Colon Hydrotherapy The True Cost of Colonics By: Carla Roter

Colonics and Naturopathy: Colonics goes hand in hand with any holistic practice. At least it should. One of the main institutions for naturopathy in Canada, for example, does not currently have colonics in its curriculum. What they do have, (regarding colonics) is a standard of practice that is at least 25 years old. This needs to be updated. How can naturopaths be recommending and offering colonics when they havent been properly updated on current practices, technology and knowledge? We are now at a time when both the technology and knowledge is truly cutting edge, and yet, I keep hearing outdated information being given to clients. Even if those in the medical profession are not trained, they should have a basic knowledge about what colon hydrotherapy is, its uses and the practice of it. This comes back to the issue of credibility. Colonics is under the umbrella of Naturopathy, so this would be an expected minimum. If you use a machine without proper training, there is a possibility of damaging the colon from the use of too much pressure. Water pressure should be at about the psi of gravity. Specialized training is required to ensure adequate understanding and to prevent injury. What I am offering is a solution to remedy this. There needs to be a separate course dealing specifically with colon hydrotherapy and its practice. By working together, naturopaths and colonic hydrotherapists would be better able to educate clients as to the safest and best possible level of care available in the world to date. What does proper care in todays world entail?

Proper training by a health professional The use of up-to-date equipment Full Intake/assessment Light exercise Probiotic supplement of some kind Colon hydrotherapy treatment

Abdominal (and if possible pressure point) massage Electrolyte maintenance Replenishing of intestinal flora Nutritional Guidance Continued guidance and re-evaluation post treatment

What does proper training mean, exactly?

Being trained on modern technology and best practices Having a solid understanding of the indications for colon hydrotherapy (Yes, there ARE times when a colonic is NOT warranted). Understanding when certain conditions, prescriptions or situations require the direct supervision of a physician Having a sound understanding of contraindications for colon hydrotherapy (Similar but not identical to the first point). Being able to read bodily conditions based on stool passed

Nutrition support is perhaps the biggest part of my practice. Clients and practitioners alike need to understand that colonics is not a quick fix. It doesnt matter if you have five or six or ten colon hydrotherapy treatments. If you dont change your diet and incorporate all the nutritional support necessary to aid in the process, then colonics will NOT be a long term fix. Its not about how many treatments you have; the whole package needs to be implemented for full benefits. As stated above, Naturopathy and colonics hold hands together. About 80% of people who see a naturopath get put onto detox programs. If they dont get a colonic, they are missing a very important and crucial part of the detoxification process. At least ONE colonic protocol should be a part of the process. (As long as the client can get a colonic with no contraindications). Its very sad that this is not yet a part of the protocol. My dream is to see this in hospitals and clinics. Ideally, practitioners and medical professionals working together to provide clients with the best possible care which should include colon hydrotherapy.
