), or polyethylene (PE); Inspection chambers from polypropylene. Couplings can be made from either PVC-U or PP and contain a rubber sealing ring manufactured from styrene butadiene rubber (SBR).

Quality Assurance:
All Hepworth products are manufactured under a quality management system which is approved to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems Requirements.

Colour:
Pipes, Gullies and fittings are in terracotta. Inspection Chambers and elastomeric joint rings in black.

Maintenance:
A PlastiDrain system when correctly designed and installed should not need maintenance. However, blockages do occur from time to time and the pipeline will need to be cleared. Provision of access points into the system should be made in the design of the drainage layout. Should a blockage occur, flexible or roller type rods should be used. From July 1998 the new Europe-wide manufacturing standard BS EN 14011:1998 started to replace BS 4660. However, 110mm and 160mm access fittings are not covered by the new standard and will conform to BS 4660:2000.

Standards:
The PlastiDrain system is manufactured to the highest possible standards and where relevant is manufactured in accordance with BS 4660: 2000 and BS EN 1401-1: 1998 which specifies the requirements for underground pipes and fittings in sizes 110mm and160mm. Rubber seals are manufactured to BS EN 681: 1996. In addition the PlastiDrain system has been independently assessed by the British Board of Agrment and has been awarded an Agrment Certificate No 86/1648.

Recommended Bedding Requirements

The following notes are given as a broad indication of the main installation measures to be considered. Further advice and information can be obtained from Hepworth Technical Advisory Service on Tel: 0870 443 5551.
the load on the surface of the trench (eg. under a road, field or garden) the depth of pipe under the surface width of trench

Trench Preparation:
The trench should not be excavated too far in advance of pipe laying and should be backfilled as soon as possible. Trench widths should be as narrow as practicable but not less than the pipe OD plus 300mm to enable proper compaction of sidefill. Trench sides should be correctly supported. The type of bedding and filling needed depends on: the pipe type and size type of subsoil

These are recommendations made by Hepworth. Standard beddings are defined in BS 5955: Part 6: 1980 and BS EN1295.

Trench Backfilling:
Hand tamp the backfill fully at the sides of the pipe while tamping lightly over the crown. This should continue until a minimum thickness of 300mm has been placed over the pipe. As dug material may then be placed in 300mm layers and mechanically compacted. Dumpers and other vehicles should not be driven along the trench as a means of compaction.

Sitework and Installation Instructions

It is important that good care is taken on site to prevent unnecessary wastage of materials and time and for the prevention of problems after laying thus causing delay and additional expense.
Stack socketed pipes as diagram b. Ensure that the first layer is raised off

the ground.
Fittings supplied in bags should be stored away from direct sunlight. Incorrect way to stack pipes Correct way to stack plain ended pipes Stacking single socket pipes

1 Transport: Generally pipes are delivered pre-packed in standard quantities, held by

nylon straps and timber supports.

Loose pipes are hand loaded, care should be taken to clear the carrying

surface of debris and nails.

Pipes should not overhang the vehicle by more than 1m. Vehicles should

have side supports no more than 2m spacing.

With mixed loads of pipes ensure that the larger diameter pipes are at the

bottom.
Fittings are supplied in cardboard boxes or plastic bags. Incorrect way to load pipes Correct way to load pipes

4 Cutting:To cut a pipe to a specified length, use the following procedure. a) Mark the pipe, and cut cleanly at a right angle to the pipes horizontal axis using a fine tooth saw. b) The cut end should be chamfered to approx 15 for half the pipe wall thickness and deburred with a sharp tool.

5 Jointing:2 Handling: Pipes should never be thrown from lorries, dropped or dragged along the

Pipes and fittings are joined by push-fit joints. Socket ends are fitted with an elastomeric seal which is compressed by the spigot end of the joining pipe to form an effective seal. a) Ensure both pipe end and sealing ring are clean. b) Lubricate both pipe end and sealing ring. c) Align components and push home fully. If expansion is required the spigot may be withdrawn by 12mm. An allowance for expansion only needs to be made when using PVC-U couplings. This is not necessary with the use of polypropylene couplings. If extra leverage is required to push home the spigot, use a timber block at the trailing end to prevent damage. The push-fit joint allows for some angular deflection giving ease of installation whilst allowing for subsequent ground movement.

ground. Use web or rope slings when mechanically lifting pipes, do not use metal slings, hooks or chains. Take extra care in wintry conditions as cold weather reduces the impact strength of PVC-U.
Incorrect way to off load pipes Correct way to off load pipes

6 Testing:All lengths of drains and sewers installed correctly using the Plastidrain system will pass the appropriate air or water test. An air test is usually more convenient but an excessive drop in pressure may be due to a change in temperature, defective apparatus or failure in the pipeline. Should this occur a water test is recommended so that the leakage can be assessed and located.

