"Helmsman, you are making a mistake." Captain Kang growled as he watched the Helmsman continue to push the self-destruct initiation sequence code. "Am I Captain?" the Helmsman snarled back, "General Kolith had me memorize a special one man self-destruct sequence when you assigned me to Raptor. He was right not to trust you."

It was Spock who heard the noise first. Then Spock saw the Helmsman and pointed him out to the Klingon Captain. The Captain nodded and whispered to his two Security men who immediately moved around to the other side of the room from where the Helmsman was. The Helmsman was trying to protect himself with a disrupter in one hand. With his other hand he was pushing a series of commands into the console at which he was standing. He was desperately trying to remember the sequence General Kolith had drilled into him when the General had first told him of his mission. At the time, the Helmsman could not imagine any reason he would need to disable the matter-antimatter shielding. Now he was doing it and he knew the result would be his death. The destruction of Raptor, and annihilation of quite a bit of whatever was in space around it, would also occur. Including Enterprise he hoped. Just a few more sequences he thought, just a few, and nothing will stop it. "Helmsman," his Captain called out, "I'm going to step out into your view." Kang then stepped openly out to about ten feet away from the Helmsman. He said quietly, "Helmsman, explain." "What do you think Captain?" the Helmsman growled back. "Tell me Helmsman," Kang snapped out. "I am removing the matter-antimatter shielding." Despite the politeness of the words, and the

softness of the Helmsman's voice, his insolence was obvious. Kang felt infuriated as he didn't know how the Helmsman was removing the shielding. Kang knew it took a minimum of three men with the proper initiation sequence knowledge, working simultaneously, to set off the self-destruct sequence. When Spock heard the Helmsman's last answer, he pulled his communicator out from under his tunic where he had kept it hid, and flipped it open. "Spock to Captain Kirk," Spock said quietly into his communicator. Immediately Kirk's voice responded, "Kirk here Mister Spock." "Captain," Spock continued quietly, "urgently recommend all Enterprise personnel except me beamed aboard immediately and Enterprise prepare for an emergency warp," Spock said. He waited patiently while he listened to Kirk give the orders to retrieve Enterprise's Security Officers scattered about Raptor. Then Kirk was back to him. "What is it Spock?" "They have taken over Raptor's Engine Room, and disabled the conn by his Helmsman, who is now removing the matter-antimatter shielding. Captain Kang is attempting to stop him. The Helmsman is apparently using a self-destruct sequence initiation code unknown to Captain Kang though." "Understood," Kirk replied, "estimated time until we beam you aboard Mister Spock?" "Unknown, recommend you leave now." "Negative Spock," Kirk replied sharply. He was right not to trust you." Captain Kang then saw his Security Officers from behind the Helmsman. The Helmsman looked down at his console. Kang slowly nodded his head at the Security Officers, who immediately fired upon the Helmsman, who collapsed silently to the deck. Kang and Spock hurried over to the console. A glance told Kang they were too late, the five minute countdown had begun. He keyed the comm. "Captain to Bridge," Kang said. "Bridge here Captain," his Communication's Officer responded immediately.

"The Helmsman has initiated the self-destruct sequence. Apparently General Kolith gave him a special one man code. Start stop sequence immediately using the First Officer, the Navigator and the Science Officer." Kang mentally reviewed who was on the Bridge who could stop the selfdestruct sequence. "Then notify the remaining Klingon ships in the vicinity so they can save themselves if we are not successful." "Yes Captain." On board Enterprise, Uhura translated the Klingon signal from Raptor to the remaining Klingon ships. "Captain," she said, "We show Raptor's self-destruct sequence activated. He has just signaled the remaining Klingon ships to vacate the area." Kirk hit his comm in the arm of his command chair. "Kirk to Spock!" "Spock here Captain." "Explain situation Spock!" "Raptor's self-destruct sequence has been successfully initiated. Captain Kang has ordered the stop sequence initiated, which they are attempting now. We have four minutes twelve seconds until detonation. Again recommend Enterprise immediately remove herself from the area." "Captain," Uhura interrupted, "Kumara's First Officer is rejecting Raptor's message. He thinks it's a trick. He has ordered the Klingon fleet to form up for another attack." "Spock, is the stop order working?" "Not yet Captain. We now have three minutes twenty-two seconds until detonation." "Kirk to Scott. Report," Kirk ordered calmly, inwardly he was thinking furiously. "Scott here, We just brought the last Security Officer on board through the cargo transporter. I'm still standing by at the Main Transporter for Mister Spock." "Scotty, lock on now to Mister Spock and prepare to beam him aboard on my order. The second he's aboard, emergency warp us out of here." "Aye sir," Scott replied. "Mister Chekov, is our course still locked in?" "Affirmative sir." "Mister Sulu, prepare for an emergency warp on my signal. Uhura, open me up a ship wide

