Application Introduction
YEAR: 2011 TO: Hamlines Hall of Fame Committee FROM: Bruce McKinnon / Members of the 1962, 1964 and 1965 Tennis Teams Our Hamline Hall of Fame Nomination Project in Perspective: Dick Stebbins and I were best friends all the way through college. We also played on the same tennis team and were doubles partners for about half of our 4 years at Hamline (60-64). We really admired Dr. Lewis (we called him Doc). Four + years after graduation from Hamline, we tried to find Doc to reconnect and get his address for our Christmas list, etc. Repeated calls to Hamline as to his whereabouts over the years ended with staff who did not know who we were even talking about. That always really bothered us. As it turns out, after Doc left Hamline, he moved to Denison University, Granville, Ohio for several years, but moved again to take a position as Director of Libraries with his Alma Mater, Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, OH. Unfortunately, we did not find that out until 47 years later. When Dick and I exchanged casual e-mails in February 2011, Dick once again ended his comments with I wonder whatever happened to Doc. Well that did it for me I was going to get an answer to that question come hell or high water. I was on a mission. Fortunately, along with today's phone systems, we now also have the Internet and Google at our disposal which were not available back in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. Regardless, trying to find new or 45 year old data was a real task. I had moved from Minnesota at age 31 to never again return to live. So I started my search by first finding and then calling my former tennis teammates those with whom I spent so much time during the 1961-1964 tennis seasons. I had not talked to 95% of them in almost 47 years, but we sure have talked many times since -- a real treat. After many hours of searching, information obtained during these calls eventually led to Bens son Bob then to Ben. I couldnt believe Doc was still alive. This took place just weeks before he passed away on April 1, 2011 at age 91. His health was extremely fragile. I was able to talk with him by phone even though he could only make sounds for response. I know that he heard and understood everything I said. Especially Thank you Doc for all that you did for us. It made a difference in 19 of our lives. If nothing more came from this effort, then that would be OK. During this process, I determined Dick and I were not the only ones from our teams who had unsuccessfully tried to locate Doc through Hamline. My search process also re-emphasized the win / loss tennis record for the team I had played on four years. I had really forgotten about those days--I guess we all did. Life happens. Good grief, I was almost 70 years old. But, it became increasingly apparent to us all what Doc had really accomplished as our coach, in spite of the material he had to work with (well some of us anyway). And, we all ended up as pretty good tennis players. So when we finally found him, we decided to nominate Doc for induction into Hamlines Athletic Hall of Fame. Give the man his due - we all felt good about that -- he earned it. He would not be forgotten. During my hours of searching through historical MIAC conference college records, what I found gave special meaning to Doctor Lewiss legacy for tennis at Hamline (and for our lives as a by-product). It put our years playing tennis from 1961 through 1964 / 65 into a different perspective. For example, in 90 years (1920-2010), Hamline had only won 2 MIAC conference tennis championships (maybe ONE other in 1923), both during my 4 years at Hamline and I was down the ladder. In some ways, it was like that fish story where the fish just keeps getting bigger and bigger with every story told or new piece of information found. Except in this case, it really happened. So, our Nominating Group felt that we should also try then to get the 1962 and 1964 teams into the Hamline Hall of Fame as well -- a package deal. Now I did not keep up with Hamlines tennis teams after Dick and I graduated from Hamline in 1964. Until I became involved in this project in February 2011, I was unaware that the 1965 tennis team also won the MIAC Conference Championship with the same players (less 3, plus 3) from the prior year and years back. Wow -- that was 3 championships in 4 years. But I also discovered that the MIAC website showed Macalester as 1965 Conference champions not Hamline. How could that be? With that, I decided to see if we also could PROVE that the 1965 team earned the MIAC title (as clearly noted in our 1965 Hamline Liner yearbook). And we did with help from others. It was at that point that our group of 18 of 19 living tennis players decided that we would nominate Doc and all 3 teams for induction into Hamlines Hall of Fame. No other Hamline sports team (except those of the Joe Hutton basketball era) in any other sport had ever put a sustained string of conference victories together like Docs tennis TEAMS. So now the Hall of Fame Committee can better understand why we nominated Doctor Lewis with the 3 tennis teams he guided to the MIAC conference titles. It was then and was now a team effort. We look(ed) forward to the Hall of Fame Committees decision.