3 Storage: Pipes should be laid on a flat surface free from large stones and projections.

If this is not possible pipes should be placed on transverse bearers with side supports. Stack pipes of different sizes separately, if this is not possible stack larger pipes at the base (see diagram a) Pipes should not be nested for long periods and stacks should not exceed seven layers or 2m in height.

Protection of pipes laid at very shallow depths

Pipes may be protected at shallow depths using a 150mm thick reinforced concrete surround, with allowance for flexibility at pipe joints using compressible boards which should be equal in size to the concrete cross section, or by means of reinforced bridging slabs of adequate strength.

HepSoil Solvent-Weld System

Introduction
The use of HepSoil Solvent-Weld joints enables on-site construction, or prefabrication, which may be undertaken on or off site. HepSoil Solvent-Weld soil is available in Black and Grey-Green. The system is lightweight, simple to install and maintenance free. rise i.e.: 1mm per 2m length for a temperature rise of 10C. Expansion within the system is allowed for by the use of push-fit fittings, created using the SW3 Expansion Cap. These should be placed at relevant points in the system, in accordance with BS EN 12056, Code of Practice for Sanitary Pipework. Part 1, gives comprehensive information on the chemical resistance of PVC-U and should be consulted in case of doubt. Additional information can be obtained from: Technical Support Hotline Tel: 0870 460 5578 Fax: 0870 460 5579

Effect of Solar Radiation

Prolonged exposure to sunlight will cause the colours to fade. It may also result in a slight loss of impact strength. It is not expected that this would affect the performance of the system. Protection may be gained by painting. Most exterior gloss paints are suitable for this purpose.

Maintenance
Designers should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. A comprehensive range of Access fittings are available within the HepSoil SolventWeld soil range (see page 7).

Composition and Manufacture

HepSoil Solvent-Weld Soil pipe is extruded in PVC-U. The corresponding HepSoil Solvent-Weld fittings are injection moulded in PVC-U.

Health & Safety

When making solvent-weld joints, it is essential to observe the normal safety rules for handling solvents i.e.: Never smoke or bring naked flames into the area of work Work in a well ventilated area to avoid inhalation of fumes Close the Solvent container after use and store in a cool area Do not allow solvent or cleaners to come into contact with the skin COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations should be referred to where applicable.

Effect of Frost
Frost does not affect the performance of PVC-U. However, impact strength is reduced at sub-zero temperatures. Care should be taken when installations are undertaken at these temperatures.

Flammability
Figure No. 1 SW3 Expansion Cap

PVC-U is self-extinguishing as defined by BS 2782: Method 508A.

Thermal Movement
The coefficient of linear expansion for PVC-U is 0.5 x 10-4/C temperature

PVC-U is resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. BS code of practice 312

Handling
Take care to avoid damage when handling pipe and fittings. Excessive scratching or scoring detracts from the appearance and can also affect the integrity of the joint.

solvent-weld. Failure to do this can result in joint failure Apply Solvent Cement S240/S241 evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe and socket Insert the pipe into the socket with a slight twisting action to the full socket depth Surplus solvent cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be firm enough to handle in 10 minutes and can be commissioned after 24 hours. Please observe the safety precautions detailed on each can of solvent cement.

Ensure that the components are properly aligned Push the pipe or spigot end of the fitting fully into the socket Mark the pipe or spigot end of the fitting at the socket face then withdraw it by a minimum of 12mm When the installation is complete, check that the expansion gap has not been lost The pipe run should be clipped adjacent to the expansion socket.

Storage
Pipe should be stored on a reasonably flat surface which is free from sharp projections. Ideally, pipe should be supported uniformly throughout its entire length. If this is not possible, place timber supports at least 75mm wide at 1 metre maximum centres beneath the pipe. Fittings supplied in plastic bags should be stored away from direct sunlight. If this is not possible, the bags should be opened to prevent a build-up of heat. Degreasing cleaners, silicone lubricant, solvent cement and fillers should be stored in a secure place away from any heat source and out of direct sunlight.

Support of Pipework
The table below shows the recommended maximum centres for support of pipework Horizontal Vertical 1.00m 2.00m

Fixing brackets should be fixed with No. 10 rust-proofed countersunk screws.

Figure No. 2 S240 Solvent Cement

HepSoil System Installation

Mark the position of brackets, drill and screw fix prior to erecting the stack. Start from the base of the stack and work up. Use SW7 Pipe Fixing Brackets in conjunction with SW6 Socket Fixing Brackets. On multi-storey installations, use S8 Rust Protected Metal Brackets on both the pipe and sockets (see Hepworth Price List for details).

