Product Innovations
In order to meet the changing regulations, and the challenges faced by the construction industry, Hepworth invest in research and development to constantly improve our products and design new innovations. Below are just a selection of the products we supply to meet these challenges:
SuperSeal
SuperSeal uses a unique manufacturing process to provide pipes that are straighter, lighter and stronger. The process uses less energy and materials, and is therefore kinder to the environment. The product is easier to handle and a flatter socket design, longer lengths and more uniform barrel make SuperSeal pipes easier to lay.
Stormwater Management
The management of stormwater is a key consideration when designing any construction project. In response to this Hepworth have introduced GEOlight, an ultra lightweight honeycombed structure which can be used in both soakaway and attenuation applications. See our stormwater management section for more details.

Introduction
Hepworth Drainage
Hepworth Drainage is one of the largest drainage manufacturers in the world. Founded almost 150 years ago, Hepworth Drainage has maintained a reputation for product quality, technical knowledge and support, and commitment to customer service. The Drainage division manufactures and supplies clay and plastics drainage systems for use in all areas of construction. The Drainage range also incorporates access systems, water treatment products and stormwater management systems which enable Hepworth to supply complete drainage solutions. As a manufacturer of both Clay and Plastics systems, Hepworth can advise on the most suitable product for your application, and can help with the specification and design of your scheme. We are committed to supplying drainage systems of the highest quality, which can be specified and installed with confidence, and to provide technical support to ensure that all your drainage systems are designed in the most efficient and cost effective way, and meet all the relevant legislation and regulations.
Threshold Drain
Threshold Drain was developed in line with Part M of the Building Regulations, which requires level access for the disabled. A level entry point can result in water ingress around the door area. Threshold Drain provides a solution to this, as its design provides a flushfitted unit that enables water to drain either to a soakaway or to be connected to a main drainage system. The product is suitable for new constructions or can be retro-fitted to existing buildings.

Sustainable Construction
Introduction
Sustainable Development is high on the Government's agenda. In the construction industry we see the Government's influence through urban regeneration projects on previously developed land (Brownfield Sites), environmental assessments of products, whole life costing, and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) which improve the management of surface water and reduce flooding. The use of sustainable products and construction methods has been a major consideration for a number of years, but with the advent of aggregate levies, landfill tax and other government initiatives aimed to make the polluter pay, it has now become essential to minimise waste, use energy efficient products and take a long-term perspective when selecting building products and materials. BS EN IS0 14001 Hepworth is fully committed to sustainability and has become one of the first companies in its sector to be awarded the BS EN ISO 14001 environmental accreditation. Certified by the British Standards Institution, each of Hepworth's manufacturing plants in the UK has been awarded BS EN ISO 14001. BS EN ISO 14001 requires accredited companies to have a formal environmental policy signed by the head of the business and an environmental management system covering all aspects of operation. Systems range from those governing individual operators and relatively simple housekeeping procedures such as skip management through to control of emissions, emergency and recycling procedures. Compliance with all relevant regulations is integral to achieving the accreditation. To achieve the standard the company must also demonstrate the incorporation of continuous improvement procedures in order to retain certification. Environmental Policy Statement Hepworth Building Products aims to maintain its position as a
leading manufacturer of building products. Our objective is to provide our customers with the right product, at the right time, and at a competitive price. We are committed not only to compliance with

Back to Nature Quarrying A quarrying operation is required to provide clay for the manufacture of our products. This obviously has an impact on the environment. However, after excavation has been completed our return to nature policy ensures that the quarry is returned to its previous condition or better. Our quarries are located close to the manufacturing site, minimising the transport required,

Introduction
Sustainable Construction
Hepworths Social Commitment In a broader context, companies must demonstrate a commitment to building sustainable communities and understand the impact their business has on society. We must minimise the impact our activities have on future generations and aim to provide a better quality of life. Hepworth is heavily involved with local communities. Initiatives include sponsorship and involvement with enterprise schemes at local schools, support of local sports clubs and societies, fund raising for a number of different charities, and at our manufacturing plant high up on the Pennines sponsorship of the local mountain rescue service.
Reused In some situations, depending on soil and ground conditions, material excavated from the site can be reused to backfill the drainage installation. This is the most sustainable and cost effective method of installing plot drainage, as the use of primary aggregate is minimised and the amount of material to be removed from the site can be reduced. As the environmental and cost benefits of reusing materials can be significant, technology has been developed to help select the appropriate grade of bedding material from their site. One method is to use a segregator bucket which can be attached to an excavator to separate different grades of material for reuse on site. More information can be found on our website.
Reduced By installing clay drainage the amount of primary aggregate required for bedding can, in most cases be reduced. This is because clay drainage pipes have a high inherent strength and will not deform under load. Therefore the amount of primary aggregate can be reduced in the vast majority of cases. In comparison, systems such as structured wall plastics derives the majority of its strength from its bedding construction. A full surround of natural or crushed rock aggregate is always required.

