Separate Your Lab Mixture Date: 9/12/12 Name: Jake Gustafson Group Members: Max, Nithin, Brawley, and

Ryan Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to separate sand, salt, pebbles, and iron fi lings. During this we are suppose to learn how to write a procedure and learn ho w to separate using physical properties. Procedure: Put on safety goggles and make sure you are wearing closed toed shoes Tare a weighing boat Pour mixture from small beaker into the weighing boat Record the weight of the mixture Then while keeping the magnet in the Ziploc bag, hold the magnet over th e mixture to attract the iron filings Tare a weighing boat and then take the bag with the iron filings still attached and put it over the weighing boat Then put your hand in the bag and pull out the magnet so the iron filing s fall into the weighing boat Then pour those filings out of the weighing boat and onto a sheet of pap er and repeat steps 5-7 to try and get rid of any sand After you think you have gotten all the sand out, weigh the iron filings and record their weight Give the Iron filings to your instructor Then use tweezers to take out all of the pebbles from the mixture Then tare a weighing boat and weight the pebbles Record the pebbles weight and then give them to your instructor Then set up a ring stand and a ring clip to set a funnel in. Make sure t he bottom of the funnel is part way in the beaker you are going to use Then get a piece of filter paper and fold it in half without creasing th e center too tightly Fold paper in half again but do not fold it all the way lined up, leavin g about a half centimeter difference Place the filter paper into the funnel and wet the paper so it stays dow n Then pour the salt and sand mixture into a large beaker Pour water into that mixture and stir it up Then start to pour the mixture into the funnel. Do not let it overflow a nd as it goes down continue to fill it until all of your mixture is in the funne l The salt will go with the water into the beaker and the sand will stay i n the filler paper Let the sand dry and then tare a weighing boat and pour the sand in it Record the weight of the sand and give the sand to your instructor Then take the beaker with the salt and water mixture and place it on a h ot plate to make the water evaporate Data Table/Results Table: Total Mass of the Mixture 72.25g Mass After Separating Percent Composition Pebbles 7.45g 7.45g/72.25g*100=10.311% Iron Fillings 2.84g 2.84g/72.25g*100=3.9308% Salt /72.25g*100= Sand /72.25g*100= Total Mass Recovered After Separation Conclusion: Answer
