TEACHING PLAN BREASTFEEDING AND INFANT NUTRITION

DESCRIPTION OF THE LEARNER: The learner for this teaching plan is a mother who had just given birth, and is ready for the role of breastfeeding and infant nutrition. She understands English and Filipino as mediums of communication, and is at proper age to easily grasp instructions. Nonetheless, she is eager to learn and possess the initiative to obtain the needed information, that is after the taking-in phase of childbirth. LEARNING NEED: Proper Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition LEARNING DIAGNOSIS: Knowledge deficit: proper breastfeeding and infant nutrition related to lack of adequate information. GOAL: To promote effective breastfeeding pattern and infant nutrition after discussing the different topics included with this teaching plan. Objectives: Within 30 minutes and upon completion of the topics on breastfeeding and infant nutrition, client will be able to: a. Mention at least 3 important points of breast feeding b. Demonstrate the proper positioning of infant during breastfeeding c. Identify 4 signs of good attachment and sucking d. Enumerate at least 7 advantages of breastfeeding e. Enumerate all 4 signs signifying that infant is hungry f. Identify at least 3 factors affecting infant nutrition g. Discuss at least 5 things to remember during the weaning process Contents Important aspects of breastfeeding: when to start how to start things to be done before breastfeeding Proper positioning of breastfeeding + helpful points or tips in breastfeeding. May also include signs of good attachment and sucking. Signs of good attachment: Timeframe 3 minutes Methodology One-on-one lecture or discussion

Feed in an upright position b. Rice cereal is recommended as the first solid feeding c. Introduce new food d. Let the baby determine how much he needs e. Rejected foods may be introduced in a later time f. Delay introducing eggs, milk, wheat and citrus if positive with family history of food allergy g. Give plain pure fruit juices h. Homemade baby food can be prepared by blending, mashing or grinding i. Do not give canned vegetables, baby carrot food, beets or spinach- high in nitrate content. To avoid choking, cook foods well and serve in small pieces; supervise meals; do not give foods he cannot chew. 5 minutes One-on-one discussion
