Te calls and emails started last
Tuesday. Lois Cheron was busy
at the Wayside Inn but when she
realized she had missed a couple
of calls from the Middletown
Town Hall she dropped every-
thing to race to the phone. She
was shocked when she was asked
if she wanted to sponsor a can-
non for the reenactment of the
battle of cedar creek in a couple
of weeks. No, she said. Are you
going to make calls asking if any-
one wants to come to dinner at
the Wayside Inn tonight?
Over in Stephens City, Marie
Wible was checking her email
at Artistically Framed. She won-
dered aloud why she was getting
an email from the Middletown
government. Te email requested
that Artistically Framed sponsor
a cannon for the reenactment.
Te email was signed Michele
Fishel, Deputy Clerk, Town of
Middletown.
Ms. Fishel started work last
Monday as a part-time employee.
She makes approximately $10,000
per year. She was hired to help
in the ofce and work on larger
projects like updating the town
code. So why was she spending
her work day trying to sell can-
nons for the Cedar Creek Battle-
feld Foundation, a nonproft or-
ganization south of Middletown?
According to Mayor Charles
H. Harbaugh, IV who sits on the
CCBF board of directors, Ms.
Fishel was making the contacts
at his request. We need to get
along with our neighbors. Te re-
enactment only has 2,000 people
signed up this year to reenact
when usually 4,000 people sign
up. Tey need cannon sponsors
so I took half of the list and gave
the other half to Michele. Asked
why a town employee was spend-
ing time raising funds for CCBF,
Mayor Harbaugh responded that
the reenactment brought a lot of
business to town. He cited the
Italian Touch and the Battlefeld
Market (which is not in Middle-
town) as two businesses that will
do a lot of business that week-
end. He also thought the Super 8
might get additional business.
I was curious whether there
was an increase in business dur-
ing the reenactment week-end
and whether business owners
thought it was a good idea to
have the deputy clerk solicit-
ing cannon sponsors for CCBF.
Most of the business owners in
town were contacted for this ar-
ticle. Te reactions varied, with
some stronger than others. Not
one person thought the solicita-
tion by a town employee was a
good idea. Te level of additional
business garnered over the reen-
actment week-end also varied.
Two businesses expect a signif-
cant increase in business during
the reenactment: Irish Isles and
Italian Touch. Brian Laughlin,
owner of the Irish Isles, said the
reenactment week-end is his big-
gest week-end of the year, second
only to St. Patricks Day. Brian
expects to be paying the town a
nice bump up in sales tax. Trev-
or Strosnider, manager at Italian
Touch also predicts a good week-
end. He is adding staf, including
drivers, because a lot of the reen-
actors order for delivery.
Te remaining business owners
in town report modest, if any, in-
crease in business during the re-
enactment week-end. Anita Hol-
ley at the Wonderful Store, rarely
gets much additional business
since reenactors spend their
money buying reenactment gear.
Te Browns at Why Not An-
tiques also do not expect much
additional business.
Deepak Kumar at the Sunoco
station, and Sherry Bohnenkamp
at Middletown Liberty say they
might sell a few extra gallons of
gas, but not much more. Sherry
said she had more business when
the reenactors registered in her
parking lot, but in spite of a con-
tract she signed with CCBF to
hold registrations in her park-
ing lot, the registration site was
moved elsewhere.
Te Wayside Inn has been busy
in the past, but this year the num-
ber of reservations made by re-
enactors is down. Te Super 8 is
busy that week-end, but they did
not know whether it was reenac-
tors or the usual fall crowd.
Te reaction to the solicitions
by the deputy clerk for the CCBF
range from a mild that is not
right to much stronger language.
Deepak pointed out that CCBF
does not even use Middletown
police any more. Anita believes
the solicitations were a misuse of
town assets for a personal project
of the mayor.
Te strongest words came from
former Middletown Mayor Mark
Brown. He said it was totally in-
appropriate. You do not use town
government employees to sup-
port private organizations, espe-
cially ones that are not even in
town. CCBF is a worthy organi-
zation worthy of volunteer time
and support. Tasking a town em-
ployee to do CCBF work on town
time is a serious error in judg-
ment.
Next year, suggested a couple
of business owners, the mayor
would be better of spending his
time helping the local businesses
hire a bus to transport reenac-
tors into town. Town residents
have asked the CCBF for years to
run the buses through town, to
no avail. Next year, the business
owners plan to hire their own.

