Learning Outcomes At the end of this subject, the students should be able to:

1.

explain the electromagnetic phenomena in transmission lines, wave guides, electromagnetic compatibility and electrostatic discharge. 2. display the capability to provide solutions to problems related to EMC and ESD. 3. formulate and apply appropriate equations to solve problems in relations to transmission lines and waveguides 4. evaluate the principles and concepts on EMC and ESD with regards to engineering design. 5. report and explain their assignments clearly

Synopsis This course will discuss on: Transmission Lines: Line Parameters and Equations; Input Impedance, SWR, Power, Smith Chart, Matching and Impedance Measurements, Transient. Waveguides: TM and TE Modes, Wave Propagation, Power Transmission and attenuation, Waveguide current and Mode Excitation, Resonators. Electromagnetic Compatibility: EMC requirements for Electronic System, Emission and Susceptibility, Cross talk, Shielding, System Design, Grounding and Shielding, EMI diagnostic, EMC specifications, standard and measurements. Electrostatic Discharge: ESD Event, ESD effects in Electronic Equipment, ESD Facilities and Test Methods. 3.0 Pre-requisite Nil

Practical Application At the end of the semester, the students will be required to give an oral presentation on their assignment based on advanced electromagnetic applications.
