Determination of Stress Fringe Value - Tensile Loading

Determine the value of the stress-optic coefficient for the material provided using tensile loading tests. The general procedure is to apply increasing load and identify the fringe order and stress at specified fringe numbers. The Circular Polariscope configuration is used for determining the magnitude of principal stress difference. 1. Obtain data to determine the stress-optic coefficient using a Bright Field Circular Polariscope or Dark Field Circular Polariscope configuration

unclamp the D-M position handwheel rotate the handle to set the polarizer axis to vertical lock the handwheel set the handle to position "D"(irection) bright field is obtained when Polarizer and Analyzer are parallel o rotate the Analyzer while noting the output of the Polariscope o set Analyzer orientation for bright field - brightest field possible dark field is obtained when Polarizer and Analyzer are crossed o rotate the Analyzer, observe output and set for dark field (darkest possible) place the tensile specimen in the load frame balance and zero the load cell system o if necessary calibrate the load measurement system o initial setup has load factor of 1 lb / 2 , and this should be verified obtain data for increasing and decreasing load using a particular color fringe o record the loads for the first three fringe orders o it may take careful observation to see the first order fringe

Beam Model
Characterize the stress state in the beam model provided, in bright field or dark field configuration. 1. Determine the stress magnitude

set up the Polariscope for bright or dark field observation set the Polariscope configuration for use as a Circular Polariscope place the beam loading apparatus and specimen in the load frame apply loading and record the loads and photograph the specimen for the first four or five fringe orders

since stress varies in the beam several fringe orders may be visible at one load if sufficient information can be gained with a single load applied, this is sufficient

2. Determine the stress orientation

set the Polariscope configuration for use as a Plane Polariscope repeat the loading-data gathering process