Lewis, Ph.D. PLUS Conference Champion Tennis Teams 1962, 1964 & 1965 Responsibilities: 1. Director of the Hamline Library (Staff, 1955 to 1964) 2. Hamline Tennis Coach (seasons 1958-1964) 3. Hamline Assistant Swimming & Diving Coach (exact period unknown) Hall of Fame Sport: Hamline Tennis INTRODUCTION: The former members of Hamlines Tennis Team during the coaching career of Dr. Ben Lewis hereby nominate Dr. Lewis for induction into Hamlines Athletic Hall of Fame -- based on his contributions as tennis team coach during the tennis seasons of 1958 to 1964 (7 seasons) and a spill over (8th) year in 1965. Significance: Ben was a reserved, dignified man who always demonstrated the qualities of honesty and integrity -- the epitome of sportsmanship as our coach. Ben was clearly a man of academic accomplishment and always conducted himself in a professional manner. While seemingly quiet and laid back, he was articulate and demonstrated sensitivity coupled with a disarming sense of humor. He consistently showed great wisdom and leadership (by example and action). He genuinely cared about each team member regardless of player rank. Dr. Lewis was respected and admired by every member of his tennis teams without reservation. He was clearly a man of unquestionable character and a genuinely first class human being. Coaching: Ben combined the perfect mix of organization, structure, quiet motivation and knowledge of the game of tennis as our coach. He was deeply involved in the success of his men as individuals, students, players and most of all as a team. Consequently, all team members worked hard to be good representatives for Hamline, the sport and the team -- given the very nature of Bens example. While VERY knowledgeable of the mechanics of the sport (he was also a good tennis player), his coaching focused on supporting his players in a watchful and quiet way. When Dr. Lewis occasionally made comments about a players tennis skills (or lack thereof), his observations were always perceptive and articulated in a thoughtful and positive context (or humorous at just the right moment -- one of his uncanny, likeable strengths). Accomplishments: The MIAC was formed in 1920. Conference tennis records were confusing and not detailed prior to 2000. The MIAC recordbook suggests that Hamline possibly captured all or part of 3 conference tennis championships during the 1920s (singles in 1921 + doubles in 1923 and 1928). However, MIAC individual TEAM conference standings (win / loss season records) were not recorded. Hamline did NOT win any conference championship during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The TEAM won 3 championships during the 1960s (62, 64 & 65), 2 while Ben was our tennis coach (62 & 64) AND none in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s through 2012. Hamlines 1964-1965 Liner shows that the tennis team posted a 10 win / 1 loss record and an 8-0 season standing for the MIAC 1965 Tennis Team Conference Championship. Thats 16 straight conference dual meet wins in 2 years without a loss. 1965 was the year after Dr. Lewis left to take a position as Director of Libraries at Denison University in Ohio. However, this championship was WON with 7 tennis letterman all of whom played during one or more of Bens 3 prior coaching years. Conference standings: 1961=3rd; 1962=1st; 1963=2nd; 1964=1st and 1965=1st all in all, an outstanding coaching record. Ben volunteered to coach at Hamline but did not coach tennis in his subsequent two college positions. Three of the 19 above tennis players (Hutton, Lipelt and R. Strohkrich) had exceptional Minnesota high school tennis coaching careers (plus other sports) after graduation from Hamline. Four of 19 have already been inducted into Hamlines Hall of Fame for their involvement in tennis and/or other sports while in Piper athletic programs. One Hamline Hall of Famer (Lipelt) was also inducted into the Minnesota High School Coaches Hall of Fame. Yet another (Roscoe) was Hamlines tennis coach from 1976 to 1981. Most went on to play tournament and/or club tennis in later life. Since 1920, with the possible exception of 1921 (only individual doubles and singles champions were determined then), only 3 Hamline tennis teams were MIAC Conference Champions -- all directly influenced by Bens coaching. Ben & Lois Lewis In 2011: At the start of this Hall of Fame nomination project in February 2011, Ben (who passed away 4-1-011 at age 91) and his wife Lois lived in an assisted living facility in Red Wing, MN in the same community as one of their two sons , Bob, who later played on the tennis team and graduated from Hamline (69). The idea to nominate Dr. Lewis for Hamlines Hall of Fame was pursued entirely by 19 tennis team alumni (Wirtanen posthumously) without the suggestion, influence or knowledge of our nominee or his family (although they were delighted with the thought when informed). We respectfully request that Hamline consider this nomination as a gesture to a great man who earned our respect and invested in our gamesmanship, personal mental growth, and life successes. He definitely made a significant contribution to the success and reputation of Hamline University. It would be an honor well deserved and recognition long overdue. A review of the above CHART demonstrates that the 1962, 1964 and 1965 Hamline Tennis Teams established a winning record that has NEVER been duplicated in 92 years (1920 to 2012). No other Hamline sport (except those of the Joe Hutton basketball era) have ever put a sustained string of conference victories together like the records of the TEAMS under the direction / influence of tennis coach Dr. Ben Lewis during the 1960s.

