CCOU 504: The Helpers Chair: Special Skills and Practice Dr. Diane Langberg
Course Description: Do you have preconceived ideas of what a counselor is and does? Perhaps you are like Dr. Langberg was in her very first counseling session, surprised when things didnt go the way she perceived them beforehand. This lesson will expose the uniqueness of a helping ministry and outline the best skills and the right attitude to take into the counseling session. Learning Objectives: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to 1. Understand what helping involves. 2. Understand how to approach people in crisis. 3. Learn the three lessons that will yield staying power.
Introduction: This lesson will acquaint the student with some issues that are encountered when ministering to those who are suffering. The characteristics of a helping ministry and those of people in crisis will be considered. How to approach such a ministry so as to have staying power and not hurt or be hurt will close out the presentation.