A new secret weapon for area Veterans: AMVETS Post 18

Area veterans have a relatively
new friend in the area: Ameri-
can Veterans Post 18. Although
nationally, AMVETS has been
around since the American Veter-
ans of WWII was formed in 1944,
the only local post was founded
about a year ago. Charles Nef of
the national organization, Whit-
ey Turner from the Harrison-
burg chapter, and Roy Angus, the
commander of the West Virginia
chapters got together to form a
local AMVETS organizations.
During its frst year, Post 18 held
various recruiting drives, taking
membership from zero to thirty
one members. Tey advertise in
local papers, and hold recruiting
drives at such varied places as the
Golden Corral and events at the
Cedar Creek Battlefeld. It also
maintains a continuous dialog
with other veteran organizations
such as the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, the American Legion, and
the Disabled Veterans of Amer-
ica. However, unlike these other
veteran organizations, there are
no requirements to joining AM-
VETS other than being on active
duty or being a veteran that was
honorably discharged from any
branch of the United States mili-
tary.
Te Post meets every fourth
Tursday at VFW Post 2124 in
Stephens City. All qualifed per-
sons are encouraged to attend the
meetings simply show up at the
appointed time and ask for the
AMVETS meeting.
According to Richard Van Nor-
ton, the Post commander, the
Post has some very specifc goals
for the next year. Post 18 hopes
to double its membership from
thirty one to sixty two. Te Post
wants to support local veterans
in fnding jobs, in enrolling in the
Veteran Administration health
care system, and in returning to
the classroom. Te support of
Post 18 includes interfacing with
all of the above areas to under-
standing the various markets.
Members will drive veterans to
any interviews, consultations or
classes as needed.
Te Post also raises funds to
support its activities. It had a
BBQ stand at recent events at the
Cedar Creek Battlefeld. Te Post
will be selling BBQ at the Battle
of Cedar Creek in Middletown
during the third week-end in Oc-
tober.
In the near future, the Post
hopes to ofer t-shirt sales and
yard sales. It wants to supple-
ment its good deeds by providing
bicycles to underprivileged chil-
dren during the holidays.
According to Walter Jagiello,
fnance chair, the Post wants to
make a diference as a social or-
ganization other than being just
social. However, noted Jagiello,
the endless camaraderie with
other service members and vet-
erans is priceless.
Even in its infancy, Post 18 is
showing that it can make a difer-
ence. Te Post set up a revolving
scholarship at Lord Fairfax Com-
munity College. Veterans who are
eligible to attend the college, but
have not received their veteran
benefts, can draw on the schol-
arship to buy their books until
their benefts are granted. Once
benefts are granted, the veteran
will repay the fund for the beneft
of the next veteran who needs
help.

