INVITATION
Dear colleagues Agricultural scenario is fast changing the world over. There is an urgent need to produce more food per unit area and time for feeding the ever increasing human population that has crossed 7.0 billion, with India alone contributing 1.2 billion. The challenge before agricultural scientists is to ensure required quantity as well as better quality food. Besides, agriculture is a leading economic sector in many nations, but it is facing many problems including stress on natural resources and its growth rate is declining. With the introduction of high yielding crop varieties, many traditional and local varieties were replaced. The on-farm narrow genetic base has further led to the emergence of new pests and diseases. Maintaining agricultural biodiversity is important for long-term food security. The challenge is further compounded with climate change, and agriculture will have to cope with increasing weather fluctuations. Moreover, there has been diversion of agricultural produce to the generation of bioenergy in recent years resulting in global increase in food prices, that has added a new dimension to the concern of food security. A significant change in the global food and agriculture system is needed, if we are to nourish burgeoning population. The regions practising input-intensive agriculture in Indo-Gangetic plains are facing serious challenges in sustaining agricultural growth. The Green Revolution in 1960's and 70's led to wide spread shifts in the cropping pattern and transformation of subsistence and low-input agriculture to mono-cropping with high inputs. High cropping intensity, over exploitation of water and soil resources, excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has led to depletion of ground water, deterioration of soil health, loss of biodiversity, environmental problems and dwindling economic returns to the farmers. This calls for designing new strategies, a paradigm shift, and holistic approach to sustain agricultural growth for achieving much needed food and nutritional security of the people and better livelihood of the farmers. The International Conference on 'Sustainable Agriculture for Food and Livelihood Security', is being organized from November 27-29, 2012 by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana during its Golden Jubilee year. It aims at sharing latest advances, knowledge and technologies regarding agricultural production and discuss options to deal with the challenges to stimulate collaborative research among institutions. There will be invited plenary lectures, poster and oral presentations, and panel discussion. The conference will focus on the theme areas: A. Breeding crops for food security and climate resilience, B. Natural resource conservation: A key to sustainable agriculture, C. Crop protection, D. Food processing and nutritional security, E. Advances in veterinary and animal sciences for sustainable livestock development, and F. Joining hands for economic development I cordially invite you to participate in this conference and look forward to welcome you at Ludhiana during November 27-29, 2012. Baldev S. Dhillon Chairman, National Organising Committee Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India
