BARANGAY UP Pep shows its support. AUGUST DELA CRUZ
HE UP Pep Squad has been known as the squad that brings strong, innovative and, at times, shocking concepts in its routines every year in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition (CdC). And this year was no different, except that the stakes got a bit higher and the competition tougher.
Their recent conquest in the UAAP CdC capped their third straight championship and placed them in a tie with their old rivals, the University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe for most titles, with eight. But the road to the top was not without bumps and falls. The squad literally had to endure a fall from one of their members in one of their lifts during the end of their routine which left the UP crowd uneasy and the team concerned as they waited the announcement of the winners. At the back of my mind, I was worried about the fall during the last part of our routine, said assistant coach Pio Opinaldo. I thought we might not win knowing that most of the teams had a clean or perfect run. But despite the fall, it was the strong routine that saved the day for the Diliman Pride. Sporting shaved heads, while donning minimalistic suits that symbolized not only the iconic Oblation but also freedom and equality, the UP Pep towered above the rest. Our routine had a lot of difficult stunts which I believe earned us enough points and helped us earn the top spot even with that mistake in the end, added Opinaldo. One of the teams three cocaptains, Irish Planes, said the squads creativity also played a big role in this years victory. There were a lot of key elements in our routine which we really needed. Aside from the difficulty of our stunts and pyramids, our creative choreog-
raphy and clean transitions also gave as a good head start, said Planes. With the Far Eastern University Cheering Squad consistently improving every year as well as the other squads who have been easily discounted in the past, the UP Pep Squad believes this years CDC edition was one of the toughest in their championship years. The stress level and the pressure to win the three-peat and the 8th title also affected us and it meant that we also had to outdo ourselves, said Opinaldo. Aside from the growing competition, this years task was to become better than what we did last year, and it is always more difficult to beat yourself, he added. For me, this year was the toughest. People just see the end product on the day of the competition but they dont see the struggles that we had to go through and the sacrifices we had to make to get there, from the stunts, to the costumes and even the hair, ended Planes.

STRETCHING
GETTING ready for the tough grind RUTH NAVARRA
HIS year is probably one of the biggest heartbreaks that the FEU Cheering Squad experienced. They came so close. They were separated from the eight-time champions, UP Pep Squad, by a hairs breadth of 0.9 point.
They were perfect. They did everything perfectly. They did nothing wrong, said coach Jacqueline Alolor-Alota. The squad unleashed their wild side with their routine. Months of disciplined training showed in the movements that

were fierce and fluid. They came out strong and synchronized from start to finish. For the first time in years,

they did away with the bulky props that hindered their movements on the mat. They pulled off a surprise in the end with Tamaraw headdresses and tails that they pulled out of their uniforms. Their fans showed their support by sporting similar hats. They executed their routine almost flawlessly. Alota was spotted crying with happiness after their performance. Everything appeared to work for them. However, it was still not enough to win the top prize. It was a devastating blow for the team. I will talk to them and make them feel that I will be here for them no matter what, said Alota the day after UAAP CdC.
FTER years of trying, the National University Pep Squads wish was finally heard by their fairy godmother, granting the squad its very first happy ending after bagging the Top 3 spot in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition.
Hindi na lang namin pinapansin ang mga sinasabi ng ibang tao. Masaya kami sa nangyari at iyon ang importante. She is also thankful of the NU community for supporting the squad all throughout the competition; they couldnt have done it without them. Sila ang reason kung bakit kami naging matatag at mas tatatag pa sa susunod na taon. Salamat dahil naniwala sila sa amin. Hindi namin ito magagawa kung wala sila. The senior cheerleader also clarified that the battle is not over yet and they will not be contented of running third place only. Abangan nila next year dahil magbibigay ulit kami ng mas maganda pang laban. Indeed, there is no more holding back the NU Pep Squad.
ITS OVER
NUs long wait to join the big guns is over.
RUTH NAVARRA
The NU Pep Squads Disney-inspired theme surprised the jampacked Mall of Asia Arena as they also placed third in the UAAP Group Stunts Exhibition. We are overwhelmed, said NU Pep Squad Captain Rose Anne De Leon. Honestly, we were expecting to enter the Top 3 because of the difficulty of our routine compared to the other schools. True enough, the NU Pep Squads hard work paid off and they werent just cheering with heart and passion but also with a lot more confidence compared to last year. Inisip talaga namin na mananalo kami habang nagpeperform, added De Leon. Gusto namin na gumawa ng history sa NU community at iyon talaga ang naging motivation namin. The captain also shared that despite all the criticisms that they received after the unexpected win, she is just thankful about what happened. Were just so blessed na nanalo kami, said De Leon.

that host Boom Gonzales told the crowd that the average scores for the winners will not be announced. Instead, the judges ranked the teams. It was met with a few boos from the audience. Hey, Im only the messenger, Gonzales was prompted to say. Still, the squad took the result in stride. They have no plans to contest the results. Instead, theyre focusing on their game plan for the future. To be on top again, (we need to have the) humility that we once had. (We need to get the) champion mentality. As they say if you want to be champions, you have to train and act like one, said Pagaduan.
POTENTIAL

