By Lanny Dragon Just a couple of weeks ago The Digger celebrated its 35th anniversary. On September 1st I will have been with Great Adventures Publishing, Inc. (GAPI) for 8 years. September in 2004 does not seem that long ago until I consider the experiences I have had in this new vocation, the friends I have made and the changes I have seen in Oroville and Greater Butte County. I have traveled and shared those stories with our readers. I collaborated with Jacques Pitet to create our Food Fun series. I had many opportunities to write articles on Christmas; the Berry Creek Berry Festival; and special holidays, events and persons of interest I have gotten to know.

In short, it has been a heck of a ride! Now it is time to close the book and bid farewell as Judy and I prepare for our next adventure our relocation to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to avail ourselves of our sons generous offer to let him take care of us for the next 40 years as we took care of him for the first 40! Judy and I will miss our friends and neighbors, the beauty of Berry Creek and the home where we have lived longer than any other place in our 70+ years. The fall semester brings new leadership to the campuss center for lifelong learners as Ann Nikolai is named the new Program Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSU, Chico. Ann replaces Linda MacMichael who is retiring after eight years of service with the organization. Ann Nikolai comes to CSU, Chico from the Bay Area, where she led a grant-based initiative to improve student transfer rates among underserved populations. Ann has also worked for more than 15 years in public relations and marketing and is a twotime recipient of the National Council for Public Relations and Marketing (NCMPR) Gold Paragon Award for Community Relations Projects. Ann has a wealth of diverse experiences serving students from non-traditional backgrounds, states Debra Barger, Dean of Regional and Continuing Education. I am confident Ann will provide excellent leadership for OLLI in its continuing service to the North Valley region. As the OLLI Director, Ann will be responsible for overseeing program administration and supporting the nearly 800 member volunteers in expanding learning opportunities in the classroom, in the field, and in the community at large. Additionally, and in cooperation with Regional and Continuing Education, she will be responsible for generating new partnerships to increase intergenerational involvement on campus. Ann has also served as Director of Communications for Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and as a research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania, where she completed her undergraduate degree. OLLI at CSU, Chico is an educational program for lifelong learners aged 55+ who are eager to explore traditional and new areas of knowledge without exams or grades. Distinguished Chico State faculty, community leaders, and hobbyists share their expertise with members whose life experience and intelligence enrich the exchange of ideas. OLLI is committed to the concept that older adults learn best when they are active in their own learning process. Using the method of peer learning, members are enthusiastically engaged in proposing topics, facilitating study groups as peer leaders, volunteering to be weekly discussion leaders, and serving on committees. Registration for fall classes in the Chico area opened earlier this month. Classes started September 4. The annual membership fee for OLLI is $75 and includes fall and spring courses, a University library courtesy card, newsletters, and general meetings. Butte Environmental Council (BEC) is excited to announce that we have a new video public service announcement currently airing on local television stations. This video educates viewers about the toxic chemicals that can be found in many every day personal care products. This PSA is the latest addition to three video PSAs that BEC has created under a multiyear grant from The California Wellness Foundation to educate Butte County residents about toxic chemicals that are used every day; including common household cleaning products, pesticide and herbicide products, and now personal care products. BEC invited Butte County high school students or clubs to participate in this project to promote alternatives to toxics last February. After reviewing the submissions, the staff at BEC chose the Oroville High School video for its creative, teen-centric message about toxic chemicals in some cosmetics and personal care products. BEC awarded the Oroville students $250 for first prize as well as the chance to have their amateur video produced professionally by Brian Peterson of Peterson Pro Video. The students not only learned about the prevalence of toxic chemicals in cosmetics through

their research for the video, but got to learn about the ins and outs of creating a professional video. The students submitted the video as an Outreach Club project with guidance and support from Julie McCullogh, OHS Outreach Coordinator, who said, T h e experience (both in front of and behind the camera) and enjoyment that our students got working with BEC and Brian Peterson is something that will stay with them for years. Not only were they able to learn valuable information that many of them didnt know, but they also get to be a part of spreading that important information to the public. The high school students who developed the draft video got the opportunity to participate in creating a professional video from the script to the final video. With just a little guidance and the right equipment, the students worked together very well as a team writing the storyboard and script, serving as actors and even editing the final version, says Peterson, who has created all four video PSAs for BEC. The 30-second video PSA is called Toxic Beauty and will be airing on local television stations in August and September of this year. Wow, my mom has suitcases on the bed in the guest room again! They have been there for a month now. Do not see any of my stuff there. Hmmmm, what is going on? Every day, Mom puts stuff on the bed or in the suitcase. I have been checking them out. In fact last week I hid my Humpy in one of them. Mom was not pleased! It had sand all over it and she had to take it out, take the stuff out of the suitcase, vacuum the suitcase and repack it. Ok, so I goofed! Wrong place to put Humpy. Anyway Ill put it somewhere else next time. The went out to dinner the other night, and left me home alone for the third time that day! Boy, I xed them, I buried both my Bumble Bee and my Humpy in the yard! Bumble Bee was in the sprinkler hole near the corner of Mark and Paulettes house, a new place, and Humpy in the usual place by the corner of the bedroom. Well, the sprinklers came on while they were gone. I didnt care. I just left them there. Wow, Mom came home and immediately noticed that they were not in my basket. She took the searchlight and went out into the yard looking for them. Good thing I hid under the bed. I have a sixth sense about when Mom goes out in the night with that light. I know what she is doing and what she will tell me when she comes back in. I dont need to hear it for the umpteenth time! After all, it gets redundant after awhile. So I just stayed under the bed until she calmed down! When she put Humpy and Bumble Bee in the washer that night, I knew I was in trouble. But when they came out, they were all nice and clean and Humpy squeaks again! He stopped doing it for awhile cause he kept getting wet. But now he works again. Wow! Well, now I have a bag packed, too. Good, I thought they were leaving me home alone. Boy, could I have a fun time. I have about a zillion toys so I could put them all over the yard. Ha! I could really have fun. But, my bag is starting to look like I am going somewhere. Hmmm, I hope it is with them, but maybe not Again they went out to dinner tonight. Doesnt she ever cook? I like leftovers, but I only get dog food when they go out. But tonight I buried Humpy between the pillows on the bed in the guest room. No room in the suitcases, they are full of stuff! We must be getting close to leaving. Oh boy, she found Humpygood thing he was nice and clean. Havent put him outside since he was washed. Hid him the other day in their closet, and Dad found him! But he doesnt say anything to Mom. He is cool; he protects me. Oh my gosh, its 4 a.m. and I am being put into Kathi and Alexs car. Mom and Dad have their suitcases, and off we go! I just got home; I can go back to sleep when they are gone. After all, I dont get up until 7 or so, and its still dark outside! Dont know where they went, but I sure am gonna miss them.
