INTRODUCTION The Industrial Experience and Professional Communicationforms an integral part of the B.Eng (Honours) in Civil Engineering course. The Industrial Experience and Professional Communication contains an Industrial
Placement element consisting of a period of not less than 12 weeks duration at a suitable workplace. Students are required to successfully complete the period of industrial placement as partial fulfilment of this subject and hence the course. These guidelines provide the necessary background information and the requirements of the 12 week placement. Students failing to achieve an industrial placement position will be required to complete an industrial project (please see industrial project guidelines).
The aim of the industrial placement is to expose students to the practical applications of civil engineering which will enhance the overall learning experience of the student.
The learning outcomes/objectives of the placement are to: 1. gain a practical understanding of the Civil Engineering and Construction Industry in Ireland or abroad; 2. gain a detailed insight into industrial practices in their chosen area of specialisation; 3. develop an understanding of the application of design, management and operational theories and practices; 4. demonstrate autonomy in their work practices and introduce the use of self discipline and self motivation in managing their own duties; 5. broaden their commercial vision; Students on placement will be supervised by the assigned lecturer (Dr. Michael Mc Loughlin) so as to ensure that the objectives of the placement are being met. Contact with the company supervisor may be maintained during the course of the placement so that assessment of student's progress can be made.
Students will be required to submit an interim report, a final report and two essays regarding their industrial placement. The final report will be placement specific but would typically include topic areas such as: o o o o o o o o o
Overview of thedesign brief or Scheme Function/Design Brief Stage of Scheme/Design Project Site Investigation, Site Selection and Scheme Layout and General Site Conditions Site Organisation/Site Safety or Consultancy Practice Specific Construction/Engineering Technology (Design or Site
Technology) Surveying and Setting Out or Scheme Layout Scheme Management Efficiency of scheme operation Contract Administration
It is expected that the 12 week industrial placement period would typically include some of the following: o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o Assisting the design/site engineer/agent or manager Participating in elements of construction/structural/environmental or civil engineering design Assisting through numerical evaluation in the design of sections of the scheme Participating in the production of scheme details Relaying information to and from site Supervision of elements of site work Surveying and setting out Assisting in the supervision of work Checking the quality of construction work Dealing with correspondence Ordering materials and plant Keeping up to date accounts of materials, plant and labour Enforcing health and safety practices on site Assisting in the preparation of work schedules and programmes Assisting in the preparation of variations, valuations and final accounts Document Control

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT The industrial placement will commence in June. Students on placement will be interviewed in early June to assess progress on the placement. The supervising lecture reserves the right to contact the employer during the course of the placement as part assessment of student progress on placement. The students will also be required to produce an interim Finally the
student will be interviewed and required to make a formal presentation regarding their experience over the placement period. The flow chart below summarises the key stages of the industrial placement.
First interview will take place in AIT one in June The lecturer will meet with the student and may contact the employer
Preparation and submission of an Interim Experience Report by the student on or before July
The complete interim experience report must be e-mailed to the supervisor on or before the above date. It is strongly advised that the interim report is supported with evidence such as appendixes of Drawings.
Preparation and submission of the Final Experience Report and two essays by the student on or before end of September

Detailed Outline of Industrial Placement Commence Industrial Placement Industrial placement is to be commenced on Mid Junefollowing examinations.
First Interview The first interview will take place in June / July. The employer may be contacted prior to the interview. Resultantly, in the interest of clarity it is important for the student to effectively communication the requirements of the placement to the employer. The student will be expected to produce completed daily log sheets and analysis of daily log sheets at the first interview. The student will also be required to demonstrate the quality of his/her experience.
Preparation and Submission of Interim Experience Report The interim experience report will involve the student preparing a 500 word summary of their experience to date as well as updating daily log sheets and analysis of daily log sheets. All documentation shall be typed and submitted to Dr. Michael McLoughlin mmcloughlin@ait.ieat the Department of Civil, Construction and Mineral Engineering on or before last Friday in July.
Preparation and Submission of Experience Report and Essays Each student will prepare and submit the following to Dr. Michael Mc Loughlin at the Office of the Department of Civil, Construction and Mineral Engineering:
1. A 500 word interim experience report o Provide an overview of your duties and responsibilities within the company. Highlight early learning experiences and knowledge gained. Identify daily task and level of supervision. Comment on
how tasks are disseminated (methods of communication) and how feedback if given to supervisors. The daily log sheets and analysis of daily log sheets shall be typed and copies appended to the 500 word report.
2. A 5,000 word experience report o Highlighting levels of responsibility, description of duties, problems experienced and how you overcame these problems. It is
expected that the student will describe in detail their experience under the headings described in section 1. The daily log sheets and analysis of daily log sheets shall be typed and appended to the 5,000 word report.
3. Two 1,000 word essays. The essays shall be prepared and submitted from the following a list provided by the lecturer on the first site visit: o o o o o o o o o The Role of the Civil Engineer in Modern Society Ethics and the engineering profession Infrastructural development in Ireland past, present and future Management and Communication Skills in Civil Engineering The application of Civil Engineering theory to the solution of practical problems A students perspective of life as a Civil Engineer The Engineering of Aesthetics Public perception of the Civil Engineering Technological advances in modern Civil Engineering
Essay may reflect on experiential learning including commentary of experience, i.e. draw from personal experience gained on placement.
Interview and Presentation The final interview will involve a 30 minute interview with members of AIT staff in mid October. The interview will assess specific areas of
experience such as the level of responsibility attained and the typical range of duties performed. PowerPoint facilities will be available to the student if required. The student will be expected to give a 10 minute presentation to their peer group on their experience in mid October.
