IEEE Standards documents are developed within the IEEE Societies and the Standards Coordinating Committees of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Standards Board. Members of the committees serve voluntarily and without compensation. They are not necessarily members of the Institute. The standards developed within IEEE represent a consensus of the broad expertise on the subject within the Institute as well as those activities outside of IEEE that have expressed an interest in participating in the development of the standard. Use of an IEEE Standard is wholly voluntary. The existence of an IEEE Standard does not imply that there are no other ways to produce, test, measure, purchase, market, or provide other goods and services related to the scope of the IEEE Standard. Furthermore, the viewpoint expressed at the time a standard is approved and issued is subject to change brought about through developments in the state of the art and comments received from users of the standard. Every IEEE Standard is subjected to review at least every ve years for revision or reafrmation. When a document is more than ve years old and has not been reafrmed, it is reasonable to conclude that its contents, although still of some value, do not wholly reect the present state of the art. Users are cautioned to check to determine that they have the latest edition of any IEEE Standard. Comments for revision of IEEE Standards are welcome from any interested party, regardless of membership afliation with IEEE. Suggestions for changes in documents should be in the form of a proposed change of text, together with appropriate supporting comments. Interpretations: Occasionally questions may arise regarding the meaning of portions of standards as they relate to specic applications. When the need for interpretations is brought to the attention of IEEE, the Institute will initiate action to prepare appropriate responses. Since IEEE Standards represent a consensus of all concerned interests, it is important to ensure that any interpretation has also received the concurrence of a balance of interests. For this reason, IEEE and the members of its societies and Standards Coordinating Committees are not able to provide an instant response to interpretation requests except in those cases where the matter has previously received formal consideration. Comments on standards and requests for interpretations should be addressed to: Secretary, IEEE-SA Standards Board 445 Hoes Lane P.O. Box 1331 Piscataway, NJ 08855-1331 USA

Note: Attention is called to the possibility that implementation of this standard may require use of subject matter covered by patent rights. By publication of this standard, no position is taken with respect to the existence or validity of any patent rights in connection therewith. The IEEE shall not be responsible for identifying patents for which a license may be required by an IEEE standard or for conducting inquiries into the legal validity or scope of those patents that are brought to its attention.

Introduction
(This introduction is not part of IEEE Std 1101.11-1998, IEEE Standard for Mechanical Rear Plug-in Units Specications for Microcomputers Using IEEE 1101.1 and IEEE 1101.10 Equipment Practice.)

Despite the push for metrication, the Euroboard (19 in based) continues to be the leading choice for the industrial mechanical equipment practice, and is accepted throughout the world for all kinds of electronics applications. Among these are all major bus architectures, such as VME, CompactPCI, etc. This is why the Computer Societys Technical Committee on Microcomputers and Microprocessors found it appropriate to create an IEEE standard which further expands upon IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997) and the IEC 60297-... series of standards, Dimensions of Mechanical Structures of the 482.6 mm (19 in) Series, [IEC 60297-3 (1984-01) and IEC 60297-4 (1995-03)] for rear plug-in units. This standard is an extension of IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997) and IEEE Std 1101.10-1996 (submitted to the IEC) and denes the mechanical rear plug-in unit sizes and interface details. At the time this standard was completed, the P1101.11 Working Group had the following membership: Eike Waltz, Chair Frank Hom, Secretary

1.1.4 Choice of connectors This standard refers only to connectors in accordance with IEC 60603-2 (1995-09) [B6] and as referenced in IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997) and IEEE Std 1101.10-1996. Other IEC connectors may be used by themselves or mixed with IEC 60603-2 connectors. This standard denes inspection dimensions required for IEC 60603-2 and IEC 61076-4-1xx connectors. Inspection dimensions for the IEC 61076-4-101 series of connectors may be found in Annex A. This standard also denes the difference between a front plug-in unit connector and a rear plug-in unit connector (see Figure 6). 1.1.5 Rear connector shrouds This standard denes the dimensions of compatible connector shrouds. 1.1.6 Front and rear plug-in unit front panel protective ground This standard denes mechanical interface and electrical test requirements for input/output (I/O) plug-in unit protective ground protection with reference to IEC 60950 (1991-10) [B8].