Waste Pipe Connection

A range of Solvent-on Boss Adaptors allow connections of the waste pipe system to the stack. Boss Adaptors are available with either push-fit sockets or solvent-weld sockets: Push-Fit Boss Adaptors (S111, S112, S113) are compatible with push-fit (BS EN 1451) and solvent-weld (BS EN 1455) pipe Solvent-Weld Boss Adaptors (SW111, SW112, SW113) are compatible with solvent-weld pipe manufactured to BS EN 1455 Note: HepSoil S420/S421/S422 and S101/S102/S103 are not compatible with the new solvent-weld soil system. All Boss Adaptors feature a locating key which corresponds to a key-way on the fitting to ensure the requisite 21/2 fall is achieved.

Complete soil stacks can be prefabricated using the HepSoil Solvent-Weld system. This may be useful where identical designs are required for multiple projects.

Expansion
Expansion of the pipe work should be allowed for by incorporating expansion sockets at predetermined lengths in long pipe runs. The SW3 Expansion Cap allows solvent-weld sockets to be converted to ring seal, push-fit expansion joints. To make a push-fit expansion joint: Ensure that spigots or pipe cut on site have been chamfered and deburred Check for any deep scratches on the pipe or spigot which could prevent the ring-seal forming a watertight seal Check that the expansion cap is properly seated on the fitting Ensure that all parts of the spigot and socket are dry, clean and free of dust and grit Lubricate the pipe or spigot end of the fitting with Silicone Lubricant Grease S254 NOTE: Do not lubricate inside the socket. Do not use washing-up liquid as a lubricant.

Pipe Cutting
When cutting pipe on site, using a finetoothed hand saw: Cut the pipe cleanly at right angles to its axis Deburr the cut end with a scraper Chamfer the spigot end if this is to be inserted into ring-seal/push-fit joint, to avoid the sealing ring being displaced during insertion

Jointing
Note: There is a small gap between the OD of the pipe and the ID of the fitting. This is to allow sufficient solvent cement into the joint to make a good weld. Ensure the pipe is cut square before assembly with fittings Use Solvent Cleaning Fluid S243 on both surfaces to be joined. This removes all dirt and machine release agents and softens the surface ready for the chemical

Building and Installation

Installing Boss Socket Adaptors

To use Boss Adaptors with closed bosses on bossed pipes and branches: Drill out the centre of the required boss with a 50mm hole cutter Deburr and clean the area around the hole with Solvent Cleaning Fluid S243 Apply Solvent Cement S240/S241 evenly over both mating surfaces Fit the appropriate Boss Adaptor ensuring the locating key fits into the corresponding key-way on the fitting

W.C. Connection
A comprehensive range of pan connectors is available (see Hepworth Price List for details) enabling push-fit connection to horizontal outlet WC pans. Alternatively, the HepFlex Soil Flexible Pan Connector provides the perfect solution where non standard connection lengths and offsets are encountered.

However, these are not recommended for use where high temperature discharges are likely (e.g. from kitchen sink wastes).

Installing Strap Bosses

Mark the position on the stack where the boss is required Drill the stack with a 56mm hole cutter Deburr and clean the area around the hole, and the mating surface of the boss, with Solvent Cleaning Fluid S243 Apply Solvent Cement S240/S241 to the mating surface of the Strap Boss Fit the Strap Boss to the hole ensuring that the top is uppermost Secure the strap boss on the pipe by tightening the bolt Allow 24 hours before completing Boss Socket Adaptor connection

Shrink-on Connection
Fit a replacement soil ring (S360) onto the cast iron pipe spigot i.e. flat edge towards the pipe. Fit the blown socket of the shrink-on connector over the seal and apply gentle heat until the socket shrinks onto the cast iron pipe. This will compress the ring and form a watertight seal. The cast iron spigot should have a relatively smooth surface before making the joint.

Drain Connection
(a) Connections to Salt Glazed and Unjointed Clay The S4 (See Hepworth Price List for details) is used to connect to old clay underground drainage systems. Using a sand and cement compound, cement S4 into the clay collar ensuring that the top of the connector is above floor level to allow expansion of the pipework. (b) Connections to Cast Iron The S4A (See Hepworth Price List for details) is designed to connect to cast iron underground drainage systems. Use gaskin in the bottom third of the cast iron socket and complete the joint using an appropriate sealant.

Roof Weathering
The Multipitch Roof Weathering Slate (S195/S196) has been designed to provide an easy and effective seal between either 82.4mm or 110mm soil pipes. It is suitable for use on a variety of roof pitches from 10 to 55 and is capable of being utilised on the most severe roof-tile profiles.

Post Construction Connections

Post construction waste connections from basins, baths, bidets and showers can be introduced to soil discharge pipework using SW110 Strap Bosses.

Product Data
Description Hepworth Plumbing Waste Systems are manufactured in 32mm, 40mm and 50mm nominal sizes in polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and modified unplasticised PVC (MUPVC). A significant feature of the Hepworth System is the patented Push-Fit jointing method. An O ring seal is retained in a moulded housing by a snap-in end clip. This gives a simple, positive Push-Fit sealing action and incorporates an allowance for thermal movement of the pipework at each joint. This joint is also available in a Push-Fit Varix form. The Push-Fit Varix socket accepts Push-Fit Solvent-Weld pipework, metric and imperial copper pipe. Alternatively the solvent jointing method makes these systems particularly suited to prefabrication. Effect of Solar Radiation Polypropylene is affected by ultra-violet light and the painting of external pipework only is recommended. The performance of ABS and MUPVC waste systems is unaffected by solar radiation. The painting of external pipework, however, is recommended to give protection against the discolouring effects of strong sunlight. Effect of Frost Frost does not affect the operation of the systems; sub-zero temperatures, however, reduce the impact strength. Flammability Test method BS 2782 Method 508A.

Application To provide an efficient means of drainage of waste water, to either a gully or soil stack, from single or multi-storey buildings. Standards Hepworth Building Products Waste Systems, where applicable, conform to the standards laid down by BS 5254 and BS 5255 and are entitled to carry the Kitemark. Ring seals comply with BS 2494. Quality Assurance All products manufactured by Hepworth have to pass our stringent quality control procedures. A substantial majority also satisfy continuous assessment schemes operated by the British Standards Institution and are entitled to carry the Kitemark. Products which bear a British Standard number have been made in accordance with the appropriate specifications. Where no relevant British Standards exist products are manufactured to our own high standards. Composition and Manufacture Push-Fit Waste pipe is extruded in polypropylene, pipe fittings are injection moulded in polypropylene. O ring seals are moulded from specially formulated synthetic rubber. Solvent-Weld Waste pipe is extruded in ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), pipe fittings are injection moulded in ABS, or waste pipe is extruded in MUPVC, pipe fittings are injection moulded in MUPVC. Effect of Chemicals Polypropylene has a high chemical resistance and is unaffected by boiling water. It is resistant to most organic acids, alkalis and aqueous solutions though subject to attack by oxidising acids and concentrates. ABS is resistant to most organic acids, alkalis and aqueous solutions although subject to attack by some inorganic acids and concentrates. MUPVC is specifically formulated to be resistant to boiling water and is also resistant to the majority of inorganic acids and alkalis. MUPVC will not support combustion. For specialised applications, consult our Technical Support Hotline: Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407. Colour Push-Fit (32 and 40mm) and ABS Solvent-Weld available in white, grey, black and brown. Push-Fit 50mm available in grey only. MUPVC Solvent-Weld available in white and grey.

Maintenance Designers should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. It is advisable to paint pipes fixed externally for protection against the effects of strong sunlight. Traps Description Traps are manufactured in white polypropylene in 32mm and 40mm nominal sizes, for connection to 32mm and 40mm BSP standard waste outlets. The range includes tubular bottle, swivel neck, and anti-syphon types. Traps are supplied with washers to BS 2494. Trap Outlets A choice of either Push-Fit Varifix outlet or universal compression outlet is available. Both will accept Push-Fit or Solvent-Weld plastics pipe work to BS 5254 or BS 5255 and imperial or British metric copper. Varifix traps can be supplied with outlets for connection to 40mm ISO metric pipe. Performance The traps are manufactured to meet all the requirements of BS 3943 and carry the kitemark where applicable. All Hepworth traps have seals to the requirements of BS 2494. Barvac Trap Anti-syphon trap for automatic protection from syphonage problems associated with waste discharge systems. The trap is self-cleaning, has no moving parts and has a flow rate in excess of that required by BS 3943. Special design features give high flow rates and the bowl is removable for easy access and cleaning. 32mm: 50 litres/minute. 40mm: 67 litres/minute. Normal deep seal: 85mm. Minimum seal possible after syphonage (extreme conditions): 40mm.