channel." "Open sir." "This is the Captain. In approximately two minutes, we will be using an emergency warp. Yellow Alert," Kirk explained, then turned to Uhura. "Close ship wide channels, open a channel to Kumara's ship." It was only a few seconds until Kumara's First Officer's face appeared on Enterprise's forward screen. "You've gotten soft Kirk," the Klingon silkily said, "you use to do better than a childlike bluff." "It's no bluff." Jim said as he motioned Uhura to cut the contact. Jim was worried, obviously this man had not risen to the rank of Kumara's First Officer without Kumara instilling much of himself in his First Officer. Kirk turned back to Uhura. "Uhura, open ship-to-ship with Mister Spock." "Spock here." "Spock, is the stop order working?" "Negative Captain, Captain Kang says his stop order might not be effective against the special initiation order the Helmsman used. The Captain is attempting to get the correct stop order out of the Helmsman now. We now have two minutes zero-nine seconds until detonation." The seconds ticked. No sound came from the open line with Spock. Suddenly Kirk could hear the Klingon Captain swear in the background. "What is it Spock?!" "Apparently the Helmsman has just committed suicide." The Klingon Captain's voice interrupted Spock. "Captain Kirk, my officers on board Enterprise are good men. Do not send them back to the Empire, let the Emperor think we all died." "I'll do my best Captain." Kirk told him evenly, but Kang interrupted him. "They are my sons' Kirk!" Kirk looked briefly at the comm, silently weighing his options. "I understand Kang," Kirk said gently and honestly, "What about you and your wife Captain?" he then asked hurriedly. "No Kirk, beam your First Officer over now!" Kirk then keyed his comm and yelled, "Scotty, energize now!" A moment later the ship sprang into an emergency warp. In front of them the dark of space lit up into a huge ball of light. It slowly dwindled in size as they retreated from the

explosions of Raptor's engines and the other Klingon ships. One minute later the Bridge elevator doors opened and Spock rushed over to his Science Station. "Mister Sulu, reduce speed to Warp Three. Welcome back Mister Spock," Kirk said. "Thank you," Spock replied as he looked up from his Science hood, "It is unfortunate this space lane will be unusable for the next fifty-seven point two nine years." Kirk looked at him, and Spock explained. "It is the combined force of Raptor's destruction with those of the Klingon fleet who chose not to heed Kang's warning. The explosion of their antimatter drives combined with photon torpedoes and plasma devices' Captain. It will be three point three one years before even a subspace signal can penetrate that region." The bridge personnel adsorbed Spock's words in shocked silence. "Mister Chekov, lay in a course for the other ships approaching." Kirk ordered. "Uhura, notify Starfleet Command of the destruction of Raptor and the other Klingon ships and the now closed space lane. Mister Sulu, warp six. We have some business with some Klingon ships on the wrong side of the Neutral Zone!" Admiral Kirk stood up, stretched, walked over to his desk where he sat at the chair there, and turned his recorder on. It was now morning as Kirk and Teed were again in Kirk's San Francisco flat. "Personal Log: Star Date 7065.5," said Kirk. Teed watched Kirk as he paused to settle back into his chair. Kirk then continued speaking. "The United Starship Enterprise NCC-1701, was envisioned principally as a scientific research vessel. She has also carried out military duties. They built her in space at the San Francisco Navy Yards." As he spoke, Kirk was still thinking of the tour on Hood. "During our missions, Enterprise conveyed more than four hundred of us throughout the galaxy. We had just completed our mission to Akkalla, and the crew of Enterprise was due for some much needed shore leave, when the Raptor incident occurred." Here Kirk paused, then continued. "We were able successfully to resolve it, and I will start my new job teaching at Starfleet Academy next month." Kirk stopped talking, and he and Teed were each lost in their own thoughts. "No matter now." Kirk then said as he turned the recorder off. He turned to Teed and grinned. "Teed, I'm hungry. Let's get cleaned up, eat, and see Spock." "Aye," Teed replied. Soon they each were in fresh uniforms. The servitor delivered breakfast, and for a moment, while finishing their coffee, they stood silently together in the morning light, watching the sun rise over the Bay. Teed put his coffee cup down.

"I'm ready Jim, how about you?" he asked gently. Kirk put his cup down, and flicked his communicator open. "Kirk to Enterprise, two to beam up." "Teed," Kirk said quietly as they took form on board Enterprise, "as the years went by, I've been thankful for the involved work Starfleet has demanded. It was the only way I learned to leave Ruth out of my mind. This going back to teach at the Academy is filling me with memories." Before Teed could answer, the transporter room door opened and Commander Montgomery Scott walked in. "Scotty!" Admiral James T. Kirk, the commander of Starfleet's flagship, Enterprise, called out happily. Cadet Kirk had gone on to become Captain of Enterprise, and it was she who had been forever after the focus of his heart. Kirk laughed and said, "of course you're not on shore leave." "Aye sir," Scotty replied proudly, "I requested this honor of escorting ye around myself." "Where's Spock?" Kirk asked, "I assume he also decided to forgo shore leave.". "He's still with some trainees," Scotty replied, "he said to tell ye he'd join us later." Kirk and Scott talked while they walked around so Kirk could say his goodbye to Enterprise. Teed and Scott could see they finished way too soon for Kirk. "Goodbye and good luck to ye sir." Scotty said heartily, although there was a glitter of tears in his eyes. Then he was gone, back to his beloved engine room, leaving Kirk and Teed sitting alone in the briefing room. The door opened, and Kirk and Teed watched Spock, now in a Captain's uniform, come walking into the room. Spock, although Kirk actually knew him as a very close friend, was now into his perfect officer role. Kirk briefly thought back to his years with Spock. Teed Sibort was here today with James T. Kirk, because Kirk's relationship with his officers and crew, and Enterprise, was about to pass on to another. "Captain Spock," Kirk greeted Spock formally as he rose to stand. "Admiral Kirk," Spock said as formally. "Captain Spock, I am formally turning my duty as commander of Enterprise over to you," Kirk then said quietly. "Thank you Admiral," Spock replied gravely. "May I escort you and Commander Sibort to the transporter?" Spock asked.

At Kirk's previous request, it was as simple as that. Spock simply watched silently as Admiral James T. Kirk and Commander Teed A. Sibort stepped into the transporter. "Energize," Kirk then ordered, his voice steady and firm, although Spock had seen that Kirk's eyes glistened with tears. Then James T. Kirk was gone.
