Experiencing ones own potential, by learning, understanding and creating to the best of ones ability. The connection between two or more people. It is shaped by their roles, feelings and interactions. ! Showing acceptance and regard for another persons values, feelings, lifestyle and decisions. A persons awareness of the misfortune and suffering of another person and the desire and actions taken to reduce or eliminate the problem. ! ! Putting yourself in another persons shoes. Understanding another persons emotions by seeing things from his/her viewpoint. Feeling pity, compassion or understanding the difculties of another person. Performing ones job safely and within ones scope of practice or legal limits. Understanding ones own feelings, moods, attitudes, preferences, biases, qualities and limitations. Not relying on others for support; being able to manage without help. Relying on others for support; being unable to manage without help. Relying on each other for support; typical amongst groups or teams. A person - usually a family member or close friend - who assumes the responsibility of caring for a dependent person usually in the persons home.

Something to which a person is entitled to by law. A constitutional document. Lists the basic rights and freedoms to which all Canadians are entitled to such as Freedom of Speech. Respecting, guarding and using discretion with personal and private information about another person. ! Agreeing or giving approval (i.e. medical treatment, health care, personal care) Where a person gives consent to an action or procedure after being given all important and relevant information incl. the situation and potential complications. a.k.a. Proxy. A person authorized to make health care decisions, such as to give or withhold consent, on behalf of someone who is unable to do so. a.k.a. Self-Determination. Having the freedom and choice to make decisions that affect ones life. Failure to act in a careful or competent manner resulting in harm to a person or damage to property. Intentionally attempting to or threatening to touch a persons body without consent, causing the person to fear bodily harm. The touching of a persons body without the persons consent. Violating a persons right not to have his name, photograph, private affairs, health information or any personal information exposed or made public without consent. Troubling, tormenting, offending or worrying a person through ones behaviour or comments. Without invitation, permission or welcome. To conne or keep within limits, as of space, action, choice, intensity or quantity.

Chapter 12 - Caring about Culture and Diversity Terms: Discrimination, Personal Space, DIPPS, Stereotype, Culture, Racism, Prejudice, Diversity, Ethnicity _______________! ! ! ! ! ! ! _______________! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! Characteristics of a group of people - (incl. values, beliefs, customs, habits, traditions, etc.) - that are passed from one person to the next and from generation to generation. Not limited to ethnic background. Acronym for Dignity, Independence, Privacy, Preferences & Safety. The unfair treatment of people on the basis of such aspects as their physical characteristics, health history, or group membership. The state of different individuals and cultures coexisting. Sharing of common history, language, geography, national origin, religion or identity. The area immediately around ones body to which a person is comfortable having to themselves.

An attitude that forms an opinion on a person based on his/her membership in a group. Feelings of intolerance or prejudice toward a person or group of people because of physical appearances or cultural practices. An overly simplied exaggerated view of a group of people.