Product Data
Description Hepworth Plumbing Soil and Ventilation Systems are manufactured in 82mm, 110mm and 160mm sizes in PVC-U (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride). The systems are available with either push-t or solvent-weld joints. Application To provide an efficient means of drainage of waste water and foul discharge from appliances in single and multi-storey buildings. Push-Fit Soil The Push-Fit joints allow for the expansion of pipes and incorporate a unique, patented purpose designed sealing method with double location lock. A sealing ring is contained in a moulded housing designed to prevent displacement either during installation or as a result of the action of expansion and contraction. Soil Socket Detail Patented clip Captive ring seal Expansion allowance 10mm for lengths up to 4m Ring seals are manufactured from SBR synthetic rubber to BS 2494. Thermal Movement Coefficient of linear expansion for PVC-U is 0.5 x 10 -4/C temperature rise ie: 1mm per 2m length for a temperature rise of 10C. Push-Fit Jointing An allowance is made for the expansion of pipes and ttings in each socket. Solvent-Weld Jointing Expansion is allowed for by the use of push-t ttings at relevant points in the system, in accordance with BS 5572, Code of Practice for Sanitary Pipework. Effect of Solar Radiation Prolonged exposure to sunlight will cause the colours to fade. It may also result in the slight loss of impact strength. It is not expected that this would affect the performance of the system. Protection may be gained by painting. Most exterior gloss paints are suitable for this purpose. Effect of Frost Frost does not affect the performance of PVC-U. However, impact strength is reduced at sub-zero temperatures. Care should be taken when installations are undertaken at these temperatures. Flammability PVC-U is self-extinguishing as dened by BS 2782: Method 508A. Chemical Resistance PVC-U is resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. BS code of practice 312 Part 1, gives comprehensive information on the chemical resistance of PVC-U and should be consulted in case of doubt. Additional information can be obtained from: Technical Support Hotline Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407. Maintenance Designers should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. Sitework
Jointing Push-Fit Systems Ensure the pipe is cut square and chamfered prior to assembly with fittings. Lubricate the pipe and fitting with Silicone Lubricant S254 and push-t to the full socket depth. Withdraw the pipe 5mm on the waste system and 10mm on the soil system to allow for expansion. Soil fittings with spigot ends should be inserted into the sockets to depth marks engraved on the spigot. This procedure automatically allows for expansion. Anchor fittings with a socket bracket to maintain expansion allowance. No expansion need be allowed for on the Push-Fit overflow system. Solvent-Weld Systems Ensure the pipe is cut square before assembly with fittings. Use Cleaning Fluid S243 on both surfaces to be joined. This removes all dirt and machine release agents and softens the surface ready for the chemical solvent-weld. Failure to do this can result in joint failure. Apply Solvent Cement S241/2 evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe and socket. Insert the pipe into the socket with a slight twisting action to the full socket depth. Surplus cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be firm enough to handle in 5 minutes. Please observe the safety precautions detailed on each can of solvent cement. Note: There is a small gap between the O.D. of the pipe and the I.D. of the fitting. This is to allow sufficient solvent cement into the joint to make a good weld. Expansion of the pipework should be allowed for by incorporating expansion couplings at predetermined lengths in long pipe runs. The pipe run should be clipped adjacent to the expansion couplings. No expansion need be allowed for on the Solvent-Weld overflow system. Traps When jointing traps to waste outlets, use the washer supplied, do not over tighten the nut (hand tight plus 1/8 turn). No other jointing compound or materials should be used. P traps can be converted to S pattern by means of BW50 and CW50 conversion bends. Traps are available with either Push-Fit or compression outlets as previously described. All traps are provided with a means of access where required. Support of pipework The table below shows the recommended maximum centres for support of pipework.

Metric W.C. Connection A range of horizontal outlet pan connectors is available for fixing to metric pans as specified in BS 5503. These are supplied with an integral sealing diaphragm which allows for up to 5 misalignment in any direction. Imperial W.C. Connection A range of pan connectors is available to meet the varying pan spigot outside diameters. These are Push-Fit connections, allowing easy removal in the event of the W.C. pan becoming defective at a later date. The polyflex pan connector is particularly adaptable because it allows for up to 5 misalignment in any direction. Shrink-on Connection Fit a replacement soil ring (S360/3 or S360) onto the cast iron pipe spigot i.e. flat edge towards the pipe. Fit the blown socket of the shrink-on connector over the seal and apply gentle heat until the socket shrinks onto the cast iron pipe. This will compress the ring and form a watertight seal. The cast iron spigot should have a relatively smooth surface before making the joint. Roof Weathering The Multipitch Roof Weathering Slate has been designed to provide an easy and effective seal between either 82.4mm or 110mm soil pipes. It is suitable for use on a variety of roof pitches from 10 to 55 and is capable of being utilised on the most severe roof-tile profiles.

Fix clips and brackets using rust-proofed countersunk screws. Use No. 8s on waste and overflow systems and No. 10s on soil system. Soil System Installation Mark the position of brackets, drill and screw fix prior to erecting the stack. Start from the base of the stack and work up. Use S5 or S7 pipe brackets in conjunction with S6 socket brackets. On multi-storey installations, use S8 rust protected metal brackets on both the pipe and sockets. Drain Connection (a) Connections to Salt Glazed and Unjointed Clay The S4 is used to connect to old clay underground drainage systems. Using a sand and cement compound, cement S4 into the clay collar ensuring that the top of the connector is above floor level to allow expansion of the pipework. (b) Connections to Cast Iron The S4A is designed to connect to cast iron underground drainage systems. Use gaskin in the bottom third of the cast iron socket and make the joint using cold caulking compound such as PC4.

