Chyna Shiver Text Set 09/10/12 For my text set I used multiple places to find my books.

First I used books that I had used in previous ELEM courses here at ECU. This opened up a world that I had yet to explore outside of the classroom. I hadnt realized how well my teachers had set me up with a vast knowledge of childrens books. I also went to Barnes and Noble to see what other books I could find around my original book: Freedom on the Menu: The Greensboro Sit-ins. My first stop was of course the picture book area. From this area I found two fiction books. Next I moved on to a book my teacher introduced us to in class, which is a childrens memoir about Dr. Martin Luther King. Last I used two non-fiction books about strong women in the Civil Rights movement. The one thing all of my books have in common is the Civil Rights movement, but they arent the typical books. I wanted the students to see the civil rights movement from many angles not just the political side or the one that is always told through the I Have a Dream speech. Although these are need sides there are many stories that tell what happened just as well.

1. Woodson, Jacqueline, and Earl B. Lewis. The Other Side. New York: Putnam's, 2001. Print. Summary: Clover lives on the African American side of town and she doesnt understand why her mother tells her she must stay on this side of the fence. Clover strikes up a friendship with a girl named Anna from the white side of town. The two girls dont understand why they cant cross the fence so instead there friendship grows while the sit on top of the fence. Grade Level: Third/Fourth

Chyna Shiver Text Set 09/10/12 2. Pinkney, Andrea Davis., J. Brian. Pinkney, Liz Casal, and Patti Ann. Harris. Sit-in: How Four Friends Stood up by Sitting down. New York: Little, Brown, 2010. Print. Summary: This book is about four-friends who wanted to change the way things were. Their order was simple. A doughnut and coffee with cream on the side The book talks about 4 college students from A&T College in Greensboro, North Carolina who started a peaceful protest that would spread across the south and become a defining moment in the Civil rights movement. Grade Level: Second

3. McDonough, Yona Zeldis. Who Was Rosa Parks? New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 2010. Print. Summary: This is a biography about Rosa Parks. In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white patron on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This book details her life and her significance in the Civil Rights movement. Grade Level: First-Sixth

4. Farris, Christine King, and Chris K. Soentpiet. My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers Growing up with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. New York: Simon & Schuster for Young Readers, 2003. Print Summary: This is the story of Martin Luther King told through a different set of eyes. This is a memoir told through the eyes of Christine King Farris his older sister. Christine remembers her younger brother and the experience that would inspire him to change the world, as she knew it. Grade Level: Second Grade

5. Bridges, Ruby. Through My Eyes. New York: Scholastic, 1999. Print. Summary: The whole world watched as a 6-year-old Ruby Bridges would walk through a crowd of segregationists into what was an all white school. Ruby Bridges tells her own story in this book and what it felt like to take those steps and change history. Grade Level: Fourth and Fifth
