English Language for Senior Secondary School (Sekolah Menengah Atas/SMA)/Islamic Senior Secondary School (Madrasah Aliyah/MA) Background Language has a central role in developing learners intellectual, social and emotional and as a supporting factor in learning all subjects. Language teachinglearning is expected to assist learners in identifying themselves, their culture and others. Beside that, language teaching-learning can assist learners to be able to express opinions and feelings, participate in the society and find as well as use the analytical and imaginative skills within themselves. English language is a means of spoken and written communication.
Communicating refers to understanding and expressing information, thoughts and feelings and developing knowledge, technology and culture. Communication skills, in a whole meaning, is understanding and/or producing spoken and/or written texts which are realized in four language skills: listening, speaking reading and writing. These four language skills are used to respond and create discourse in communal life. Therefore, English is directed to develop these language skills so that graduates will be able to communicate and work with English discourses at certain literacy level. Literacy level involves performative, functional, informational, and epistemic. On the performative level, people are able to read, write, listen and speak using the shared symbols. On the functional level, people are able to use language in meeting his or her daily needs such as reading newspaper or manuals. On the informational level, one is able to access knowledge with his or her language competency, meanwhile on the epistemic level, people are able to express knowledge into the target language (Wells, 1987). The teaching-learning of English in Junior Secondary School/Islamic Junior Secondary School aims at assisting learners to achieve the functional level; that is to communicate both spoken and written to accomplish their daily needs, whereas learners in Senior Secondary School/Islamic Senior Secondary School are expected to achieve the informational level since they are being prepared to
