Connecting a DPU Bus

Introduction
In a maxDNA system, DPU Bus Modules (DBMs) and Models PDP 001 and PDP 100 Series Distributed Processing Units (DPUs) communicate with each other over a DPU Bus, consisting of electrical and possibly optical cable. This publication discusses DPU Bus optical and electrical cabling and a method for making cable connections which should minimize troubleshooting at startup. For additional troubleshooting help, refer to Publication 278581, DPU Bus Troubleshooting. The DPU Bus design uses two totally redundant paths for communication. If one path fails, the other will handle all communication tasks with no loss of communication or DPU Bus performance. DPUs and DBMs are rack-mounted in a Remote Processing Unit cabinet. Electrical DPU bus cable is used to interconnect DPUs and DBMs within each RPU cabinet and between cabinets in multiple cabinet strings. When multiple RPU cabinets are spread over a long distance, a system consisting of two redundant optical repeater rings may be used. See next section and Chapter 2.

Three DPU Bus Networking Approaches

The DPU Bus can be implemented in three ways, a fiber optic ring with redundant electrical spurs, a Wrap-back OEI network, or an Electrical-only network.

Fiber Optic Ring Network

This network type consists of two optical rings connected to local electrical spurs via Optical/Electrical Interfaces (OEIs). See "OpticalElectrical Interface (OEI)." This is shown in Figure 1-1. One ring passes data in a clockwise (CW) direction while the other ring passes the same data in a counter clockwise (CCW) direction. The two optical rings are identified as clockwise and counterclockwise because of the direction of the light transmission in the rings. The corresponding electrical spurs are also identified as clockwise and counterclockwise, for consistency. Each electrical spur begins at an OEI and ends at a terminator. Although the electrical spurs are RS-485 multidrop networks, each station is provided with separate In and

Out connectors so that any station can be bypassed without affecting the rest of the network.

Wrap-Back OEI Network

The wrap-back OEI network is the minimum size collapsed optical network. For many installations, this approach is more typical than the optical ring network approach. In the wrap-back OEI network, there is only one pair of OEIs. A short length of optical cable connects the OEI optical emitter to the optical detector as shown in Figure 1-2. Electrical cable is used to connect DPUs and DBMs. The electrical cable portion is treated as a electrical spur. As such, the electrical cable may extend up to 200 feet from an OEI, and you may attach up to 15 stations per spur. See Table 1-1.

Electrical-Only Network
The electrical-only network contains no OEIs. The network begins at a female terminator and ends at a mail terminator. An electrical-only network may consist of up to 8 stations. The maximum network cable length is 100 feet. The electrical-only network is shown in Figure 1-2. The following table summarizes key configuration data related to stations:
Table 1-1. DPU Bus Station Count Limitations

Stations Maximum Number Stations per optical DPU Bus 32 Electrical Spurs/OEI Pairs per DPU Bus 10 15 Stations per electrical DPU Bus spur 8 Stations for an electrical-only DPU Bus The total length of electrical cable on one electrical spur must not exceed: 200 feet from OEI to male terminator 100 feet from female to male terminator The optical cable length of each ring must not exceed: 6600 feet (2 kilometers) between OEIs 20,000 feet (6 kilometers) circumference Note: Each spur can have a maximum total extension of 200 feet with up to 15 stations, so long as the global limits (DPUs/32 stations/10 OEI pairs) are not exceeded.

Connecting to maxNET
The DPU Bus is used only to connect DPUs with DPU Bus Modules. The maxNET network interconnects the DBM with maxSTATIONs. See Publication 278578, maxNET Network Preparation and Adjustment.

Installation Overview

278580
Before you undertake a cable installation, it is assumed that these prerequisites have been met: Ethernet network connecting maxSTATIONs and DPU Bus Modules has been installed DPU Bus cable routes have been established Location of electrical spurs has been determined Number and location of stations within each spur has been established Appropriate lengths of optical and electrical cable are available

If you plan to implement an optical ring network, optical cables should be installed and connected first. Next, a DPU and a DPU Bus Module are installed and connected. This combination is required to verify performance of the optical system. One at a time, each electrical spur is then connected and its performance verified. This procedure provides a method for isolating problems that could occur due to component failure in complex multistation systems.

Optical-Electrical Interface (OEI)

Electrical DPU Buses are connected to optical DPU Buses using Model OEI Optical-Electrical Interface (OEI) devices. These self-contained OEI units may also be used to extend electrical cables over longer distances and as repeaters to extend optical cable lengths beyond 6,600 feet. (nominally 2 km). The Model OEI022 OEI is used with 200 micron fiber optic cable.

OEI Wiring
See Publication 278561, System Power and Grounding, for information about OEI power wiring. Terminal 5 on terminal board TB1 of each OEI must be connected to earth ground.

Connecting Stations to a DPU Bus

Electrical DPU Buses connect DPU Bus Modules and Model PDP Distributed Processing Unit (DPU) devices locally into groups. Devices connected to a DPU Bus are referred to as stations. In a maxDNA system the following hardware is present and mounted as described in the following:

DPU Bus Module

The DBM is a rack-mounted industrial PC used to interface to and collect data from the DPUs. It collects information from DPUs on the DPU Bus, stores it, and ultimately transfers the information to connected maxSTATIONs. The DPU Bus Module resides in the Remote Processing Unit cabinet with I/O modules and DPU. For redundancy a system should use a minimum of two DBMs.

Mounting the DPU Bus Module

The DBM is normally installed on sliding rails in the upper portion of an RPU cabinet, and secured with two screws on their lower front panel. These screws must always be in place to prevent the Processor from accidentally sliding out. Service loops are provided on all standard cables to allow Processors to slide out without requiring disconnection. DPU Bus Modules require a source of AC power. See Publication 278561, System Power and Grounding.

Distributed Processing Unit

The DPU, the process controller, provides control and data acquisition functions. It can be redundant or standalone. The DPU must be mounted in the right most position of the Model IOP rack since the DPU is wider than the I/O cards and requires good air flow. In a six-wide I/O rack, the mounting bracket to the left of the DPU must be removed since the DPU requires an I/O panel. When using a second DPU for backup, it must be mounted vertically adjacent to the primary DPU.

278580

To ease migration from earlier max systems to maxDNA, you may connect the following MAX 1000 and MAX 1 hardware. Several MAX 1000 and MAX 1 station types may be connected to the DPU Bus. Stations fall into two categories, system monitors and controllers: MAX 1000 System Monitors Model EWS Workstation or earlier models

Note: A Workstation consists of a Model PRS Real-Time Processor, (which connects directly to a DPU Bus), and Model PGC Graphics Processor, and Model PAC Applications Processors, which are connected to a Real-Time Processor via SCSI or 10Base2 cables. MAX 1 System Monitors Model 582 and 585 Operator Station Model 587 Highway Direct Interface (HDI) Model 586 Historical Data Processor (HDP)

Controllers Model PDP Distributed Processing Unit (DPU) Model 552 Controller File

Note: while current maxDNA systems use the Model OEI022 OEI and 200 micron optical cable, earlier systems may use the Model OEI012 OEI, which is used with 100 micron fiber optic cable. This unit includes optical cable adapters to mate the ST style optical connectors on the OEI with the AMP OPTIMATE connectors on the 100 micron optical cable. In any one location, either Model OEI022 or Model OEI012 OEIs with appropriate fiber optic cable should be used to avoid confusion with respect to spare OEIs, service, and repairs.