1.2 Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to specify additional dimensions that, when followed, will ensure mechanical interchangeability of subracks and plug-in units based on IEEE Std 1101.10-1996 and the environmental requirements of IEC 61587-1 (May 1998-Draft) and IEC 61587-3 (May 1998-Draft).
NOTEIEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997), IEC 60297-3 (1984-01), and IEC 60297-4 (1995-03) subrack systems not complying with these additional standard requirements have limited compatibility.

4. General arrangement
Generally, subracks featuring rear plug-in units are also equipped with front plug-in units and/or ller panels in accordance with IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997) and IEEE Std 1101.10-1996. The front and rear plug-in unit PBs are in-line, meaning that there is no offset between the front and rear PBs. (The component side 1 of the front and rear PB are in the same mechanical plane).
NOTES 1The drawings in this standard are not intended to indicate design. 2All dimensions are given in millimeters. 3All drawings in this standard are shown in rst angle projection according to ISO 1101-1983 [B12]. 4Dimensions appearing in parentheses ( ) are for reference only, and are dened in the stated documents. 5Terminology follows IEC 60050 [B2] and IEC 60916 (1988-07) [B7].

5. Relationships of front and rear plug-in units

There are two possible ways to mount rear plug-in units into a subrack while providing for front and additional rear plug-in units. They are as follows: a) b) The in-line conguration, which is preferred (see Figure 2). The offset conguration, which is not detailed in this standard (see Figure 2).

This standard will only focus on the dimensional interchangeability of the in-line conguration.

Figure 2The in-line versus the offset conguration

5.1 The in-line conguration, non-EMC and EMC

The in-line conguration (see Figure 3) allows the front plug-in unit and the rear plug-in unit to be mechanically coplanar. It also allows the subracks front plug-in units and front ller panels, as standardized in IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997) and IEEE Std 1101.10-1996, to be mechanically mounted on the rear of the subrack (not necessarily electrically). At the same time, this conguration permits 3 row IEC 60603-2 C-type connectors to be mixed with 5 row IEC 61076-4-1xx connectors.

7. Connector orientation, pin labeling, and printed board component view

Connectors are generally dened as free connectors (mounted to a plug-in unit) or as xed connectors (mounted to a subrack via a backplane or direct to the rear of the subrack). Figure 6 illustrates the difference between a front plug-in unit connector and a rear plug-in unit connector. All front plug-in unit free connectors are abbreviated as PFC, all rear plug-in unit free connectors are abbreviated as RFC. The subrack xed connector interfacing to the front plug-in unit, or xed subrack connector, is referred to as FSC. The rear subrack (backplane mounted) connector (rear FSC connector tails are converted to a rear connector by using a shroud) is referred to as RSC.

8. Subrack rear attachment plane

The rear attachment plane is based on the IEC 60603-2 C-type connector and IEC 61076-4-1xx connector with 17 mm tails. The part of the tail that is used as the rear xed connector contact pin shall comply with the performance level of the front xed connector. The user will rely on the RDx inspection dimension to guarantee interchangeability with the appropriate plug-in unit. The designer will utilize the RDc inspection dimension when choosing or designing connectors in compliance with this standard [based on IEC 60603-2 connectors. See IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997)]. Other connectors may require a different RDc inspection dimension (see Table 3). Table 3Rear mounted plug-in unit subrack inspection dimensions (see Figure 7)

9. Rear backplane mounted plug-in unit xed connector relationship

The purpose of the connector shroud is to convert the tails that protrude out of the back of a subrack (via the backplane) into connector pins (a connector) in accordance to IEC 60603-2 (1995-09) [B6] and IEC 610764-1xx (1998-Draft) [B10] (see Figure 8). The shroud spacer and the shroud bottom thickness (which may or may not include the spacer) are either dened by application, or agreed upon between manufacturer and user.

10. Rear subrack connector (backplane mounted) shroud orientation

10.1 Connector shroud orientation
Connectors according to IEC 60603-2 (1995-09) [B6] and IEC 61076-4-1xx (1998-Draft) [B10] have a permanent, molded-in mating orientation (see Figure 9). This molded-in mating orientation denes the RSC shroud position.