Clickt Half-Round Rainwater - Clickt Square Rainwater Clickt High Capacity Rainwater - Ogee Rainwater

Product Data - Design - Sitework

Description Hepworth Plumbing Rainwater Systems are available in three profiles; Half Round, Square and High Capacity. The systems are manufactured from PVC-U, and incorporate synthetic rubber seals for maximum joint security. Clickfit Half Round Rainwater is a domestic rainwater system with nominal half round gutters of 112mm and 50mm and 68mm circular downpipes. Clickfit Square Rainwater is a more aesthetically appealing domestic profile with 112mm gutters and 65mm square downpipes. High Capacity Rainwater has been designed for large roofed domestic buildings and small commercial units where aesthetic appearance is important. High Capacity has approximately half-elliptical gutter 115mm nominal diameter by 75mm deep. It can be used with 68mm round or 65mm square downpipe. Ogee Rainwater is a decorative profile, with a high flow capacity. It is suitable for new build and refurbishment projects, where a more aesthetically appealing profile is required. It can be used with Square downpipe, or Round downpipe with an adaptor. Application To provide an efficient means of collection and drainage of rainwater from pitched roofs into the below ground drainage system. Standards Clickfit Half Round Rainwater is manufactured to BS 4576: Part 1: 1989 Specification for Unplasticised PVC Rainwater Goods and is kitemarked accordingly. There is no British Standard for Square Section Rainwater Systems. Hepworth Plumbing manufacture Clickfit Square Rainwater at a site certified to BS 5750 and ISO 9002. Colour Clickfit Half Round is available in grey, black, brown and white. Clickt Square Rainwater is available in black, brown and white. High Capacity Rainwater is available in grey, black and brown. Ogee Rainwater is available in black, brown and white. Maintenance Hepworth Plumbing Rainwater Systems are resistant to the effects of exposure to sunlight and to the corrosive atmospheres found in industrial and coastal areas. Low temperatures will not affect the performance of the system, but the systems resistance to impact loading will be reduced at sub-zero temperatures, and additional care in handling is recommended. The effects of expansion and contraction can result in gutter noise under certain conditions. This can be alleviated by the application of silicone lubricant to the gutter seals. Special Fabrications For particular installations that require special products a fabrication service is available. Information on this is available through the Technical Support Hotline: Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407. Recommended Gutter Size Requirements To specify the gutter size, two factors must be taken into consideration: 1. The effective maximum roof area to be drained. 2. The gutter flow capacity. Effective Roof Area The effective roof area can be calculated by using the following formula: effective roof B + C x length of roof = 2 area in m2 Gutter Flow Capacity Gutter flow capacity is dependent upon three factors: 1. System type. 2. Outlet position. 3. Whether gutter is laid level or to a specified fall. The information in Table No. 1 calculates the correct gutter flow capacity for a specified system profile, outlet position and fall. This information has been based on a rainfall intensity of 75mm per hour and recommendations from BS 6367: 1983. Recommended Gutter Support Spacings Gutter support brackets for Half Round and Square section systems should be fixed at maximum 1000mm centres in normal weather conditions. In abnormal weather conditions such as regular heavy snowfall, BS 6367: 1983 recommends the use of snow boards to avoid gutters becoming blocked or over-laden. As a precautionary measure against the weight of snow the maximum spacings should be reduced to 750mm. High Capacity brackets and fittings with integral screw mountings (i.e. union bracket and running outlet) can be fixed at maximum 1200mm centres in normal weather conditions or at 900mm centres as a precaution against the weight of snow. Jointing Clickfit Half Round and Square Rainwater

q Check gutter is correct length. q End must be in line with marks in fitting. q To take joint apart, apply pressure as shown to lever nib and gutter.

q Insert back of gutter fully under clip lip at back of fitting. q Pull gutter down slide until it clicks into position under front lever nib.

q Completed joint provides a slim streamlined profile which is strong and leakproof.

Fixing

q Use 1 inch No. 8 rust protected roundhead wood screws to fix brackets and outlets to fascia board. q Rise and fall brackets are used where there is no fascia board and as an alternative to rafter brackets.

q Rafter brackets are used where there is no fascia board and as an alternative to rise and fall brackets. q Top rafter brackets must be fixed before roof is tiled whereas side rafter brackets may be fixed after roof has been tiled.

q Downpipe should be supported by use of appropriate fixing bracket. q Square downpipe can be fixed completely flush with wall or standing off for future maintenance. Round downpipe stands clear of wall.