Tey came from down the
street, across town, neighboring
counties and neighboring states.
Tey were lined up by the time
of the 10 am opening, and they
came all day. Tey parked in the
parking lot; they parked on the
grass. Tey strolled over from
other parking lots. And they kept
on coming.
Was it the zombie apocalypse?
No, it was the Winchester, Fred-
erick and Clarke Counties SPCAs
frst ever pet give away. Accord-
ing to Margo Bach, the assistant
director of the SPCA, there were
so many animals at the Feather-
bed Lane facility that something
had to be done. Te day was
well advertised, and the turn out
showed. Ninety fve animals were
adopted last Saturday: eighty cats
and ffteen dogs. Even more peo-
ple came to the SPCA on Sunday
and Monday, still hoping to adopt
and willing to pay the standard
fees.
Potential forever families still
needed to go through the stan-
dard application process; only
the fees were waived. Te pro-
cess helps insure that individu-
als adopting are truly committed
to their newest member of the
family. By giving the pets away,
the SPCA avoided euthanizing
healthy animals. Te SPCA wants
to become a no kill shelter.
According to Margo, the Feath-
erbed Lane facility is the open
admission facility for Winchester
City, i.e., it must take any animal
brought to the facility from Win-
chester. She says that the Freder-
ick County facility has even more
animals brought to it than the
Featherbed Lane facility.
Some of the people that went to
the SPCA on Saturday left with
new family members. Nicholas
Els and Amanda Lizama of Ste-
phens City said it was a spur of
the moment decision to come
and adopt Bella. Nicholas had
been thinking of adopting a
dog, and the moment, and Bella,
seemed right. Amy Hernandez
and her children Kaelyn and Ca-
leb drove from Front Royal at the
spur of the moment. Tey hoped
to take home Akela, an older
cat. Tyler Tinsman of Frederick
County adopted Lucy, a domestic
short hair cat, for his Mom. (Yes,
he asked her frst!)
Candy Poe of Winchester
showed true determination in
her eforts to adopt a new cat.
She went to the SPCA on Friday
and picked out four cats. She re-
turned Saturday morning with
her children. She then returned
again in the afternoon to bring
Jazzy home.
Brittany and Brian Davenport
and their daughter Kenzi, drove
ffty miles from Bealetown, Vir-
ginia to fnd the right dog for their
family. Britanny said they already
have two birthdays in September
and were looking for a third. Te
family saw a segment on the pet
give away the evening before on
the television. Tey were delight-
ed to get the opportunity to save
a dog. After much playing and in-
teraction in the doggy play area,
they left with Minks. Te group

looked like a family even before
leaving the SPCA.
Roxie put on a real good show
for the Holmes family from Berke-
ley Springs. She ran in circles,
played with her leash and showed
a lot of love and friendliness. Te
Holmes were looking for a com-
panion for their dog Zeuss. Guess
Zeuss was not enthusiastic; fun-
loving Roxie is still available for
adoption. So fashion is Borrada,
a sweet girl that recently was the
top model at Posh Pets fashion
show.
Not everyone went home hap-
py. A couple from Gaithersburg,
Maryland drove to Winchester
looking for two six to eight week
old kittens. Tey recently lost
their cats to old age and were
ready to try again. Sue and Cathy
Murphy of Winchester also went
home empty handed. Tey were
looking for a companion cat for
their current cat. Alas, all of the
cats were gone!
Margo hopes not to have an-
other give away day, because she
hopes they will never get that
crowded again. But, she says, it is
nice to know that the public will
respond with such enthusiasm to
an emergency. She wanted a big
thank you to go out to everyone.
If you are still thinking of adopt-
ing, dont give up hope. Te Feath-
erbed Lane facility still has two
cats and a couple of dogs up for
adoption. Tere also are mother
cats with young litters being fos-
tered until the kittens are old
enough to fnd their own forever
homes. A number of animals are
being spayed or neutered, so they
will be returning soon. Strays
must be held a certain number of
days in case their owner arrives
to bring them home. If not, these
animals will be available too.