Introduction
Sustainable Construction
Conditions required for reduced/recycled and reused bedding
The following is a general guide to the ground and soil conditions where opportunities for reduced, recycled or reused bedding should be investigated. More detailed advice can be provided by our Technical Advisory Service. Brownfield Development Increasingly, developers are utilising previously developed land, sometimes referred to as Brownfield sites, for their construction projects. The Government is committed to urban renewal and the preservation of our Greenfield land is strongly backing this and aim for 60% of all new developments to be on this type of land. When designing a drainage system for a site being built on previously developed land several additional factors need to be carefully considered. Ground conditions can provide a number of challenges. These include construction waste buried in the soil, the presence of chemicals, unstable ground that may be subject to ground movement and varying conditions across the site. It is therefore important that the ground conditions are investigated before selecting the drainage material. Hepworth clay systems are particularly suitable for developments on previously developed land, providing a solution for most of the problems you may encounter. Our clay systems, have special purpose sealing rings for extra resistance to chemicals or hydro carbons. They will not be damaged in areas subject to ground movement due to the flexibility built into the joints. As a rigid system, clay is also less susceptible to damage from construction materials buried in the ground than flexible systems such as plastics. Advice is available from Hepworth on the most appropriate system for your site. Indicates suitability for using particular bedding types in general ground conditions for clay and plastics systems

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) In design of drainage system, planners will require an appraisal of the risk of flooding and the impact of newly covered areas on increasing the speed of run off to a man-made or natural water course. Where there is a potential for flooding, several alternative solutions are available.
These range from natural systems such as attenuation ponds, to soakaways and storm water attenuation tanks. Due to the importance of SUDS in todays developments we have added a new section to this update of the technical guide, which details the available options along with the solutions available from Hepworth.

System Performance
Materials:
Pipes and fittings are manufactured from Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U); Gullies from PVC-U, polypropylene (PP), or polyethylene (PE); Inspection chambers from polypropylene. Couplings can be made from either PVC-U or PP and contain a rubber sealing ring manufactured from styrene butadiene rubber (SBR).
Quality Assurance:
All Hepworth products are manufactured under a quality management system which is approved to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems Requirements.
Colour:
Pipes, Gullies and fittings are in terracotta. Inspection Chambers and elastomeric joint rings in black.
Maintenance:
A PlastiDrain system when correctly designed and installed should not need maintenance. However, blockages do occur from time to time and the pipeline will need to be cleared. Provision of access points into the system should be made in the design of the drainage layout. Should a blockage occur, flexible or roller type rods should be used. From July 1998 the new Europe-wide manufacturing standard BS EN 14011:1998 started to replace BS 4660. However, 110mm and 160mm access fittings are not covered by the new standard and will conform to BS 4660:2000.
Standards:
The PlastiDrain system is manufactured to the highest possible standards and where relevant is manufactured in accordance with BS 4660: 2000 and BS EN 1401-1: 1998 which specifies the requirements for underground pipes and fittings in sizes 110mm and160mm. Rubber seals are manufactured to BS EN 681: 1996. In addition the PlastiDrain system has been independently assessed by the British Board of Agrment and has been awarded an Agrment Certificate No 86/1648.
Trench Preparation:
The trench should not be excavated too far in advance of pipe laying and should be backfilled as soon as possible. Trench widths should be as narrow as practicable but not less than the pipe OD plus 300mm to enable proper compaction of sidefill. Trench sides should be correctly supported. The type of bedding and filling needed depends on: the pipe type and size type of subsoil
These are recommendations made by Hepworth. Standard beddings are defined in BS 5955: Part 6: 1980 and BS EN1295.
Trench Backfilling:
Hand tamp the backfill fully at the sides of the pipe while tamping lightly over the crown. This should continue until a minimum thickness of 300mm has been placed over the pipe. As dug material may then be placed in 300mm layers and mechanically compacted. Dumpers and other vehicles should not be driven along the trench as a means of compaction.
Pipes laid at depths greater than 900mm cover in roads, 600mm in fields.
Pipes laid in as dug subsoil suitable as bedding material* Pipes laid in subsoil unsuitable as bedding material which does not puddle when walked on. GL GL Pipes laid in subsoil unsuitable as bedding material.
Pipes laid at depths less than 900mm cover in roads, 600mm in fields.

