Surveying the needs of pastoralist communities

ACF responds to open sewage threat in Gaza

ACF has joined a response project to alleviate the risk in hazard areas around sewage lagoons or storm water basins of Gaza, where several children have drowned. When risk areas were mapped out together by the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility and other WASH partners, a preliminary analysis found 35 such risk areas in Gaza, of which 16 are in need of emergency intervention to secure perimeter access. With dedicated funding from the OCHAHRF fund, ACF has undertaken to secure the Qatatwa neighborhood from any further risk caused by the open sewage site in the area.

ACF has partnered with Islamic Relief and Medicos del Mundo (MDM) to assess the needs of marginalized Bedouin and herder villages in the West Bank, which include some of the most vulnerable communities in the oPt. The survey will gather accurate, up-to-date information on the state of basic infrastructure, essential health, education and WASH services, and livelihood support. Teams of surveyors from the three organisations will visit a total of 108 pastoralist communities located in five governates and complete nearly 500 questionnaires.

Do you take WATER for granted? For two billion people around the world, water is a luxury. Watch this ACF video, made with the support of the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO): www.youtube.com/watch?v=64Sr7pnnB7E

Bringing light to Masafer Yatta

ACF Hebron team, working with Hebron University and Comet-Me, recently installed an electrical system for two communities in Masafer Yatta. Funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO), the integrated system combines solar panels with inverters and batteries to produce cheap, renewable energy.

Masafer Yatta residents live under constant threat of expulsion following renewed attempts by the Israeli military to have the entire area declared a firing zone, denying the residents the right to live there.
For more information on firing zones please see the OCHA briefing: The Humanitarian Impact of Israeli-declared Firing Zones in the West Bank | August 2012 at: http://www.och.org/
