With the euphoria

With this being the 21st century, the most modern era that mankind has ever enjoyed in its relatively young history, they are many modern rights that Jamaica currently enjoys that leaves many people around the world envious and thinking that there is something about their lives that is left to be desired. Being independent, with the ability of being free, having a vibrant culture and having a national brand that is envied by all and second to none, the Jamaicans or should I say our elected officials have never missed the opportunity of providing the electorate with a sense of hope and well-being. But with all that has been said, Jamaicas achievements, with which it can only be pleased. One cannot truly appreciate the significance of Jamaicas achievements through its independence and the maintenance of such independence uninterrupted for the past fifty years without firstly fully appreciating the concepts or a working definition of the term independence. According to the popular web based dictionary www.dictionary.com independence is freedom from control, influence, aid or the likes of others or it is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-governance, the opposite of independence is a dependent territory. Even with some independent nations, do we not shared the same privileges as a people; they are independent, but feel dependent and by that I mean the sense of freedom that comes with being independent is not shared by most independent nations. Elected officials need to run with the euphoria and not from it, but embrace it, because euphoria may be the catalyst that allows progress to take place with the common side-effect of pain or sacrifices, subdued.

Jamaica was made an independent nation August 6th, 1962 during the heights of the Cold War between the United States, her allies and the Soviet Union. During this period there were heightened tensions within the Caribbean region, and not only for the Caribbean, but those nations that appeared to pose a threat to the United States if they were to support her enemies, or if they themselves had the ability to threaten the United States themselves. There was much bullying of the smaller Caribbean states from the United States who recognized her vulnerability to attacks from the Caribbean region as well as the importance of the support and corporation from all the countries within. For Jamaica to be a colony of Britain who was at this time a key ally of the United States and to have asked for independence at this stage would not only have been a risky but dangerous move because the atmosphere was so tense that the simplest hint of disloyalty to the super powers could have resulted in military action and/or diplomatic sanctions as was the case of Cuba who until today still suffers greatly from an embargo which was placed on it during this same time by the United States. One needs also to examine the relationship at this time that existed between Jamaica and Cuba, in which both countries at this time shared a close working relationship that continued throughout Jamaicans early days as an independent nation, but many would say that Jamaica missed the opportunity or the lack thereof, to stand up to the United States and to be defiant, but as much as this may have seemed likely because of the apparent influence Cuba had on Jamaica. Jamaica had no business to do so, it was only aligned with Britain and Britains stance was that of Jamaica and the Jamaica leadership had no idea of allowing outside non-ally forces to influence which side it took during the cold-war. Jamaica risked all and won by securing its independence from Great Britain during this trying period. Having gained our independence was the first of many

significant strides along the road which stretched fifty long years. We made other remarkable progresses towards nation building in the form of self-governance having successfully held our first democratic elections and electing our first Prime Minister Sir Alexander Bustamante in 1968. The challenges of a new nation wore on and our chosen path threw us its curves in the form of financial and economic challenges throughout the early 1970s to 1980s and the political struggles of this emerging new nation almost saw us having a civil war in the early 1970s but with the determination of our security forces and the resolution of our elected leaders we pulled through, not undefeated determined to make the necessary policy changes to remedy the past and brighten the future. It is from this troubled past that the brand Jamaica was born, the undying spirit of tolerance and the determination to pull forward ahead in spite of everything negative that was happening. This is what we marketed as brand Jamaica, this unique blend of culture, languages and social conditions. Having gained independence from Britain meant in many aspects that we were on our own and the limited resources that existed through bauxite and agriculture would have to sustained in very special arraignments in order for our nation to survive and since self-governance was a learning process from this new Jamaica then any mistake along this route would cost us dearly, nonetheless in fifty years Jamaica even in its current economic situation has accomplished much when compared to other countries of the region that had gain independence at a much later stage which means they would have benefitted much more and much longer from their respective countries, Jamaica has among many other things one of the best education system in the region. Our health and life expectancy are of first world standards; housing and living condition continues to improve significantly; and our financial institutions

even though challenged have attained world acceptable standards and growth. Our rich cultural awareness and experiences gained through this period is now world renowned. Hence one cannot overlook the overwhelming sense of nation pride and patriotism that have befallen our nation on our golden jubilee and our monumental achievements of our beloved athletes at the thirty third Olympiad, our athletes whilst facing challenges from first world and developing countries dominated the stages of London and those before and set world and Olympic records that seems humanly impossible. With our national celebrations of our golden jubilee, we used the time to reflect to see how far we have progressed and how drastically better off our people are fifty years after independence, when compared with where we were before we became independent. Our athletes have provided the country with a sense of pride and cohesiveness amongst the dueling parties, persons that belong to different socioeconomic backgrounds and even tolerant and those who display no tolerance or lack of a better word the ignorant among us. Notwithstanding their achievements one has to take into account economic and political challenges of a trying nation that sacrifices to pay their admissions to these games and the grim fate of uncertainty that hangs over the countrys economic and political system as we celebrate and dominate in our endeavours on the international stage. Fifty years of independence in a Caribbean territory such as Jamaica must be viewed with applause and distinction, the moral challenges and social decay coupled with economic and political hardships have fashioned a culture among the people where rough and trough is not only more morally acceptable but fashionable, we as a nation has learn to do much with little and to excel with merely sufficient. So as we laid the well-earned accolades at the feet of