4 Cutting:To cut a pipe to a specified length, use the following procedure. a) Mark the pipe, and cut cleanly at a right angle to the pipes horizontal axis using a fine tooth saw. b) The cut end should be chamfered to approx 15 for half the pipe wall thickness and deburred with a sharp tool.
5 Jointing:2 Handling: Pipes should never be thrown from lorries, dropped or dragged along the
Pipes and fittings are joined by push-fit joints. Socket ends are fitted with an elastomeric seal which is compressed by the spigot end of the joining pipe to form an effective seal. a) Ensure both pipe end and sealing ring are clean. b) Lubricate both pipe end and sealing ring. c) Align components and push home fully. If expansion is required the spigot may be withdrawn by 12mm. An allowance for expansion only needs to be made when using PVC-U couplings. This is not necessary with the use of polypropylene couplings. If extra leverage is required to push home the spigot, use a timber block at the trailing end to prevent damage. The push-fit joint allows for some angular deflection giving ease of installation whilst allowing for subsequent ground movement.
ground. Use web or rope slings when mechanically lifting pipes, do not use metal slings, hooks or chains. Take extra care in wintry conditions as cold weather reduces the impact strength of PVC-U.
Incorrect way to off load pipes Correct way to off load pipes
6 Testing:All lengths of drains and sewers installed correctly using the Plastidrain system will pass the appropriate air or water test. An air test is usually more convenient but an excessive drop in pressure may be due to a change in temperature, defective apparatus or failure in the pipeline. Should this occur a water test is recommended so that the leakage can be assessed and located.
3 Storage: Pipes should be laid on a flat surface free from large stones and projections.
If this is not possible pipes should be placed on transverse bearers with side supports. Stack pipes of different sizes separately, if this is not possible stack larger pipes at the base (see diagram a) Pipes should not be nested for long periods and stacks should not exceed seven layers or 2m in height.

