Title of Program: Winter Holiday Family Fun Night! Curriculum Areas/Topics Covered: ELA1R6 The student uses a variety of strategies to understand and gain meaning from gradelevel text. The student a. FRIT 7090: Program #2 December. The event will take place from 4-9. This is a one time event.

Goals and Rationale of Program: The goal of this program is to bring students and their families to the library for a funfilled event for the holidays. The students will be able to use technology to interact with Santa, watch a movie, create a craft, and listen to timeless Christmas stories. The rational is that when families spend time together and read together then the families enjoy the time spent together and by making an effort to attend an event where books are at the center, the parents are encouraging their children to read. Families that read and play together, succeed together!

Intended Audience and Demographics: This program is for the students of Fairview Elementary School. Fairview has 400 students in grades K-5. The school is in a rural community and is considered as Title1. 32% of the students receive free lunch and 10% of the students receive lunch at a reduced price. The following is the break down of the students by ethnicity: 92% white 5% Hispanic 2% Dual Race 1% Asian

Steps for Implementation: Steps: 1. Organize funds 2. Set a date and enlist volunteers 3. Create flyers to be sent home and post information on website and marquee 4. Purchase supplies 5. Meet with volunteers Day of the event 1. order pizza 2. set up everything 3. greet guests and explain the various activities and the rotations of the centers 4. Allow students and families to participate in the rotations 5. At 6:00 have everyone move to the cafeteria for pizza 6. At 7:00 start movie 7. During the movie serve the hot chocolate 8. After the movie, thank guests and as everyone is leaving give them a jingle bell 9. Clean-up

During the rotations the students will rotate between 4 stations: Station 1- Storytelling the students will listen as the librarian reads How the Grinch Stole Christmas Station 2- crafts- the students will have their picture taken and printed. The students will then paint a glass ornament into which their picture will be put into. The students will be able to paint the ornament with paint pens. Station 3- computers- The students and their families will be able to play on the internet on various Christmas websites that are pre-selected and have Christmas related games and information. Station 4- snacks- cookies and candy canes After the center rotations the students and their families will be able to enjoy a pizza dinner. After eating the families will be able to enjoy watching The Polar Express on the large projector screen in the cafeteria. The students and families will be served hot chocolate while watching the video.

Funding and Budget Needs: Funding for this program will come in part from the library budget for the school, money allotted to special programs in the school, and the money for the food, drinks, and snack will come from PTA. PTA does fundraisers throughout the school year in order to raise money for special programs and events that the school has. Number of Staff and Volunteers: For this program I will need atleast 10 volunteers. This includes myself. I will need 3 of the volunteers to be teachers. The rest can be parent volunteers or other teachers. 4 volunteers- watching over and serving snacks. 2 volunteers- helping at the craft center 2 volunteers- helping with taking pictures and printing the pictures for the ornaments 1 volunteer-watching the computer center librarian- storytelling

Marketing: A flyer will be sent home with each student in the school. The event will also be advertised on the schools marquee along with the school website. The event will also be publicized on the schools morning announcements. Youth Participation: This program is geared toward youth involvement. The students will be able to create an ornament, play on the computers, and interact with their family members and peers.

Evaluation: I will have comment cards available for the participants to fill out to see what the participants thought of the program. I will also visually observe the reactions and comments of the people at the program. Finally, I will meet with the staff members and volunteers who help with the event and see how they felt the program went. Resources: The children and their families will be able to browse holiday books that the library has available. Pamplets on internet safety will be available for parents. A newsletter of school and local holiday events in the community will also be available to the program participants.
