Prospects for B.E.Graduate Marine Engineer in Merchant Navy.

The sea offers a rewarding career with prospects for a bright future and ample opportunities for professional and financial enhancement. The Merchant Navy is an International Profession. Although Pakistan has a small merchant fleet, there is a growing demand for seafarers in the International Market. Shipping companies and ship managers from various foreign countries are hiring officers and crew from all maritime nations, which includes a high demand from Pakistan .A seagoing career demands a high standard of discipline with sound physical and mental health to be able to face the challenges of the sea. Seafarers are required to be trained and qualified according to International Standards which are laid down in I.M.O' (International Maritime Organization) Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW95). The Institute of Maritime Studies, Lahore (IMS), is approved by the Govt. of Pakistan, Ministry of Ports & Shipping Wing, Karachi. The Institute is well equipped for training of nautical and engine departments. A library of maritime subjects on computer (CBT) and books are available for students. The training has started since 1995 and until now ten (10) batches of Deck Cadets, thirteen (13) batches of GP-III and two (2) batches of BE-Marine Engineers have been trained at the IMS. The fee schedule for BE Engineers training course is as follows:Admission Fee Rs. 30,000/Monthly Fee/12 months Rs. 120,000/- (10,000 P.M) Total Rs. 150,000/All mandatory and ancillary courses are approved. Additional expenses on transportation, messing and lodging at various training sites and cities shall be borne by the trainee concerned. Stay in the IMS hostel is optional and may be availed at reasonable rates. The total training period for marine engineers is 12 months mandatory workshop period including one week for engine simulator, two weeks computer familiarization course, one-month marine engineer familiarization course and one month for 5 mandatory short courses. After qualifying the candidates will be advised to proceed to Karachi for the following:1. Engine simulator course at PMA Karachi. 2. MMD eye test, Medical. 3. Issuance of NOC from CESS of DGP&S. 4. Issuance of SSB (Seaman Service Book) by Shipping office. After obtaining SSB the candidate is eligible to join a ship through any prospective ship management and crewing company. IMS will also refer engineers to various shipping companies who then may employ them on board their principals ships.

All seafarers are provided with the following facilities for the period of their contract on board ship: . Transportation to and from the ship borne by the ship owners. . Free accommodation on board with victual ling. . Uniforms and protective apparel as per rules. . Free medical facilities/treatment. . Compensation for loss of baggage, injury and death will be awarded to the next of kin, according to the rules of the crewing agreement & insurance. On first contracts the Marine Engineers will be employed on board ships whose gross monthly salary would range from $300 to $700, which may include earned leave wages etc. The range of wages depends on the type of owner and the nature of trade. After a minimum sea service of 15 18 months the candidate shall be eligible for first examination of competency (officer incharge of an engine room watch) i.e. class-II engineer officer. Some of the papers are exempted for B.E. / BSc. Marine Engineers. After passing the examination of competency the initial rank as 4 the Engineer Officer receives a gross salary of $1400 $2000. Over the next 3-4 years the officer can progress to obtain promotions to the rank of 3 RD and 2 nd engineer. Now he can prepare for Class-I marine engineer certificate and eventually will be promoted to rank of chief engineer whose salary is in the range of $4000 to $5000 per month. After attaining the rank of 2 nd Engineer or Chief Engineer lucrative marine administrative positions are available ashore, a few are listed below: 1. The Ship Engineering Superintendent in any ship Management company. 2. Lecturer in teaching Maritime subjects. 3. Incharge of a power plant ashore. 4. Surveyor in classification societies. 5. Marine Engineer Surveyor of MMD & DGP&S. 6. Can open repair & maintenance workshop for Ships and other machinery. 7. Ship supplier of Lubricants & spare parts 8. Expert of refrigeration plant etc.