Maintenance
Designers should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. A comprehensive range of Access fittings are available within the HepSoil SolventWeld soil range (see page 7).
Effect of Frost
Frost does not affect the performance of PVC-U. However, impact strength is reduced at sub-zero temperatures. Care should be taken when installations are undertaken at these temperatures.
Flammability
Figure No. 1 SW3 Expansion Cap
Thermal Movement
The coefficient of linear expansion for PVC-U is 0.5 x 10-4/C temperature
8
Chemical Resistance
PVC-U is resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. BS code of practice 312
Handling
Take care to avoid damage when handling pipe and fittings. Excessive scratching or scoring detracts from the appearance and can also affect the integrity of the joint.
solvent-weld. Failure to do this can result in joint failure Apply Solvent Cement S240/S241 evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe and socket Insert the pipe into the socket with a slight twisting action to the full socket depth Surplus solvent cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be firm enough to handle in 10 minutes and can be commissioned after 24 hours. Please observe the safety precautions detailed on each can of solvent cement.
Ensure that the components are properly aligned Push the pipe or spigot end of the fitting fully into the socket Mark the pipe or spigot end of the fitting at the socket face then withdraw it by a minimum of 12mm When the installation is complete, check that the expansion gap has not been lost The pipe run should be clipped adjacent to the expansion socket.
Storage
Pipe should be stored on a reasonably flat surface which is free from sharp projections. Ideally, pipe should be supported uniformly throughout its entire length. If this is not possible, place timber supports at least 75mm wide at 1 metre maximum centres beneath the pipe. Fittings supplied in plastic bags should be stored away from direct sunlight. If this is not possible, the bags should be opened to prevent a build-up of heat. Degreasing cleaners, silicone lubricant, solvent cement and fillers should be stored in a secure place away from any heat source and out of direct sunlight.
Support of Pipework
The table below shows the recommended maximum centres for support of pipework Horizontal Vertical 1.00m 2.00m
Complete soil stacks can be prefabricated using the HepSoil Solvent-Weld system. This may be useful where identical designs are required for multiple projects.
Expansion
Expansion of the pipe work should be allowed for by incorporating expansion sockets at predetermined lengths in long pipe runs. The SW3 Expansion Cap allows solvent-weld sockets to be converted to ring seal, push-fit expansion joints. To make a push-fit expansion joint: Ensure that spigots or pipe cut on site have been chamfered and deburred Check for any deep scratches on the pipe or spigot which could prevent the ring-seal forming a watertight seal Check that the expansion cap is properly seated on the fitting Ensure that all parts of the spigot and socket are dry, clean and free of dust and grit Lubricate the pipe or spigot end of the fitting with Silicone Lubricant Grease S254 NOTE: Do not lubricate inside the socket. Do not use washing-up liquid as a lubricant.
Pipe Cutting
When cutting pipe on site, using a finetoothed hand saw: Cut the pipe cleanly at right angles to its axis Deburr the cut end with a scraper Chamfer the spigot end if this is to be inserted into ring-seal/push-fit joint, to avoid the sealing ring being displaced during insertion
Jointing
Note: There is a small gap between the OD of the pipe and the ID of the fitting. This is to allow sufficient solvent cement into the joint to make a good weld. Ensure the pipe is cut square before assembly with fittings Use Solvent Cleaning Fluid S243 on both surfaces to be joined. This removes all dirt and machine release agents and softens the surface ready for the chemical
W.C. Connection
A comprehensive range of pan connectors is available (see Hepworth Price List for details) enabling push-fit connection to horizontal outlet WC pans. Alternatively, the HepFlex Soil Flexible Pan Connector provides the perfect solution where non standard connection lengths and offsets are encountered.
However, these are not recommended for use where high temperature discharges are likely (e.g. from kitchen sink wastes).
Shrink-on Connection
Fit a replacement soil ring (S360) onto the cast iron pipe spigot i.e. flat edge towards the pipe. Fit the blown socket of the shrink-on connector over the seal and apply gentle heat until the socket shrinks onto the cast iron pipe. This will compress the ring and form a watertight seal. The cast iron spigot should have a relatively smooth surface before making the joint.
Drain Connection
(a) Connections to Salt Glazed and Unjointed Clay The S4 (See Hepworth Price List for details) is used to connect to old clay underground drainage systems. Using a sand and cement compound, cement S4 into the clay collar ensuring that the top of the connector is above floor level to allow expansion of the pipework. (b) Connections to Cast Iron The S4A (See Hepworth Price List for details) is designed to connect to cast iron underground drainage systems. Use gaskin in the bottom third of the cast iron socket and complete the joint using an appropriate sealant.
Roof Weathering
The Multipitch Roof Weathering Slate (S195/S196) has been designed to provide an easy and effective seal between either 82.4mm or 110mm soil pipes. It is suitable for use on a variety of roof pitches from 10 to 55 and is capable of being utilised on the most severe roof-tile profiles.

