ULSTER Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt has sacked his deputy leader John McCallister for a speech in which he said that the UUP was sleepwalking into unionist unity.

The speech, revealed in Saturdays News Letter, was made to a small group of Young Unionists at a private dinner to commemorate the centenary of the Ulster Covenant and came after mounting unhappiness among some UUP members at a series of joint initiatives with the DUP . Last night former UUP vicechairman Terry Wright, who in

2010 conducted the most detailed internal analysis of the party for years, said that unless other reasons behind the disciplinary decision are made public, it seems like a purge. Although the party said that Mr McCallister had been dismissed for his criticisms of the partys closer alignment with the DUP , yesterday the party published

his speech in full on its website and last night it remained there as one of the top news items. It is understood that Mr Nesbitt who defeated Mr McCallister by a margin of five to one to become UUP leader in March took the speech as an attack on his leadership. Turn to page 8
