Effective Teaching using MxLA based Conceptual e-contents

A new approach for effective utilization of Mission10x e-contents Introduction In the University based engineering education system, a candidate needs to complete a wide range of courses in four year span. Each course is composed of several units. Each unit is the composite of related concepts.

A faculty is supposed to teach all the concepts in any pattern that suits to both themselves and their students need. The session wise coverage will always differ across persons universities. The hand-outs and the depth of the coverage is always an unanswered question for academic teachers. Current format of MxLA Contents The Mission 10x contents available now, are prepared for an entire 50/60minutes session. This may or may not be applicable for every individual faculty and all universities. All contents have been prepared in accordance to what the individual has taught. Thus, the usage of these contents is restricted to only a small group of people. The innovative and experimented method of teaching quoted by a faculty may not match to all kinds of students too. Proposed changes in the content creation In the proposed method of content development, the faculties will conceive innovative techniques, test and develop a FRG for a collection of concepts, as per their university syllabus and target audience. The structure of FRG adopted now for a session plan, can be used for preparing the FRG for each topics. Expected utilization of modified MxLA Contents

A new approach for effective utilization of Mission10x e-contents Once submitted for certification, Mission 10x team will scrutinize the same and upload it over the portal. A faculty from any other college/university, who wishes to use the same for their course can simply map them and form a full session plan according to their need. Thus the usages of MxLA based contents can be used by many faculties, top enhance the engineering education. Sample scenario: Mr. G Raghu, Assistant Professor-CSE of XYZ College of Engineering, Chennai is teaching DIGITAL PRINCIPLES for 3rd Semester CSE students, as per Anna University syllabus. He identifies and maps the various concepts involved in the syllabus, as shown below.

Action Plan of Mr.G.Raghu: 1. Conceive innovative teaching methods for various concepts that are most important for achieving the learning outcomes. Also, the same has been felt as difficult and needs more interaction from learners. 2. Prepare plans of teaching the concepts (say around 150+) and communicates them to Mission 10x team 3. Based on the feedback from Mission 10x, he modifies few and re-innovate some teaching techniques for few concepts. 4. On finalization, he facilitates the students using the plan.

A new approach for effective utilization of Mission10x e-contents 5. Formative Assessment of students is conducted to know the feedback of his techniques and the report shared with Mission 10x team 6. The summative Assessment (i.e. Term End Examination) will show the effectiveness of Raghus efforts. 7. All the contents created by Ragu will be the asset for being shared by all in Mission 10x portal Scenario of effective utilization by another faculty: Ms. Yamuna, Lecturer-ECE, ARC College of Technology-Jaipur affiliated to Rajasthan Technical University needs some methods to handle a course on DIGITAL PRINCIPLES for 3rd Semester ECE students. Being an MxLA certified faculty, she searches for contents in our Portal. According to her concept mapping, her course contains about 140+ concepts. She explores that about 128 concepts prepared by Mr. Raghus are common to her course. She plans to utilize them and prepares contents for the about 20 concepts. She even invents some additional techniques for few concepts of Mr. Raghus creation. On successful testing, her creation too becomes the asset of Mission 10x. Thus contents created by many faculties can be effectively used by all faculties across the globe. Challenges and proposed solution: The main challenge in this method is to teach Concept mapping to the faculties. The IHMC CmapTools (Open Source tool available at www.cmap.ihmc.us/download) empowers users to construct, navigate, share and criticize knowledge models represented as concept maps. We can have a session to train the faculties on this tool, in the 5th day of Workshop or 1st day of the Advanced Workshop.
