Event Overview
Your school is invited to select two or more student leaders and one educator to participate in the 2012 NL Student Debate Seminar in St. Johns. Students in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to attend. The Seminar will be an opportunity for students and educators to learn about debate and public speaking from individuals that have been involved in the debating community for several decades. Furthermore, a main focus will be on developing leadership skills that students can bring back to their own schools and use in the implementation of bring running debate clubs. The Seminar will run from Thursday, October 25 until Sunday, October 28.

Improve public speaking, confidence, listening, and critical thinking skills. Further language arts and English learning objectives. Professional Development opportunity for educators. Become eligible to participate provincially, nationally, and internationally in major competitions.

Registration Details
Seminar Registration is now open! Please visit: www.nlsdu.ca to register both students and educators. Cost: $75.00 Registration Fee per student | Educators attend free free-of-charge Travel, accommodations, incidental costs, and meals while travelling to/from the Seminar are not included in to/from this Registration Fee. All meals while in attendance will be provided. Students and teachers may apply for a travel and accommodations rebate at the end of the Seminar. Please make all cheques and money orders paya payable to NL Speech & Debate Union. All fees and permission forms must be received by no later than Friday, October 12, 2012. CONSENT AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF RISK (One per student)
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY I, the parent or legal guardian of (name of student) would like to apply for the participation of my child in the 2012 NLSDU Debat &Leadership Seminar in St. Johns, NL (event) which takes place in the period Debate&Leadership of October 11-14, 2012 plus the associated travel days before and after those dates. I agree to the following: 1. I agree, for myself and on behalf of my child, to release MUN Oxfam, the Speech and Debate Union (SDU), its organizers, directors, employees, sponsors, officers, agents, volunteers and representatives (all of whom are referred to as the Releasees) icers, from, and agree not to sue these parties for, any liabilities, claims, injuries, losses, damages, expenses, demands, actions, and causes of action of any kind or nature whatsoever, whenever they occur, arising out of or at all related to my child's participation in the camp. I agree to be responsible for insuring myself and my child against the above named risks. I and my child also waiv any waive claims against the Releasees. I and my child agree to hold harmless and indemnify the Releasees from any and all claims for or eleasees. liability for property damage or personal injury to, or other claim of any third party related to my child's activity. 2. SDU reserves the right to refuse or cancel a registration for non payment of fees, deposits or final payments. use non-payment

3. I am satisfied that I have been provided with information about SDU, including the nature and extent of the risks and hazards , associated with the event. However I am in no way relying solely upon the information provided by SDU and will seek additional information as necessary. 4. I freely and voluntarily assume the risks and hazards inherent in the nature of the camp and understand and acknowledge that my child, as a participant, may suffer personal and potentially serious injury due to an unforeseeable or unexpected event. nt, 5. My child has been informed that he/she is to abide by SDUs policies and rules, including directions and instructions from s representatives of SDU, the Board of the SDU, and the designated chaperone and/or appointed event organizer. 6. I agree that my child will abide by Canadas, Newfoundland and Labradors, St. Johns, Memorial University of NLs laws and regulations and the reasonable directions of the SDU representative during the event. Failure to do so may result in SDU excluding presentative my child from the balance of the event. I understand that if my child disobeys such laws, rules or directions, I waive the r right to refund of any part of the registration fee and that SDU may send my child home at my expense. 7. If my child becomes ill or incapacitated, SDU may take any action it deems necessary for my childs safety and wellbeing, including securing medical treatment and transporting him/her home, all at my expense. I acknowledge that SDU has recommended that I obtain medical and trip cancellation insurance, unless covered by other medical insurance, to cover such expenses. 8. I understand that it is my responsibility to secure the necessary travel documents such as passport(s) or visa(s) or picture passport(s) identification. Failure to do so does not constitute grounds for a refund. 9. I understand that I will be required to pay for any phone calls, incidental personal expenses or damage to the property of others that is caused by my child. 10. I understand that my child and I are solely responsible for any illegal activities of my child such as theft, vandalism or an other any activities that are against the law of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador or St. Johns. My child shall not be us using or trafficking in any illegal substance or non-prescription drugs. prescription

11. I agree to pay or reimburse SDU for any expenses they incur as a result of the illegal activities of my child, which may affect his/her participation in the event. 12. I acknowledge that it is my responsibility to advise SDU of any medical or health concerns as well as dietary restrictions of my child, which may affect his/her participation in the camp. 13. I consent that SDU, through its employees, agents, and officers may get such medical advi , advice and services as those individuals, in their sole discretion, may deem necessary for my childs health and safety, and that I shall be responsible f the cost for of such advice and services. 14. I agree that this Consent and Acknowledgement of Risk shall be effective and binding upon the heirs, next-of-kin, executors, effective next administrators, and assigns of me and my child. 15. I agree to permit video and photographic records of my childs participation in this activity to be taken and used for any purpose. 16. I agree that in the camp based upon the terms described herein. I agree that this Consent and Acknowledgement of Risk is to be governed and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and that any actions, suits or claims will be brought in the courts in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, to which I attorn. 18. I ACKNOWLEDGE that I have read this Consent and Acknowledgement of Risk in its entirety, that I understand an agree to and be bound by its terms, and that I am signing it voluntarily, without duress or undue influence from anyone.