Expansion

Cutting

q All gutter fittings are pre-marked with gutter fixing marks to allow for recommended expansion. q Join subsequent downpipe lengths using pipe connectors leaving an expansion gap of 10mm at each joint. q Always connect downpipe to running outlet or offset spigot leaving 10mm gap for expansion.

q When gutter needs to be cut, use a fine-toothed hand saw and ensure that cut is clean and square and thoroughly deburred before gutter is fixed.

(4) Ground Floor Connection Direct to Drain (Fig. No. 5) Fixing The method of xing is dependant on the type of oor construction. In solid concrete oors, the gully can be installed within the oor itself (Fig. No. 1). In timber or concreted suspended oors, the gully body may require additional support by strapping or boxing in. In solid oors, the clamp base can be solvent welded directly to the gully body. In suspended oors an intermediate length of 110mm soil or PlastiDrain pipe will position the outlet clear of joists or beams (Fig. No. 2). When the gully is in position in the oor, the vinyl oor covering can be laid over the gully. Care should be taken to record the position of the gully prior to the vinyl oor covering being laid. The vinyl oor covering is cut and trimmed to the line indicated on the clamp base. The ooring is glued into the clamp base, taking care that there is no glue below the line. The self locating clamp is positioned in the clamp base, and xed with the self tapping screws supplied. Care should be taken to ensure that the screws at opposite sides of the clamp are tightened together so that unequal pressure is not placed upon the clamp base. Care should also be taken not to over tighten the screws. When the vinyl ooring is xed tightly in the clamp, the self locating grid can be tted using the twist lock action. To clean or rod the gully, remove the gully grid and take out the funnel and O-ring. When replacing the funnel, ensure that the O-ring is tted correctly.

Hygienic Self Sealing Waste Valve

Prevents the escape of foul sewer air from waste discharge systems. Actively maintaining a pressure equilibrium in soil and waste installations. is a self sealing valve designed to close the waste connection below a sanitary appliance to prevent the escape of foul sewer air into the dwelling and thereby complies with the requirements of BS 5572: 1994 Code of practice for Sanitary pipework and Document H of the Building Regulations 1985 Drainage and Waste Disposal. Where there is a waste branch which enters the stack above the WC branch, will provide an air inlet and no air admittance valve is required. Note: Care should be taken to ensure that the underground drainage system is not completely sealed. Natural open ventilation is required at the head of each main drain run and/or at every tenth dwelling. Extensive testing has shown that the valve performs under everyday conditions in which traditional water sealed traps are prone to failure. The valve will perform under back pressures which are 10 times greater than those experienced in a typical soil and waste system.

functions without the use of water, and complies with all other relevant functional requirements of BS 3943: Specication for plastics waste traps. is certied by WIMLAS; certicate number 042/97, to be a satisfactory means of excluding foul air from a building within a single stack drainage system. Jointing
Connection of HepFlex Waste ttings and HepFlex exible waste pipe 1 Check you have the correct HepFlex Waste ttings for the type of waste system you are connecting to FBW6 or FCW6 for push t waste to BS 5254 and FSBW6 or FSCW6 for solvent weld waste to BS 5255. 2 Cut the HepFlex Waste pipe square using the recommended cutters (HD77). 3 Ensure the inner surface of the HepFlex Waste pipe and the tapered spigot of the HepFlex Waste ttings are clean and dry. 4 Apply solvent cement (S242) evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe and tapered spigot. Insert the tapered spigot into the pipe with a slight twisting action to the full spigot depth. 5 Surplus cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be rm enough to handle within 5 minutes. Please observe the safety precautions detailed on each can of solvent cement. Note: There is a small gap between the I.D. of the pipe and the O.D. of the tapered spigot. This is to allow sufcient solvent cement into the joint to make a good weld. Push Fit Systems to BS 5254 Perform steps 1 to 5 as detailed overleaf using either FBW6 for 32mm waste or FCW6 for 40mm waste. If a prefabricated HepFlex Waste unit is being used then ensure you have the correct unit for the type of waste system you are connecting to (FBW30 or FCW30 for push t waste) and proceed with step 6.

6 Lubricate the HepFlex parallel (not tapered) spigot and the socket of the push t waste tting with Silicon Lubricant (S254) and push t to the full socket depth. Withdraw the pipe 5mm on the waste system to allow for expansion. Solvent Weld Systems to BS 5255 Perform steps 1 to 5 as detailed overleaf using either FSBW6 for 32mm waste or FSCW6 for 40mm waste. If a prefabricated HepFlex Waste unit is being used then ensure you have the correct unit for the type of waste system you are connecting to (FSBW30 or FSCW30 for solvent weld waste) and proceed with step 7. 7 Use cleaning uid (S243) on the HepFlex parallel (not tapered) spigot and the inner surface of the solvent weld tting. 8 Apply solvent cement (S242) evenly over mating surfaces of both the spigot and socket and insert the spigot into the socket with a twisting action to the full socket depth. 9 Surplus cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be rm enough to handle within 5 minutes. Please observe the safety precautions detailed on each can of solvent cement. Connection to or Water Seal Traps hygienic self sealing waste valves and most water seal traps will accept both push t waste to BS 5254 and solvent weld waste to BS 5255 and so will accept HepFlex Waste ttings. Bend Lengths It is recommended that HepFlex Waste pipe is not bent tighter than four times diameter.