Product Data
Description Hepworth Plumbing Waste Systems are manufactured in 32mm, 40mm and 50mm nominal sizes in polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and modified unplasticised PVC (MUPVC). A significant feature of the Hepworth System is the patented Push-Fit jointing method. An O ring seal is retained in a moulded housing by a snap-in end clip. This gives a simple, positive Push-Fit sealing action and incorporates an allowance for thermal movement of the pipework at each joint. This joint is also available in a Push-Fit Varix form. The Push-Fit Varix socket accepts Push-Fit Solvent-Weld pipework, metric and imperial copper pipe. Alternatively the solvent jointing method makes these systems particularly suited to prefabrication. Effect of Solar Radiation Polypropylene is affected by ultra-violet light and the painting of external pipework only is recommended. The performance of ABS and MUPVC waste systems is unaffected by solar radiation. The painting of external pipework, however, is recommended to give protection against the discolouring effects of strong sunlight. Effect of Frost Frost does not affect the operation of the systems; sub-zero temperatures, however, reduce the impact strength. Flammability Test method BS 2782 Method 508A.
Push-Fit (P/P) 1.0''/min (ABS) 1.3''/min Solvent-Weld (MUPVC) Self Extinguishing
Application To provide an efficient means of drainage of waste water, to either a gully or soil stack, from single or multi-storey buildings. Standards Hepworth Building Products Waste Systems, where applicable, conform to the standards laid down by BS 5254 and BS 5255 and are entitled to carry the Kitemark. Ring seals comply with BS 2494. Quality Assurance All products manufactured by Hepworth have to pass our stringent quality control procedures. A substantial majority also satisfy continuous assessment schemes operated by the British Standards Institution and are entitled to carry the Kitemark. Products which bear a British Standard number have been made in accordance with the appropriate specifications. Where no relevant British Standards exist products are manufactured to our own high standards. Composition and Manufacture Push-Fit Waste pipe is extruded in polypropylene, pipe fittings are injection moulded in polypropylene. O ring seals are moulded from specially formulated synthetic rubber. Solvent-Weld Waste pipe is extruded in ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), pipe fittings are injection moulded in ABS, or waste pipe is extruded in MUPVC, pipe fittings are injection moulded in MUPVC. Effect of Chemicals Polypropylene has a high chemical resistance and is unaffected by boiling water. It is resistant to most organic acids, alkalis and aqueous solutions though subject to attack by oxidising acids and concentrates. ABS is resistant to most organic acids, alkalis and aqueous solutions although subject to attack by some inorganic acids and concentrates. MUPVC is specifically formulated to be resistant to boiling water and is also resistant to the majority of inorganic acids and alkalis. MUPVC will not support combustion. For specialised applications, consult our Technical Support Hotline: Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407. Colour Push-Fit (32 and 40mm) and ABS Solvent-Weld available in white, grey, black and brown. Push-Fit 50mm available in grey only. MUPVC Solvent-Weld available in white and grey.
Maintenance Designers should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. It is advisable to paint pipes fixed externally for protection against the effects of strong sunlight. Traps Description Traps are manufactured in white polypropylene in 32mm and 40mm nominal sizes, for connection to 32mm and 40mm BSP standard waste outlets. The range includes tubular bottle, swivel neck, and anti-syphon types. Traps are supplied with washers to BS 2494. Trap Outlets A choice of either Push-Fit Varifix outlet or universal compression outlet is available. Both will accept Push-Fit or Solvent-Weld plastics pipe work to BS 5254 or BS 5255 and imperial or British metric copper. Varifix traps can be supplied with outlets for connection to 40mm ISO metric pipe. Performance The traps are manufactured to meet all the requirements of BS 3943 and carry the kitemark where applicable. All Hepworth traps have seals to the requirements of BS 2494. Barvac Trap Anti-syphon trap for automatic protection from syphonage problems associated with waste discharge systems. The trap is self-cleaning, has no moving parts and has a flow rate in excess of that required by BS 3943. Special design features give high flow rates and the bowl is removable for easy access and cleaning. 32mm: 50 litres/minute. 40mm: 67 litres/minute. Normal deep seal: 85mm. Minimum seal possible after syphonage (extreme conditions): 40mm.

Product Data
Description Hepworth Plumbing Soil and Ventilation Systems are manufactured in 82mm, 110mm and 160mm sizes in PVC-U (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride). The systems are available with either push-t or solvent-weld joints. Application To provide an efficient means of drainage of waste water and foul discharge from appliances in single and multi-storey buildings. Push-Fit Soil The Push-Fit joints allow for the expansion of pipes and incorporate a unique, patented purpose designed sealing method with double location lock. A sealing ring is contained in a moulded housing designed to prevent displacement either during installation or as a result of the action of expansion and contraction. Soil Socket Detail Patented clip Captive ring seal Expansion allowance 10mm for lengths up to 4m Ring seals are manufactured from SBR synthetic rubber to BS 2494. Thermal Movement Coefficient of linear expansion for PVC-U is 0.5 x 10 -4/C temperature rise ie: 1mm per 2m length for a temperature rise of 10C. Push-Fit Jointing An allowance is made for the expansion of pipes and ttings in each socket. Solvent-Weld Jointing Expansion is allowed for by the use of push-t ttings at relevant points in the system, in accordance with BS 5572, Code of Practice for Sanitary Pipework. Effect of Solar Radiation Prolonged exposure to sunlight will cause the colours to fade. It may also result in the slight loss of impact strength. It is not expected that this would affect the performance of the system. Protection may be gained by painting. Most exterior gloss paints are suitable for this purpose. Effect of Frost Frost does not affect the performance of PVC-U. However, impact strength is reduced at sub-zero temperatures. Care should be taken when installations are undertaken at these temperatures. Flammability PVC-U is self-extinguishing as dened by BS 2782: Method 508A. Chemical Resistance PVC-U is resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. BS code of practice 312 Part 1, gives comprehensive information on the chemical resistance of PVC-U and should be consulted in case of doubt. Additional information can be obtained from: Technical Support Hotline Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407. Maintenance Designers should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. Access pipes and bosses are available within both ranges. Adaptation to 40mm and 50mm ISO Metric OD Pipe All Hepworth nominal 40mm and 50mm bossed ttings and solvent boss adaptors can be supplied to accept 40mm or 50mm ISO metric waste pipes. Special Fabrications For particular installations that require special products, a fabrication service is available. Information on this service is available through the Technical Support Hotline Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407. Colours Push-Fit Soil

