Date : 03.08.2012 In addition to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the Time Table), this portion gives further specific details regarding the course. Course No. : Course Title : Instructor-in-Charge : PHY C 332 Methods of Mathematical Physics I SUBHASH KARBELKAR

Course Description : Partial differential equations of physics, solution of partial differential equations by separation of variables method, elements of calculus of variation; series solution of ordinary differential equations, special functions, Sturm-Liouville theory; Fourier integral; Functions of a complex variable, contour integration and applications; the Green function method. Scope and Objective : MMP I is a course on mathematical methods used in solving ordinary and partial differential equations of physics. The emphasis will be on understanding the general principles and on methods of approximate evaluations of the solutions. Applications cover a wide range of physical problems. Text Books: 1.