22

HepFlex Waste - Sitework - continued

Factory made lengths in 32mm are 315mm long which is sufcient for a 90 bend or a 75mm offset. The 40mm assembled lengths are 365mm long which is also sufcient for a 90 bend and a 100mm offset. All lengths of HepFlex Waste should be clipped or suitably supported to ensure compliance with the Building Regulations. Pipe clips BW17 (32mm) or CW17 (40mm) can be used. Lengths fitted horizontally should be fully supported. Horizontal lengths greater than 200mm should be supported every 150mm for a minimum distance of 15mm. When connecting HepFlex Waste to short lengths of rigid pipe, the rigid pipe needs to be supported using a minimum of 2 clips. The location of the clips should be not more than 100mm from the ends of the rigid pipe to accommodate ttings and positional adjustment. For longer runs, the rigid pipe should be clipped in the conventional manner as follows: Horizontal installation 0.75m centres Vertical installation 1.5m centres

Air Admittance Valve

Hepworth Plumbing Air Admittance valves are recommended for use in above ground drainage systems installed in domestic and non-domestic buildings in accordance with BS 5572: 1994. 1. The valves provide a means of ventilation to the drainage system to prevent the loss of water seals in traps and consequent release of foul air into the building. 2. The valves are for internal use only, and should preferably be installed in a non-habitable space, such as a duct or roof where it is easily accessible but not subject to interference. The insulating polystyrene cover should be left in place when there is a possibility of condensation forming within the valve. 3. The S204 valves are for use on soil stacks serving buildings up to ve storeys high. The S204 can be connected directly to 110mm pipe by pushing the pipe over the rubber seal. For connection to 82mm pipe the pipe should be pushed into the rubber seal. 4. The S204/2 valves are for use on soil stacks serving buildings up to three storeys high. The S204/2 is also suitable for connection to waste pipes to prevent water loss from the trap seals by self and induced syphonage arising from water ow in small diameter branch discharge pipes. The S204/2 can be connected directly to 110mm pipe by pushing the pipe over the rubber seal. For connection to 82mm pipe, the pipe should be pushed into the rubber seal. For connection to 50mm pipe, the 110/82mm adaptor should be discarded, and the valve connected directly to the pipe using the 50mm compression outlet.

Benets q Easy installation of pipes above oor level. q Simple Push-Fit connections for all waste pipes. q No additional bosses or solvent jointing. q Waste connectors can be horizontal using swivel elbows or vertical as required. q Complete with universal seals, blanking plugs, integral pipe stops and manifold template. q Any combination of 32mm, 40mm and 50mm inlets supplied. q Self cleansing with wash down action. q Protection from induced syphonage on connecting runs. q No need for oor channels or pipe runs in cavity oors. q Allows design freedom to eliminate unsightly runs of waste pipe on external walls. q Can be used as a gully when tted at foot of external stack. q Complies with current Codes of Practice. q Carries agrment certicate no. 86/1733.

Plastic Drainage

Plastic Coil Land Drain

The Hepworth Plastic Coil Land Drain system consists of a corrugated pipe supplied in a variety of convenient coil lengths together with a range of couplings and multi-branch junctions. The pipe is perforated along its length to allow maximum water ingress combined with minimum siltation. Hepworth Land drainage in black polypropylene is manufactured in accordance to BS 4962: 1989: Plastic pipes and fittings for use as subsoil field drains. For Design considerations, see Section 9. For Sitework instructions, see Section 11, page 16.

Benefits and features

Economical to purchase, install and maintain Minimum disruption to surfaces and normal land usage Compatible with most trenchless laying equipment Designed to allow maximum water ingress combined with minimum siltation Easy lightweight handling

Other land drainage systems

Hepworth offers a unique range of products designed to overcome land drainage problems where high water tables, soils with poor drainage characteristics or flooding are encountered. This binder includes three other systems that are suitable for sub-soil drainage: The technically advanced HepLine system (see Section 2, page 38) Traditional clay land drainage tiles (see Section 2, page 40) Slotted PlastiDrain (see page 2 in this Section) Across the range products are available in sizes from 75mm to 450mm diameter, providing specifiers, developers and contractors with solutions for every situation.