Sitework
Jointing Push-Fit Systems Ensure the pipe is cut square and chamfered prior to assembly with fittings. Lubricate the pipe and fitting with Silicone Lubricant S254 and push-t to the full socket depth. Withdraw the pipe 5mm on the waste system and 10mm on the soil system to allow for expansion. Soil fittings with spigot ends should be inserted into the sockets to depth marks engraved on the spigot. This procedure automatically allows for expansion. Anchor fittings with a socket bracket to maintain expansion allowance. No expansion need be allowed for on the Push-Fit overflow system. Solvent-Weld Systems Ensure the pipe is cut square before assembly with fittings. Use Cleaning Fluid S243 on both surfaces to be joined. This removes all dirt and machine release agents and softens the surface ready for the chemical solvent-weld. Failure to do this can result in joint failure. Apply Solvent Cement S241/2 evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe and socket. Insert the pipe into the socket with a slight twisting action to the full socket depth. Surplus cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be firm enough to handle in 5 minutes. Please observe the safety precautions detailed on each can of solvent cement. Note: There is a small gap between the O.D. of the pipe and the I.D. of the fitting. This is to allow sufficient solvent cement into the joint to make a good weld. Expansion of the pipework should be allowed for by incorporating expansion couplings at predetermined lengths in long pipe runs. The pipe run should be clipped adjacent to the expansion couplings. No expansion need be allowed for on the Solvent-Weld overflow system. Traps When jointing traps to waste outlets, use the washer supplied, do not over tighten the nut (hand tight plus 1/8 turn). No other jointing compound or materials should be used. P traps can be converted to S pattern by means of BW50 and CW50 conversion bends. Traps are available with either Push-Fit or compression outlets as previously described. All traps are provided with a means of access where required. Support of pipework The table below shows the recommended maximum centres for support of pipework.

Metric W.C. Connection A range of horizontal outlet pan connectors is available for fixing to metric pans as specified in BS 5503. These are supplied with an integral sealing diaphragm which allows for up to 5 misalignment in any direction. Imperial W.C. Connection A range of pan connectors is available to meet the varying pan spigot outside diameters. These are Push-Fit connections, allowing easy removal in the event of the W.C. pan becoming defective at a later date. The polyflex pan connector is particularly adaptable because it allows for up to 5 misalignment in any direction. Shrink-on Connection Fit a replacement soil ring (S360/3 or S360) onto the cast iron pipe spigot i.e. flat edge towards the pipe. Fit the blown socket of the shrink-on connector over the seal and apply gentle heat until the socket shrinks onto the cast iron pipe. This will compress the ring and form a watertight seal. The cast iron spigot should have a relatively smooth surface before making the joint. Roof Weathering The Multipitch Roof Weathering Slate has been designed to provide an easy and effective seal between either 82.4mm or 110mm soil pipes. It is suitable for use on a variety of roof pitches from 10 to 55 and is capable of being utilised on the most severe roof-tile profiles.
Fix clips and brackets using rust-proofed countersunk screws. Use No. 8s on waste and overflow systems and No. 10s on soil system. Soil System Installation Mark the position of brackets, drill and screw fix prior to erecting the stack. Start from the base of the stack and work up. Use S5 or S7 pipe brackets in conjunction with S6 socket brackets. On multi-storey installations, use S8 rust protected metal brackets on both the pipe and sockets. Drain Connection (a) Connections to Salt Glazed and Unjointed Clay The S4 is used to connect to old clay underground drainage systems. Using a sand and cement compound, cement S4 into the clay collar ensuring that the top of the connector is above floor level to allow expansion of the pipework. (b) Connections to Cast Iron The S4A is designed to connect to cast iron underground drainage systems. Use gaskin in the bottom third of the cast iron socket and make the joint using cold caulking compound such as PC4.
