How to Reset Photosmart Printers

Introduction Resetting the printer can resolve several issues that may emerge. All the steps in the two sections below must be followed completely and in order for these resets to work. Performing a soft reset A soft reset, also known as an Electrical reset, can be used to restore the printer to a ready condition when a cartridge, paper, or other printing issues occur. This reset method should be used for the HP Photosmart 100, 130, 145, 230 and 245 printers. Perform a hard reset for all other HP Photosmart printer models. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Disconnect any USB cables attached to the printer and remove any memory cards from drive bay. Restart the computer. Unlock the ink cartridge locking clips. Remove all ink cartridges. Lock down the ink cartridge locking clips. Close the main printer door Turn the printer off with the Power button and wait for the printer to shut down before proceeding to step 8.

8. Unplug the printer AC adapter from the printer and the wall outlet or surge protector.
NOTE: 9. The adapter itself has an overload trip that may need resetting, but will not reset if power is flowing to it. Wait approximately fifteen to forty-five seconds to allow all current to dissipate from printer.

10. Re-plug only the AC adapter into the wall outlet then into the printer, but do not plug in the USB cable. 11. Wait for the appropriate missing ink cartridge error to verify that printer can recognize this error. 12. Re-insert one ink cartridge only, to minimize confusion in case one of the cartridges is defective, and print an internal test page. 13. If no errors are found, insert the other ink cartridge(s) and ensure that they are functioning by performing internal test pages or calibration pages. If an error occurs due to a defective cartridge, perform the appropriate steps for Resolving Ink Cartridge Rejections. 14. After returning to the main Windows screen, reconnect the USB cable to the computer then to the printer. 15. Test for printer functionality. Performing a hard reset A hard, or mechanical, reset is performed when the printer is in a condition where its normal printing process is interrupted. Examples include a paper jam, carriage stall, or mechanical noise. To perform a mechanical hard reset, follow the steps below. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Disconnect any USB cables attached to the printer and remove any memory cards from drive bay. Restart the computer. Remove any paper from the paper tray. Unlock the ink cartridge locking clips. Remove all printer ink cartridges. Lock down the ink cartridge locking clips. Close the main printer door. Turn off the printer using the power button and wait for the printer to shut down before proceeding to step 9.

9.

Unplug the power from the back of the printer.

10. Unplug the power adapter from the wall outlet. 11. Remove the rear access door. 12. Locate the clutch inside the printer.

NOTE:

The clutch is located in the same place as pictured above in Figure 1, however, you must access it from the left, just above the paper output tray.

13. Press the clutch firmly towards the back of the printer, while rolling the wheels in the back of the printer upward two full rotations. 14. Release the clutch and roll the wheels up two more rotations. 15. Locate and then roll the internal rollers in an upward direction until a clicking sound is heard. 16. Reinstall and lock the rear access door. 17. Connect the power adapter to a wall outlet. 18. Reconnect the power cable to the printer. 19. Turn the printer on. 20. Re-insert the paper into the input tray. 21. Wait for the appropriate missing cartridge error to verify that the printer recognizes this error. 22. Re-insert one ink cartridge only, to minimize confusion in case one of the cartridges is defective, and print an internal test page. 23. If no errors are found, insert the other ink cartridge(s) and ensure that they are functioning by performing internal test pages or calibration pages. If an error occurs due to a defective cartridge, perform the appropriate steps for Resolving Ink Cartridge Rejections. 24. After returning to the main Windows screen, reconnect the USB cable to the computer then to the printer. 25. Test for printer functionality.

HP LaserJets - Cold Reset Instructions Cold resetting a printer resets the printer to factory defaults. Please note: Any settings you make at the printers control panel will be reset to factory defaults, including the IP address if you have a JetDirect card installed. Remove the JetDirect card while you cold reset the printer if you don't want to erase the JetDirect card's settings. You can also reset the NVRAM. Resetting the NVRAM will clear the page count and reset the service mode settings to factory defaults. On printers with a display panel you need to enter service mode to manually change the information stored in NVRAM. On printers that don't have a display panel, such as a 5P, 6P, 2100, 2200 there is a different procedure outlined below.

"Older" printers with a display panel. (e.g. 4000, 4100, 5si, 8000, etc.) Cold resetting the printer is simply a matter of turning the power off, holding down the GO or Online button while turning the printer on. Resetting NVRAM settings must be done manually through service mode. See entering service mode. "Newer" printers with a display panel. (e.g. 2300, 2400, 4200, 4250/4350, 4300, etc.) Turn the printer off and then on. When the printer begins its memory count, press and hold down the Checkmark button until all the main LED signal lights illuminate and stay illuminated. Then release the Checkmark button, and use the Up/Down arrow keys to find the Cold Reset option, then press the Checkmark button again to choose that option. Printers with no display panel. HP 1100, 1200 - While the printer is on, press and hold the Go button for 5 seconds. This will reset the printer. To reset the NVRAM. Turn the printer off. Press and hold the Go button for 20 seconds while powering on the printer. HP 2100 - To perform a cold reset, turn the printer power off, then press and hold the JOB CANCEL button. Turn the printer power back on and after all the LEDs come on release the JOB CANCEL button. A cold reset changes most system parameters in NVRAM to the factory defaults. The JOB CANCEL button must be released within 20 seconds after all of the LEDs come on; otherwise, an NVRAM initialization is performed instead of a cold reset. HP 2200 Cold reset: 1. Turn the printer power off. 2. Press and hold GO. 3. Turn the printer power back on and continue to hold GO until the Attention light turns on. 4. Release GO. 5. The device lights will begin cycling from front to rear. The cold-reset process will run until completion and the device will go to the ready state. NVRAM Reset: 1. Turn the printer power off. 2. Press and hold GO. 3. Turn the printer power back on and continue to hold GO until the Attention, Ready, and Go lights turn on. 4. Release GO. 5. The device lights will begin cycling from font to rear. The NVRAM initialization will run until completion and the device will go to the ready state. HP 5P & 6P Cold reset: Turn the power off and hold the reset button (button closest to the back of the printer) for LESS than 20 seconds

while turning the printer on. Reset the NVRAM: Turn the power off and hold the reset button for MORE than 20 seconds while turning the printer on..
