WEBSITE: http://wolfville.ednet.ns.ca September 27, 2012 Dear Parents / Guardians:

We are off to a great start this year with the month of September nearly behind us. There are many activities and clubs underway in the school such as soccer, cross-country, Lego League, Student Council, Breakfast Club and MORE!!! We raised $500 throughout the school in support of the Terry Fox Foundation Thanks to everyone who supported that event. In October we will be partnering with the Town of Wolfville Recreation Department who have planned a number of activities centered around the theme of Walktober. Please encourage your son or daughter to walk, bike, jog, or use some other active means of transportation to get to school and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Wolfville Staff have a number of initiatives underway in the area of School Improvement. The entire school is working together to promote a positive school climate and to raise awareness and eliminate bullying at Wolfville School. We had a very successful anti-bullying assembly the second week of school, teachers have reviewed our Matrix of Expectations with students and hundreds of Wolf Awards (positive participation ballots) have been handed out to students displaying positive, appropriate behaviorswell done! Staff continue work on the other two goals centered around improving student writing and meeting the needs of all learners. The first Home and School meeting of the year was held earlier this week on September 25. We had great attendance at the first meeting and the group has many great activities and fundraisers planned for the year. There is plenty of room for new members so come out and support your child and school. The first SAC meeting will take place next week. Thank you to the many parents who attended the Open House sessions. Your support and interest in the school and your children is greatly appreciated! Steve Keddy, Principal

Fundraiser
L.I.F.E. (Learning Is For Everyone)
At Wolfville School, we believe that all students should be able to participate fully in school. We are pleased to have a LIFE benevolent fund to assist with specific student needs related to learning. This fund is used to ensure that no student is prevented from participating fully in their classes or school-based experiences because of their financial situation. It is only through the generous financial support of local businesses and residents that the LIFE fund can exist. Heres how you can help: Provide us with your business card and for only $20 we will include it in our monthly newsletter. Its low-cost advertising for you and the proceeds go to a great cause! Call Mrs. Davison or Mrs. Fox in the school office at 542-6055, or drop by with your business card. If you dont have a business but would like to make a donation, that would be great too. Thank you in advance for your support.

TREATY DAY Treaty Day, held annually on October 1st, celebrates the signing of the 1752 Treaty of Friendship and Peace as well as marks the beginning of Mi'kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia. In 1986, Grand Chief of the Mi'kmaq Nation, Donald Marshall Sr., invited all Mi'kmaw to observe October 1, 1986 and every year thereafter as Treaty Day to commemorate the unique and special relationship that exists between the Mi'kmaq and her Majesty. The purpose of Treaty Day is to promote public awareness about the Mikmaw culture and heritage for all citizens of Nova Scotia. Every year, events are held in Halifax to celebrate and remind citizens of the importance of the Treaty of 1752, including a parade, cultural showcase, feast, and award ceremony. For a schedule of events please visit the Tripartite Forum at: http://www.tripartiteforum.com/ MIKMAQ HISTORY MONTH The Mikmaq are the founding people of Nova Scotia. Archaeological evidence suggests our ancestors, prior to European contact, have been living in and occupying what is today known as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland, Maine, and the Gaspe Bay Peninsula for close to 13,000 years. A culturally rich and vibrant civilization has developed and existed over this period. In order to celebrate and share Mikmaq culture with all of Nova Scotia, in 1993 Premier John Savage and Mikmaq Grand Chief Ben Syliboy declared the month of October Mikmaq History Month. Events and celebrations will be taking place across the province, and a schedule will be posted on the Office of Aboriginal Affairs website: http://www.gov.ns.ca/abor/office/what-we-do/publiceducation-and-awareness/mikmaq-history/