11. Backplane bow and support

The number and type of connector contact pins used per plug-in unit will dene the amount of force exerted on the backplane. If the backplane thickness cannot absorb the connector force, then the backplane must be stiffened. The type of stiffener used is dependent on both the positioning and the number of connectors required on the backplane (available space).
NOTEThe insertion/extraction deection/bow of the backplane permitted is to be calculated within the min./max. inspection dimensions of the subrack [see IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997)].

12. Connector performance

Connectors to IEC 60603-2 (1995-09) [B6] and IEC 61076-4-1xx (1998-Draft) [B10] are designed for different performance classes. The rear backplane connector shroud (connector converted by use of shroud and extended pins from the front connector) must meet the mating area requirements (performance class) of the front mounted connector. Since the use of electronics is permitted on the rear mounted plug-in units, the system designer is cautioned when powering these rear mounted plug-in units. If the rear mounted plug-in unit uses the same pin for power as the front mounted plug-in unit, the total current is the sum of the front mounted plug-in unit and the rear mounted plug-in unit.

13. Connector alignment

Space permitting additional connectors without contact pins may be used on a rear mounted plug-in unit to ensure alignment with the connectors.

14. Rear mounted plug-in unit cooling consideration

When rear mounted plug-in units are installed the power dissipation needs to be considered. The construction of the subrack should permit airow management.

15. Front and rear plug-in unit front panel protective ground (See Figures 10 and 11)
15.1 Mechanical design
The plug-in unit front panel protective ground pin shall be based on the alignment pin as described in IEEE Std 1101.10-1996 Clause 6. Pin and receptacle shall be in mated condition.

15.2 Requirement

Annex A
(normative)

Inspection Dimensions for Subracks and Associated Plug-in Units in Accordance with IEEE 1101.1, IEEE 1101.10 and IEEE Draft P1101.11 Using the IEC 61076-4-101 Connector Series
A.1 General overview
A.1.1 Annex scope
This annex may be applied in all elds of electronics where equipment and installations are required to conform to the 482.6 mm (19 in) equipment practice based on IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997), IEEE Std 1101.101996, IEC 60297-3 (1984-01), and IEC 60297-4 (1995-03). This annex covers subracks equipped with front plug-in units in accordance with IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997) and IEEE Std 1101.10-1996, and provides for additional rear mounted plug-in units in the same subrack. A.1.1.1 Choice of connectors This annex refers only to connectors in accordance with IEC 61076-4-101 (1995-05) [B9], with references to IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997) and IEEE Std 1101.10-1996. Other suitable connectors may be mixed with IEC 61076-4-101 connectors on the same backplane. This annex denes only the inspection dimensions required for IEC 61076-4-101 compatible connectors. A.1.1.2 Rear connector shrouds This annex denes the positioning and interface dimensions of compatible connector shrouds.

A.1.2 Annex purpose

The purpose of this annex is to specify dimensions that will ensure mechanical interchangeability of subracks and plug-in units based on IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997), IEEE Std 1101.10-1996, IEEE 1101.11-1998, IEC 60297-3 (1984-01), and IEC 60297-4 (1995-03), using IEC 61076-4-101 based connectors as well as IEC 61587-1 (May 1998-Draft) and IEC 61587-3 (May 1998-Draft) environmental requirements.

A.1.3 Subrack front and rear mounted plug-in units

This annex species additional features required to mount front and rear mounted plug-in units in subracks [based on IEC 60297-3 (1984-01) [B4], IEC 60297-4 (1995-03) [B5], IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997), and IEEE Std 1101.10-1996] that are based on the connector dependent dimensions of the IEC 61076-4-101 connector series. Applications may route user-dened input/output (I/O) through the subrack xed connectors (16 mm tail backplane mounted connectors) out of the rear of the subrack via rear mounted plug-in units. The typically front mounted plug-in unit printed board (PB) sizes (in increments of 60 mm), as dened in IEC 60297-3 (1984-01) [B4], IEC 60297-4 (1995-03) [B5], and IEEE P1101.1 (D1.0, 1997), have been expanded upon in order to make them suitable for rear mounted plug-in unit applications (in increments of 20 mm). See Clause 6 of this standard.