For the SDTs avid supporters, its not exactly a bad finish. After all, the group outperformed expectations. National Cheerleading Competition pundits predicted they will land a mere sixth. The squad is going through a lot of changes, its members composed mostly of rookies. This years performance was basically a showcase of potential. They did well, they did their best and they did what they could, said SDT coach Ramon Pagaduan IV . Departing from their usual fierceness, the members of the SDT chose Rios carnival atmosphere as their theme, donning bright red and orange uniforms that blended with the schools traditional colors. Their routine had that happy element that their president Danrev Dimaculangan had earlier hinted on. The only thing that didnt go according to plan was the missed lifts at the beginning of the routine. The on-the-spot changes in judging (cost us our third ranking). We were supposed to be third if the total average score is to be implemented, says Pagaduan. A picture of the scoresheet was leaked to different websites, social media and online forums after the competition. The picture showed that the SDT garnered a total of 85.56. On the same picture, the third placersNU Pep Squad got a total average score of 85.16. It was only before the winners were proclaimed
OING against the big dogs with nothing to lose, the Adamson Pep Squad showed it was willing to take on all comers last Saturday.
Though failing to send shockwaves in the cheerleading world, the San Marcelinobased squad posed a formidable challenge against the top-tier teams of the UAAP , brandishing their own style of cheerleading done the Adamson way. Behind their experienced coach Joseph Mascarias, the Falcon cheerers unveiled a near-flawless routine to go with their flashy and sparkling attire. I couldnt be happier with
the teams performance, said Mascarias, a veteran of the field for 13 years now. In an attempt to touch trendier and the latest themes, the Adamson Pep Squad used a K-Pop-inspired performance to open the festivities at the 2012 UAAP Cheerdance Competitions. With all of its members sporting hairstyles inspired by the Korean stars who are now popular in the country, the squad flaunted a performance that was a culmination of what
they worked on for the last few months. Worth it lahat ng pagod namin sa practice, said 20year-old team captain Dan Albert Ravino. Whatever happens, were satisfied sa pinakita namin sa audience. Aiming for a surprise entry to the top three like they did in 2001, the Adamson Pep Squad finished seventh this year, beating only the UE Pep Squad. Despite the results, Mascarias couldnt even be more proud of his team. I feel rewarded with the dedication these guys are giving, he said. They gave their all in that six-minute performance and I couldnt even be happier.
GETTING BETTER
UE will be a force to reckon with next season.

OMETIMES, even if you give your all, thats just isnt enough. Unsuccessful in its attempt to land a spot in the top three, that is the lesson learned by the DLSU Animo Squad after finishing fifth out of the eight squads which strutted their stuff at the 2012 UAAP Cheerdance Competition.
With their finale danced in the tune of We Are The Champions, last years first runnerup failed in their bid to make their Season 74 silver a gold this time. As unpredictable as they were in that rainy Saturday afternoon, the outcome was a far cry from the bar set by their multi-titled coach Rhufa Rosario. We had minor mistakes, said Rosario, the coach of the six-time NCAA cheerdance champs Perpetual Altas Perpsquad. But for the cheerdancers, despite the results, they were satisfied with what they have done in the mat. I think we really did a good performance out there, said female captain Natasha Mendoza. We owned it. And they did. As promised, the gloves really did come off as the Taftbased cheerdancers showcased a boxing-themed performance. Wearing boxing gloves and championship belts, the Animo Squad danced like they were in a

tense round 12 of a closely contested boxing match. We did our best and were happy that we enjoyed it all throughout the routine, Mendoza added. Premium was put in the difficulty of the stunts they did, which is already an accomplishment for Rosario given the rookie-laden team that he had. All in all, that could be the greatest performance we can ever give to the crowd, Rosario said. As they say, its not all about what you can get in the competition, what matters is what you get from it. And that is what keeps the coach and the DLSU Animo Squad upbeat. With their rookies gaining significant experience from this years tiff, Rosario could only promise one thing. Well come back stronger next year.
WIN OR LOSE
Ateneans all the way.

HILE the Ateneo mens basketball team is on top of its game, the Blue Babble Batallion seemingly has to wait for another season with hopes high and all bets in for a podium finish.
Pulling through a Japanese anim-inspired theme and showcasing more difficult stunts and tosses than their last years routine, the Ateneo Blue Babble Batallion still wasnt able to place in the Top 3 even with Voltes V capping their performance. In 2009 though, Ateneo placed second to Far Eastern University with a Michael Jackson theme, the first time Ateneo landed a podium finish. Maybe the magic of Voltes V didnt work as much as the King of Pops as the Babble Batallion only landed on sixth place in the Season 75 UAAP Cheerdance Competition, one step higher from their seventh place finish in Season 74. According to co-captain Desiree Fadri, the team really prepared for this years cheerdance competition. Senior cheerleader Bea Crisologo also added that their Japanese anim themes routine was definitely more challenging than last years. But still, it wasnt enough. Maybe because the Blue Babble Batallion needed to change their routine one day before the competition due to an MCL injury obtained by one of their lifters, George Santos. Good thing their showmanship conquered all odds. The team coached by Randel San Gregorio and Ivan Claudio, still did their best like nothing happened and gave their everything for the Ateneo faithfuls. The Ateneo Blue Babble Batallion may have failed to bring home the bacon to Katipunan. But it does not matter. Because just like what the Ateneans often say, Win or lose, its the school we choose. At the end of the day, that is the true Ateneo way.