The above chart notes that the MIAC has obtained some documentation for the scoring systems used to award conference championships for TEAMS during the period 1940 to 2010, but not before. This is a MUST BUY book that refers to many Hamline players. Every high school and college library in Minnesota should purchase this High School tennis encyclopedia -- a great history of tennis from 1929 to 2003+. Jim Holden, a retired highly regarded Northfield tennis coach, past Minnesota State High School Tennis Coaches Association President and Hall of Fame member, is the perfect author for a comprehensive work of this nature. The book chronicles high School tennis singles and doubles players who played in Minnesota State High School tennis tournaments and many of the coaches who had remarkable coaching careers. It identifies famous tennis families and high school dynasties as well as college tennis players who went on to distinguish themselves in tennis (and other sports) in state coaching ranks. The book, edited by Steve Wilkinson, is beautifully laid out, easy to read, personal, sensitive and crammed full of great details (433 pages).
Steve Wilkinson: Coaches can make the difference ! Wilkinson arrived at Gustavus as a religion

professor in 1970 and was asked if he would be willing to voluntarily coach the tennis team. Steve had played collegiate tennis at the University of Iowa where he finished second in #1 doubles at the Big Ten Championships as a senior. The rest is history. Steve became the winningest coach in the history of collegiate mens tennis (Divisions I, II, and III and NAIA) over the next 39 years. Wilkinsons teams won 35 MIAC titles + 2 NCAA Division III titles (1980 and 1982). His players claimed 6 national doubles and 4 national singles titles. He coached 46 players to 87 ITA All-America honors, 103 players to 226 All-Conference honors, and 5 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. His teams achieved an overall record of 929-260 (.720%) and a MIAC mark of 329-1 or .970%.

Steve Wilkinson
Retired Gustavus Coach Steve assisted with the identification of accurate MIAC Conference Tennis championship determination protocol needed to support Hamline claims to three Conference championships for the years 1962, 1964 & 1965.

Wilkinson also played competitive tennis for many years after college and ranked #1 in the US in the 45, 50, 55 and 60 and over divisions. He represented the US in the Dubler Cup, Perry Cup and Austria Cup competition winning the world championship in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1989 and finished second in Berlin, Germany in 1992. Steve was inducted into the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame (1974), Northern Tennis Association Hall of Fame (1983) and the US Tennis Association Missouri Valley Hall of Fame (1999). Steve retired in 2009 as Gustavus Tennis coach due to an illness. But, he and his wife Barbara continued to work with the Tennis and Life Camps (TLC) which he founded --the largest tennis camp in one location in the US -- until 2011. AND, with no strings attached, Steve helped ME (a total stranger) to establish that Hamline was in fact the MIAC 1965 Tennis Conference Champions. Thank YOU Steve.

High school teammates Jim Miller and John Wirtanen (a year behind Miller won the Minnesota State high school doubles championship in 1961. John then went to play on 2 Hamline Conference Championship Teams (64, 65). John was diagnosed with cancer his senior year (65-66) while at Hamline. He was not able to finish his 4 year degree nor could he play on Hamlines 1966 team. John passed away in the early fall of 66. The Wirtanen Tennis Scorebook was later named in Johns memory and remains the scorebook of choice by tennis coaches + teams throughout the US -- to this day.

Based on evidence provided by Bruce, Hamline and verification from Macalester, it is the MIACs official decision that Hamline University was indeed the 1965 MIAC mens tennis champion. As of this morning, I have updated the MIAC Mens Tennis Recordbook on the MIAC Web site to reflect this, and have adjusted each teams total titles and last title to reflect the change as well. You can view that updated page Here: http://www.miac-online.org/sports/2007/8/13/mtenrecordbook.aspx I am saving all documentation from this process to back up the MIACs decision to list Hamline as the MIAC Champion for 1965, and this summer I plan to add language to our Web site to clarify the changing nature in which the champion was determined.