Te Middletown Town Coun-
cil started its work session with
a visit from developer David
Holliday. Mr. Holliday is seeking
minor changes to the SIP for
the development proposed by I-
81, to the east of Main Street in
Middletown. Te changes call for
the street lights to be added, one
to each residence, the removal
of one of the two proposed side-
walks and a change to the berm
between the development and I-
81. Instead of having a traditional
berm, Mr. Holliday wants to keep
the current vegetation on the
property and add a screen of trees
on the house side of the property.
Te council generally agreed with
the proposed changes.
Mr. Holliday believes that the
prospect for development is bet-
ter now than it was seven years
ago. He has a builder interested
in the project that is crunching
numbers. Depending on the out-
come of the number crunching,
Mr. Holliday expects develop-
ment to start in either forty fve
days or a year and a half.
Te price of the one and two
story colonial homes with front
porches will be in the $250,000
to $300,000 range. Te develop-
ment will have a homeowners as-
sociation.
Michele Fishel was introduced
as the new part time deputy
clerk.
Councilor Carole Snyder, head
of the facilities committee, noted
that the town hall roof was suc-
cessfully replaced. A discussion
ensued about the cleaning inside
of town hall, the trimming of
brush outside of town hall, the
fact that the gutters are full and
that cats are getting underneath
town hall. Councilor John Cope-
land will look into the matters.
Te council discussed whether
and how to compensate employ-
ees that use their own equipment
on the job. No particular consen-
sus was reached.
Councilor Trip Chewning not-
ed that each department has its
own time sheet. Te council de-
cided to require all departments
to use the time sheets used by the
employees located in town hall.
Councilor Chewning also
pointed out that there is noth-
ing in the new policies regarding
expensing meals during training.
Te former policy will be added
back in to the new policy.
Te council agreed to sponsor a
$200 cannon during the upcom-
ing battle of cedar creek reenact-
ment.
Councilor Mark Davis told the
council that he plans on redistrib-
uting the memorandum prepared
by the planning and zoning com-
mission regarding a crosswalk
near the Wayside Teatre. Te
memorandum was distributed
while a prior councilor was the
liaison to the planning and zon-
ing commission. Te memoran-
dum was never distributed. Many
councilors, including Councilors
Copeland and Chewning, argued
that new sidewalks were needed
before a crosswalk was needed.
Councilor Davis advised every-
one that the planning and zoning
commission meetings are start-
ing at 7:30 pm, instead of the
usual 7:00 pm.
Councilor Copeland reported
that the public works depart-
ment believes it can use a piece of
equipment used by car washes to
upgrade its method of water used
when pressing at the water treat-
ment plant. Te equipment can
be installed by town employees.
By using the car wash equipment
instead of the water treatment
plant recommended equipment,
the town can cut its cost from
$40,000 to $20,000.
Te council also discussed three
items concerning Min Street: re-
placing fags, reselling sponsor
fags and putting out trash cans.
Tere will be a red ribbon cer-
emony at the next town council
meeting. Te Shenandoah Young
Marines will be in attendance to
support drug and alcohol abuse
prevention.
During a talk about the up-
coming budget, it was noted that
Dollar General will pay any of its
taxes due over and above the $30
business license fee in January
2013.

Te frst day of October
brought in a fresh change for the
Amari family and employees of
Stephens Citys Anthonys Pizza.
Tey made the move from their
long-time location on Main St. to
161 Warrior Drive.
Te new place is across from
Sherando High School and Own-
er Joe Amari says that business
has been great the frst two days.
Were all settled in and 100 per
cent happy with the move. Its
bigger, better and newer. Te old
building was 50-60 years old and
this one is only six, he said.
Te restaurant has dine-in ta-
bles and pick up and delivery ser-
vice, but now theres also a drive-
up window.
Tis is convenient for custom-
ers. Tey dont have to get out of
their car in bad weather, he said.
Hes had a few comments that
people like the new place because
its closer to their homes and they
think its a better location.
Its a nice-looking store, every-
thing tastes the same but better,
newer and fresher, said one of
the restaurants loyal fans.
And in honor of football season
and to show support for Sheran-
do High Schools team, after any
game they play whether home or
away, customers can get one free
topping for every touchdown
they make--on Mondays only.
We support the team and have
photos of the teams in the res-
taurant, and their colors. Its the
Home of the Warriors, he said.
Te Amaris consider the busi-
ness to be a family afair. Joe and
his wife Roseanne keep every-
thing running well with the help
of, not only their great employ-
ees, but their three sons, Felice,
Joseph, or JoJo, and Richard as
well. Fourteen-year-old Rich-
ard has been put in charge of the
pick-up window and appears to
like the idea.
Im going to own my own place
one day. Ill take after my Dad,
said Richard proudly.

