Scripture: I Cor 9:19-27 Sermon: “Living to Win” Theme: How do Christians relate to a world where competiton and winning/losing define most lives? Not by backing away from challenges, but by “running to win” for a different reason. What does it mean for Christians to strive for excellence? Do we have to be the “everybody gets a trophy” crowd in a Super Bowl world? Video: – Youtube video on a father-son running team, athletic images (in keeping with the Super Bowl) but not too specific to a particular team or player Music: Sung Communion, Possible spoof on Chariots of Fire theme Note: Begin Thank You Slips
February 8 – Women’s Retreat
Scripture: Isaiah 40:21-31 Mark 1:21-28 Sermon: “Surprising Power” Theme: Function is to talk about the new strength that comes to those who wait on the Lord. This service will be an invitation to 40 Hours in the Desert retreat for Men, as well as a time for encouragement. I will parallel God’s power revealed to the defeated people of Israel (who thought that God had forgotten them), and God’s power revealed through Jesus in the life of the demon-possessed man. Video: think of unseen expressions of power in the world (wind, sun rays, electricity, e.g.) to highlight the theme of power – include also images of Jesus healing Music: Some version of “On Eagles Wings” would be a hit for the congregation (ask Neil Westlotorn to solo?) Need: Way to get men to the service….
February 15 – Small Group Sunday
Scripture: Mark 4:26-29 Ephesians 4:1-6,11-13 Sermon: “Do What You Can” (a teaching sermon – with outline and insert!) Theme: How we reach people for Christ/How Christ works conversion in our hearts. From the parable..when each one does what they do well (scattering seed, praying and waiting, harvesting) then the harvest happens. When we understand our gifting and work together, then God works transformation through us. Video: Seeds, growth, harvest…as well as people doing the work of ministry – meditate on the five-fold gifting in Ephesians 4:11 Music: #583 “You Are the Seed” (as solo or congregational song), maybe a revival of “Bringing in the Sheaves” Note: We are looking for a testimony to the power of small groups to change a person’s life. Possibly launching an e-mail small group for young families as well. Reintroduce Growing in Faith brochure? February 22 – Servant Dinner, Nursery Dedication Scripture: II Kings 2:1-12 Sermon: “Hand-Me-Down Faith” Theme: Handing down the faith that has been given to us….receiving the faith that is handed down to us. Faith only gets better when its “second-hand” Video: play with images of old clothes, and with a cloth like the prophetic mantle that Elisha receives in the passage – images of chariots, a whirlwind, fire would be good for the time after the sermon Music: KICK Choir
February 25 – Ash Wednesday – Ashes and Communion
Scripture: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21 Psalm 51 Video: None for this service Music: 269, “Lord Who Throughout these Forty Days”, musical version of #292 “What Wondrous Love is This” toward the end
