ery little is actaully known about Samuel Alva Crandall. His wife, Adah Goodrichs side of the family
tree continues further back. But Samuel Alva seems to be last Crandall descendent in our line of whom we are sure. We dont know for certainty who his parents were. Samuel Alva Crandall was born in in New York on May 7, 1802. He married Ada Goodrich in 1822 in New Berlin. They were both of English descent. He was a farmer described as of medium height, medium- light complected [and having] a roving disposition. The following is how his roaming disposition manifested itself. From New York, the Crandalls moved to Pennsyvania and lived near Smethport. Then they moved to Richland City, Wisconsin. It seems they also lived in Kansas for brief time. They then moved to Clay Township, Jones County in Iowa. Finally they settled in Sioux County, Iowa and were among the first settlers there. Samuel died of tuberculosis (consumption as it was called) at age 78 on June 24, 1880 in Settlers Township, Sioux County, Iowa. The Crandalls had nine children. one of them was Tyrannus Holden Crandall, my great great grandfather. Samuel Alva Crandalls headstone

We have no confirmed photos of Tyrannus Holden Crandall. Some suspect this might be him.

hen Julius Crandall was 20 years old he and his father Tyrannus went out for a load of hay in their horse cart. When they stopped Tyrannus went to the back of the cart to start loading. Suddenly, Julius started up the team of horses to get at some hay that the
cart was on top of. Unfortunately he neglected to let his father know he was moving. Tyrannus fell headfirst onto the ground. Little over a week later, Tyrannus died. It is very likely that Julius fathers untimely death and Julius partial responsibility for it affected him for much of his life. Julius mother, who had already had two of her children die of diptheria, took her husbands death stoicly. She even said that she had a premonition of it and upon hearing of the accident told Julius that Tyrannus would not recover. It is said that Julius inherited much of his fathers pioneering spirit. Julius had considered being a doctor. According to his brother Earl, he seemed to have a natural bedside manner. He was kind to the poor, sympathetic to the depressed and very good at taking care of the sick. It is likely he wouldve gone into the medical profession were it not for his fathers untimely death and the changes that followed. Julius ultimately became a realtor. In his business and personal dealings he was admired as a man of honesty, integrity and kindness. He was also seen as a man of great drive and energy. So it was especially difficult for his family to see him as he became ill and frail at the end of his life. Julius died on June 2, 1944 in Glendale, California of atherosclerosis.

In 1918 during World War I Glenn enlisted in the US Army. He was in the 144th Field Artilery, Battery B - The California Grizzlies. The Grizzlies were sent as replacements for those fighting in France. In France Glenn met a fellow soldier named Bob Cochran. They were both young and impressionable. Glenn was 19. Bob had faked his age and was actually 17. Neither Glenn nor Bob ever made it to the front. In fact just when they were to be sent to the front, the war ended. But perhaps just the experience of waiting to go to front lines -with the possibiltiy of serious injury or death - was enough to allow a significant friendship and lifelong bond to form between these two young men. Whatever the case, they grew close enough that they both made a promise to each other. Glenn and Bob pledged that they would name their first-born child after each other. In the years that followed, Glenn and Bob wrote each other about their lives and families. They both kept their pact. My father is named Bob and Bob Cochran named his son Glenn. Sometimes a few years went by without correspondence. But eventually they managed to keep in touch and recall with fondness those formative times in Europe in 1918. This is a photo of Bob Cochran in uniform in 1918. Unfortunately a photo of Glenn Crandall and Bob Cochran together could not be found.

Canada again, Clarence noticed that several of his fathers pigs had hernias. So
one day with the assistance of his brother adminstering the anesthetic, Clarence attempted to perform a hernia operation on one the pigs. Though Clarence didnt know it at the time, a pig cannot survive for long lying on its back. It was said that when Clarence came out of the barn he pronounced, The operation was a success...But the patient died. Eventually Clarence did become a doctor. He married his wife Cora with whom he went to China as a missionary for 13 years. When he returned the United States he went to the Ganado Mission at the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. For
larence Salsburys first foray into medicine began when he was a young man in Canada. He had had several first aid courses at the Union Missionary Training Institue in Brooklyn. When he was back home in
23 years Clarence headed the Sage Memorail Hospital where he established the first school of nursing for Native Americans. After that he worked as the Arizona State Health Commissioner until 1961.

lenn and Dorothy Crandall bought their first home in 1933 after six years of marriage. The home was $1250 and they didnt even have enough money for the down payment of $500. But they got a loan and bought the house. They fixed it up and sold it for $2700. They then bought a foreclosure house for $4000. They fixed it up, sold it and got $6700 for it. They continued this practice of buying, fixing up and selling homes right up into their 80s. By the time the 1980s rolled around they had bought, fixed up and sold a total of 34 homes. Some of these homes are now (as of this writing in 2011) valued between 2 million and 3 million dollars. Dorothy was the driving force behind this serial flipping of homes over the years. Glenn went along for the ride and did much of hard work using his handyman skills to fix up these old places. But he most likely wouldve been content living and staying in one home for good. The following images are mostly current photos of just a few of the houses Glenn and Dorothy lived in. They are displayed in what I believe to be chronological order.
2454 Prince, Berkeley : This was actually the Salsbury family home but it seems Glenn and Dorothy lived here briefly when they first got married.
- 86 -
445 - 66th Street, Oakland: This was the house in which David was born in 1940. The family lived here from 1936-1942
2727 Russell St., Berkeley : The family lived here from 1943 to 1945. Julius (Glenns father) stayed with the family and died while they lived here.
- 87 -
2840 Claremont Ave., Berkeley: (aka Claremont Hotel Junior ) The family lived here from 1947-1948. Glenn and Dorothy bought this house for about $27,000. They sold it after remodeling for about $48,000. Bob graduated from Berkeley High School when they lived here. Dorothys father Esley stayed and died here.
47 Farragut, Piedmont: The Crandalls lived here from the late 1940s through the late 1950s. They took in elderly renters in order to pay the rent.
- 88 -
- 89 -
- 90 -
395 Hampton Road, Piedmont: The Cavalier house. This house had a library with lots of secret panels. It had quarters for the hired help (of which Glenn and Dorothy had none.) It was the one house I remember to be most like a house youd see in a British murder mystery. A rainy night made it paricularly creepy.

- 91 -
75 Glen Alpine, Piedmont: Glenn and Dorothy lived here from about 1972 to 1975: Dorothy referred to it as the French Chateau. The interior was decorated in a French baroque period style. There was an elevator and a theater in the basement.