To illustrate this, Joe told a sto-
ry about a man who came in last
week, who said he needed help
with the food for his 10-year-old
daughters birthday party. Te fa-
ther had been told by her doctor
that it might be her last because
of her battle with a life-threat-
ening illness, and a lot of people
were expected to come to it.
With no hesitation, I gave him
30 pizzas, said Joe.
Were good-hearted and were
not here to take money from you.
Te most important thing in our
business is that were there to
help out. We do a lot and donate
pizzas for schools, soccer teams
and parks. We try to help out as
much as we can, especially in this
economy.

his lecture, McPherson will take

Dr. McPherson received the
1989 Pulitzer Prize and was rec-
ognized in 1986 as the George
Henry Davis Professor Emeritus
of United States History at Princ-
eton University. Te author of 20
books and numerous other book
and journal contributions about
the Civil War, Dr. McPherson
has spent his career developing
an exceptional command of the

On Oct. 18, 1767, Charles Mason
and Jeremiah Dixon complete their
survey of the boundary between the
colonies of Pennsylvania and Mary-
land, as well as areas that would
become Delaware and West Virginia.
The Mason-Dixon line created the
boundary at a northern latitude of 39
degrees and 43 minutes.
On Oct. 21, 1797, the USS Consti-
tution, a 44-gun U.S. Navy frigate built
to fight Barbary pirates off the coast of
Tripoli, is launched in Boston Harbor.
During the War of 1812, the Constitu-
tion won its enduring nickname Old
Ironsides after witnesses claimed that
the British shots merely bounced off
the Constitutions sides.
On Oct. 19, 1931, David Cornwell,
later known as spy novelist John le
Carre, is born in Poole, England. He
published his first spy novel, Call for
the Dead, in 1961. The novel, like his
second, A Murder of Quality (1962),
featured spy George Smiley.
On Oct. 15, 1946, Herman Goer-
ing, commander in chief of the Luft-
waffe and head of the Gestapo, dies

gonian Dick Fosbury wins gold medal

ing a serious energy crisis and gasoline

On Oct. 16, 1987, 18-month-old
Jessica McClure is rescued after
being trapped for 58 hours in an aban-
doned water well in Midland, Texas.
McClure had fallen through the 8-
inch-wide opening of an abandoned
well in the backyard of her aunts
home day-care center. After dropping
about 22 feet into the well, the little
girl became stuck.

Pumpkin Cheesecake
w/ Ginger Cream Topping
3/4 c. granulated sugar, divided
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
3/4 c. frmly packed brown sugar, divided
1 tsp vanilla
3/4 c. graham cracker crumbs
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 c. fnely chopped pecans
1 (16oz.) can pumpkin
1/4 c. butter or margarine, melted
3 (8 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese, softened
1 T. all-purpose four
3 lg. eggs
1-1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
16 pecan halves for garnish
Combine 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, graham cracker
crumbs, 1/2 cup pecans and butter; press into bottom and 1 inch up
sides of a lightly greased 9 springform pan. Cover and chill 1 hour.
Combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar four and
next 6 ingredients; set aside. Beat cream cheese at medium speed
with an electric mixer until creamy. Add pumpkin mixture beating
well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition. Pour mix-
ture into prepared crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 55 minutes. Cool
completely in pan on a wire rack. Spoon ginger cream topping over
cheesecake. Cover and chill at least 8 hours. To serve, carefully
remove sides of pan; garnish cheesecake if desired.
Ginger Cream Topping
1 c. whipping cream
1/4 c. minced crystallized ginger
1 (8 oz.) ctn. sour cream
3 T. dark rum
2 T. sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Combine frst 3 ingredients in a bowl. beat at high speed with a
mixer until soft peaks form. Fold in Ginger, rum and vanilla.

million dollars to teachers across the

work they do with students each day.
The new Walmart on Route 522 South
has chosen Aylor Middle School to be
part of the program (Frederick County
Middle School was selected to par-
ticipate by another local Walmart).
During this event, representatives
from Walmart will be presenting 20
teachers at Aylor with $50 gift cards
($1,000 worth of gift cards total).
Walmart is also providing some re-
freshments for the staff at Aylor as
part of this event.

Out Day. The James Wood High School
FBLA has decided to do a service
project this year for U.S troops who
are deployed overseas. Everyone at
the school is being asked to wear red
on October 12 as part of the schools
RED (Remember Everyone Deployed)
OUT day. The FBLA is selling RED t-
shirts and the proceeds will be used
to purchase gifts that will be sent to
troops for Christmas. The shirts will
be sold during lunch and at JWHS
football games in October. Boxes are
also being placed in each classroom
to allow students and teachers to do-
nate gifts. Around November 1, the
gifts will be mailed to the troops.
