The concept of sustainable development can be traced to the fossil fuel crisis and the environment pollution concern in the 1970s. Green Building and Architecture movement originated from the need and desire for more energy efficient and environment friendly construction practices. The term GREEN ARCHITECTURE has evolved into practice sometime during the last four decades; it embodies the philosophy, principles and practices of designing human habitats that are sensitive to the environment and in harmony with nature. Dedicated to reducing, and ultimately eliminating, the negative impacts of buildings on the environment and human health, the practice of GREEN ARCHITECTURE, with a vast array of techniques, technology and skills, is spreading very rapidly across the globe. The design exercises employed or engaged in the quest for GREEN ARCHITECTURE are constantly evolving and may differ from one place to the other, depending on the geographic location and climate, availability of material, economy, local building codes and importantly, on the culture and heritage of the people and habitat. The invited speakers in the Seminar would present the relevant issues of GREEN ARCHITECTURE in the light of their understanding of the subject and their practice, pedagogy and philosophy. The participants in the Seminar would have an opportunity of sharing their views during the open discussion sessions. It is expected that the Seminar would make a significant contribution towards promoting appropriate GREEN ARCHITECTURE in Bangladesh and other countries in the region in order to ensure a Green Habitat for this Blue Planet.
