DOERS OF THE WORD The second reading for today begins a fiveweek series of selections from James, a letter that is classified among the so-called catholic (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one particular community. Todays text offers important advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular, reference is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the first fruits of the new creation. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the word as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become doers of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the works of love, for example, by caring for the orphans and widows in their affliction. Copyright J. S. KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME
As the priest comes to the altar and as he leaves it, he kisses the altar. After he proclaims the Gospel, he kisses the Book of the Gospels. Before Holy Communion, we exchange the Sign of Peace, which tradition-ally has been called the kiss of peace. The altar is a sign and symbol of Christ. The priest not only expresses reverence for Christ by bowing before the altar, but also expresses affection and closeness by kissing it. So, too, with the words of the Gospel and with the sign of peace exchanged among ourselves, there is honor and rever-ence and, even more, there are deep bonds of affection. To kiss is to renew affection and attachment. In the Mass, our affection for and our attachment to Jesus and each other finds renewal in a kiss.

W dzisiejszej Ewangelii Jezus proponuje czowiekowi program ekologii serca. Wanie ono najbardziej potrzebuje uzdrowienia, bo z niego pochodzi wszelkie zo. bp. Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz
