An elderly woman living at the
Wheatland Lodge was a victim of
phone fraud recently, adding yet
another crime against seniors to
the toll in Strathmore. Police say
this wasnt your average fraud, it
had been kicked up to another
level. The elderly woman received
a phone call from a man claiming
to be her bank telling her that she
needed to take out cash to help
them catch a criminal.
This male asked her to with-
draw cash. It sounds like he was
sort of portraying like it was go-
ing to be a sting, to catch a bad
guy, said Cnst. Shannon White of
the Strathmore RCMP. What was
different about this fraud, White
says, was that the man asked for
her to meet him with the cash.
We do get telephone fraud
and they ask for money to be
sent or they ask for a money or-
der or theyre looking for credit
card information; what concerned
me the most about this one was
that they were actually asking for
her to meet them in person, said
White.
Its concerning that its been
stepped up to a different level, be-
cause then you wonder, are they
going to rob her? Is there going to
be violence? You always have to
worry about their physical safety.
The woman did not fall for the
scam, but police are concerned
this type of fraud may happen
again.
They prey on seniors who may
be more willing to trust and to
help somebody out. Its always in
the form of to help, said White.
The RCMP urges everyone to
keep on the lookout, to watch out
for scams like these.
Please dont be fooled, please
never meet somebody in person,
never take out money [for them]
said White.

their summer holidays. Each
year there is a different

for the kids, said Carmen
Erison, assistant director of
library services.
With a theme like imagi-
nation, the sky was the limit
and honestly it was wonder-
ful.
The co-coordinators were
Janine Owl Child and Kris-
tine Deisman. Libraries
across Canada used the
theme Imagine this year.
The TD Summer Reading
Program picks the theme
for the program every year.
Weekly themes on the
other hand were chosen by
us, under the Imagine um-
brella, and those we chose
based on what we thought
would work, suggestions
made by TD, and also based
on some pre-planning
phase reading that we did,
said Deisman.
We loved Superhero
Week. During this week
participants learned about
the histories of popular
comic book characters, cre-
ated their own superhero
personas, participated in
superhero training, faced
superhero challenges, and
became certifed superhe-
roes, with a ceremony and
certifcates and everything,
said Owl Child.
During superhero week
the kids were also taught
about real people with su-
per-human abilities, such
as a man immune to the ef-
fects of electricity and ab-
normally strong babies.
Owl Child said she re-
ceived a lot of positive feed-
back from parents about the
teaching element that was
implemented this year.
Every program we ran
we showed kids a Power-
Point or a Prezi.com pre-
sentation that we created
ourselves to teach them
about something related to
the theme of the week, said
Owl Child.
So we taught about su-
perheroes, real pirates and
princesses, different ways
to tell stories, mythological
creatures, fairies, gnomes
and dwarfs, said Deisman.
The kids also learned
about them from a frst na-
tions traditional perspective
as well, and about infuen-
tial people in the world.
Fridays were often flled
with scheduled feld trips
such as one to the Strath-
more Fire Department,
Wheatland EMS and more.
August 24 marked the end
of this years summer read-
ing program, which was a
hit with everyone.

Pennies for MS bring Strathmore near the top spot
After driving by A&W one day and seeing that they were collecting pennies
for mS Bev Slater, with Global Training Centres accounts receivable depart-
ment took a challenge to work to see which department could bring in the
most. A total of $718.95 was raised between all of the departments. With
a goal of $10,000 this year, the money from Global Training Centre brought
the total up to $11,318.95 as of Aug. 24.
This is probably enough to put me at number one in Alberta. Were going
for $15,000 next year, said Will Whatley, Strathmore A&Ws manager. Joni

After a summer storm on Aug. 14 gust-
ed through with winds at approximately
100 km/h residents of Siksika Nation are
asking for aid. The storm caused severe
damage to several families homes, mak-
ing them unlivable. High winds tore the
roofs off houses in the most extreme
cases. The storm was one of a kind, and
with only a thunderstorm watch in ef-
fect, residents of Siksika were caught
unawares by the severity of the storm.
[It was] something Id never seen be-
fore, Ive seen a storm front form poten-
tial tornadoes but thats not what I saw
coming at us, said Tom Little Child, Fire
Chief for Siksika Fire Department, this
came in hard and fast.
People have vacated their homes and
have lost many of their things to the ele-
ments. They have been forced to move
in with family members or have been
assigned temporary accommodations by
the Disaster Services Committee. Most
of these families have lost everything,
explained Little Child.
Unfortunately, here on the reserve
its a little bit different than people liv-
ing outside the reserve (who) may have
insurance. A lot of the homeowners
out here unfortunately do not have in-
surance, so once everythings gone, its
gone, said Little Child.
The band has been working for the
past two weeks, fnding and providing
the necessities for people affected by
this disaster.
The band has done a substantial
[amount], myself along with the Disaster
Services Committee, we have found tem-
porary housing for (people from) the se-
verely impacted homes. So those families
now have a roof over their head. Family
Services and Social Services came forth
big time providing emergency food,
emergency shelter, emergency clothing,
we did that for two weeks, he said.
Its clear with the amount of damage
caused and by the number of families
who have been severely affected ap-
proximately 15 Siksika needs more
help. Wesley Water Chief contacted the
Strathmore Times asking for the help
Siksika needs.
I guess its on behalf of the nation
members who cant speak for them-
selves. Im trying to assist the disaster
committee [to] help the people who
need assistance. I mean, not everybody
would be asking for donations, so I
guess Im speaking on their behalf, said
Water Chief, I see it as my role to assist
in any way that I can.
The Disaster Services Committee in
coordination with Siksika Family Servic-
es Department, White Buffalo/FCSS is
accepting fnancial contributions to help
these families in need as well as general
hygiene products and household items.
The Siksika Fire Hall is accepting dona-
tions during regular business hours. For

On Sept. 17 the Hope Bridges Society will begin
its regular fall programming for the frst time ever.
Coordinator Wanda Reinholdt said the time was right
to bring it to Strathmore now.
Its needed in this community, theres not a lot of
arts programmingand its an opportunity for peo-
ple to take something in their community and get to
know people in their community, said Reinholdt.
The frst set of classes to begin is the traditional
West African drumming classes being taught by Sarah
Lyons. There will be drumming circles and a drum-
ming intensive starting on Sept. 17 for a total of six
weeks. All of the classes will be in the evening begin-
ning at 7 p.m. for the drumming circle and 7:45 for
the intensive.
The frst Thursday of each month will be upcycling,
and the second, third and fourth Thursdays of each
month will be community upcycling.
Upcycling is the reverse of recycling, so what you
get to do is you get to make something beautiful out
of recycled materials. Beautiful and useful, said Re-
inholdt.
The materials will be provided; however, they are
collecting materials, so people can donate art sup-
plies if they so wish but Reinholdt said the upcycling
artist Johanna Jackins also has plenty of materials.
The community upcycling is very different and
very exciting. Were going to be creating a piece of
art for the community with the community out of
recyclable materials. So its a large piece of art that
everyones going to be working on together, said Re-
inholdt.
She said the art will be created at the Hope Bridges
offce and she thinks it will be a piece of art made
out of gift cards.
Other workshops include Sing Your High Notes,
Acrylic Painting and Zentangle & Relax.
Zentangle is a very easy to learn for everyone, re-
petitive art. Whats great about it is you do relax, it
lessens stress and you can relieve pain by doing this
because its repetitive and what it does is it relaxes
your brain. Everyone can learn to do the art but it
looks different depending on who you are, said Re-
inholdt.
The fall programs will run from September until
November, There are workshop session passes and
three month passes available.
So people can for this regular pass here, they can
purchase a spot at a time which is $20 a piece with as
many of these as they want, or they can buy a pack-
age for $200 so 10 for $200, said Reinholdt.
Payment can be taken over the phone now, and Re-
inholdt wants everyone to know the programs are ac-
cessible. They are handicap accessible, transportation
accessible and fnancially accessible, as there is fnan-
cial assistance available if needed. There are also op-
portunities for sponsorship. Reinholdt said they are
looking for workshop location sponsors, participant
sponsors and transportation sponsors.
Anyone looking for more information, or wanting
to partner with the Hope Bridges Society can contact
Wanda Reinholdt at 403-983-3640.

This summer the Strathmore RCMP have been
working with summer students fnishing their
degrees in Criminal Justice. One studies, Caro-
lyn Lavallee, originally from Quebec, who study-
ing Criminal Justice at Mount Royal University,
worked extensively with the Strathmore RCMP to
complete her practicum, the in-the-feld aspect of
her degree. She has now applied to work for the
RCMP and for the Calgary Police Department.
The people [at the Strathmore RCMP] are re-
ally nice and welcoming, said Lavallee. [It was]
a good experience and I got to learn a lot; from
offce work to feld work to the police offce work
I got to do a little bit of everything so that
was a good perspective on those aspects of police
work.
Cnst. Shannon White worked with Lavallee and
explained why she likes to work with summer
students.
I just think theyre so eager for knowledge and
to get out there and see it in practice, its very
exciting for them, said White. I like it because
I can impart some of my knowledge as well and
they get to see it go from theory into practice so
I think its enjoyable for both.
Lavalle certainly learned a lot from her summer
in Strathmore, mostly about what her future job is
really going to be like.
I think [the students] get just a really good
sense of what just an average night would be.
For example Carolyn rode with me one weekend
night and saw the diversity of calls we answer,
anything from armed robberies to a found wallet,
were just across the gamut in general duty, said
White.
You never know what type of day youre going
to have, Lavelle said. Its not the expected.

The storm that ripped
through Southern Alberta
on Aug. 14 will be one peo-
ple will remember for years
to come. Crops were dam-
aged, homes were damaged
and Eagle Lake RV Resort
has had to shut down as a
result of the excessive dam-
age they suffered.
This summer marks 21
years in operation for Leslie
Pringle, owner/operator of
Eagle Lake RV resort. The
storm earlier this month
was the worst she has ever
seen.
I have never seen any-
thing like this and weve
had some doozies. We
tried to run for about a
week, juggling reservations
and we just couldnt do a
good enough job and keep
enough people happy, said
Pringle.
I decided at the end of
the day, no matter what my
insurance coverage if some-
body got killed I wasnt go-
ing to be able to live with
that. Were doing a step-by-
step shutdown as we help
our weekly and monthly
people fnd new places.
Pringle said they werent
comfortable having their
campers in potentially un-
safe conditions, while try-
ing to fx things at the same
time. On Aug. 21 the gates
closed for the season.
Well get this years de-
velopment done and then
well reopen on time next
year bigger and better, said
Pringle.
There are three different
sections in the park that
have had to close due to
damage. Trees still need to
be removed in some sec-
tions and in others there are
cracked trees leaning with a
potential to fall.
We are guessing at this
stage that well have lost
30 trees by the time this is
done, said Pringle.
The roof on the pavil-
ion and the shade pergola,
which is attached to the
pavilion down at the lake,
have also been destroyed.
Four roads have needed to
be repaired, and some of
the maintenance sheds were
damaged.
There was runoff dam-
age from all of the rain that
we got, and then a couple
of them where the feld had
fooded just took out part
of the road, so we had four
roads rebuilt. We had some
damage along the beach
that wasnt immediately ob-
vious, said Pringle.
Were just asking every-
one to understand its for
their safety so we can make
the park better for them
next year. We cant speak
with any absolutes because
we are working with so
many outside agencies that
we just have to work with
everybody to get the work
done. So if people can be
patient well keep them as
informed as we can.
One way Pringle plans to
keep everyone informed is
through the Eagle Lake RV
Resort Facebook page.
As we start to make im-
provements well post pic-
tures, and post progress re-
ports and just let everybody
know whats going on, said
Pringle.
The park will reopen on
May 3, 2013 and Pringle said
everything will look better
than ever when it does.

From the oFFice oF Kevin SorenSon
Crowfoot MP
Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, is announcing that again this year, lo-
cal organizations can apply for funding of projects
that will create or enhance accessibility for people
with disabilities through the Gov-
ernment of Canadas Enabling Ac-
cessibility Fund.
Sorenson says, I always invite
everyone to consider using this
fund to assist those in our riding
with disabilities. These small proj-
ects can include renovations, con-
struction and retroftting of build-
ings, modifcation of vehicles for
community use or enhancements
to make information and commu-
nication technologies more acces-
sible.
The Government of Canada rec-
ognizes the abilities of all Canadi-
ans and is committed to removing
barriers, including here in our Crowfoot riding.
Through the Enabling Accessibility Fund, we can
improve access to facilities, activities and services.
This helps ensure that every one of us can choose
to participate more fully, he continued.
Organizations can submit proposals until Oct. 5,
2012, and can receive up to $50,000 per project.
At least 25 per cent of the total eligible proposed
project costs must come from non-federal govern-
ment sources and must be confrmed at applica-
tion stage.
The Enabling Accessibility
Fund was originally announced
2007 and extended in 2010. The
$45-million commitment includes
a new mid-sized component to
try and expand the use of the
Fund. Since 2008, over 800 proj-
ects have been awarded funding.
Sorenson concludes, Eligible
activities include things like: con-
structing an interior or exterior
ramp; installing wider doors or
automated door openers; build-
ing an accessible washroom; and
more. As a bonus, this effort also
helps create jobs in construction
and renovation in smaller com-
munities.
To fnd out how to apply for funding or for
more information about the Fund, visit www.hrs-
dc.gc.ca/disability.

Re The Town of Strathmore beautifcation project
In response to a recent article stating the town
wants to revitalize the downtown area. I have to
agree that something should be done but I have
several concerns with this current proposal. It ap-
pears there its only one block that is being looked
at. Third avenue needs improvements and not just
one block.
Firstly putting a median in the center of street will
cost more for upkeep of snow removal and street
cleaning, as well as not working for any future pa-
rades or street festivals.
Angle parking has its issues but by changing it
and losing 37 spaces is a deterrent for residents and
visitors (people will not park and walk, especially if
picking up items or in the winter).
The current benches should be bringing in rev-
enue from advertising and could be replaced over
time.
There is talk of becoming a city and I would like
to see some long term plans, (10 or 20 years) for the
downtown area. Perhaps we will need public tran-
sit, which will take away even more parking and a
median would probably not work. I would like to
see a couple building (3 or 4 stories) that would
be for offces with underground parking and off the
street parking beside the building and the main foor
for retail. This could bring new businesses to Strath-
more.
Past mistakes (in my opinion) are pink sidewalks,
they fade, and any repairs will make it like a patch-
work quilt. The clock, which was recently added,
takes away a parking space (this has had very little
positive feed back, as it is not working most of the
time, and hard to read).
Businesses are moving out of downtown even
though rent is less expensive, so I believe there
needs to be more emphasizes put on attracting busi-
ness than spending money on unnecessary esthet-
ics for now (dont forget this is my money as a tax
payer).
The town needs to look at a bigger picture and
think ahead for future plans and needs.

Fule for Thought
My parents, like countless others, experienced the
loss of a child. In their case, they had to deal with
two baby deaths, before my brother and I came
along. They were new to Canada, and had diffcul-
ties with the English language. I was always told
about each, and the circumstances of their deaths,
until they became a natural part of some of our
conversations.
Joe Jr. born frst in October of 1955, died during
a diffcult delivery. I was told the doctor who was
summoned, had come from a party. It was a diffcult
forceps delivery, and my brother died. Some of the
nurses consoled my parents and said they could
pursue legal action, but that it would be diffcult
to get all of the staff to speak out. There was much
fear, and with my parents poor English, nothing
was done. They were left to their grief, the same
way as many new parents.
This was in 1955, and our town was little, with a
small hospital. There were no funeral homes, and
it was stormy and cold that day. This next part is
diffcult to describe for me, as I saw the hurt on my
dads face when he retold it to me 40 years after the
event. My dad had to drive to Banff with his dead
baby son in a wooden box, in the back seat! When
I asked how he could do that, how could he have
handled that, he just said, it had to be done
there were no special cars or staff to do this.
I can only imagine the pain of that, and also for
my mother, knowing how badly her new family
had been damaged by this. To think that your new
son has died, and that your husband is driving him
away for funeral arrangements, must have been
horrendous for a young mother. Im sure there are
many older families that have similar stories of how
devastating a loss of a baby or child can be.
I cant imagine losing one child, but to have a
second baby die AFTER the frst, must be absolutely
horrible. Many families have these tragedies, and
sadly, they become part of the families histories
and stories. My parents second son to die, lost his
life after two days of battling to live. John was born
with a defective heart, but not enough could be
done in 1957 to save him, either. There were no
surgeons in our town, no STARS helicopter to airlift
him to Calgary. They tried to stabilize him, but it
wasnt to be, and he died. The two losses for my
parents were horribly sad, and they were also so
different. One boy died quickly in birth, one arrived
safely, with Im sure a great feeling of relief, only
to have that relief turned to fear, and then sadness.
Im not sure how a couple recovers from these
losses. Im not sure how a couple itself, could not
be destroyed by these deaths. Yet, my parents tried
a third and fourth time, and my brother Gary and
I were born, two years apart. My parents always
spoke of Joe Jr. and John. They became the older
brothers my mom said would have stuck up for me,
protect me, and babysit me. I would try to imagin-
ing how cool it would be to have three big brothers!
At least a couple of times each month, our family
would visit their graves. It became a family ritual
and a way (Im sure) for my parents to have some
kind of tie to them. My dad even had lilacs planted
there for them. The lilacs still keep growing and
blooming, even though its more than 50 years since
my brothers died. I used to wonder at the tiny size
of their graves with the elaborate cement slab stat-
ing their birth and death dates.
Nowadays, we dont often visit their graves, and
my brother has long since moved to Vancouver.
I even have trouble going to my parents graves.
However, when my family does visit, I, as a father,
am hit with the enormity of my parents losing two
babies. To have held them and lost them must have
been so painful. I never knew these babies, so its
diffcult to feel the loss and mourn them. Yet Joe Jr.
and John, my unknown brothers, deserve to have
someone remember them, to miss them as babies
who once lived, but could not, for very long. Some-
one should mourn them, someone should think of,
and pray for them. I think its time we visited their
little graves again, and re-introduce my kids to their
lost uncles if only they COULD have been.

Once again members of the Glei-
chen and District Community Associa-
tion are feeding people to help raise
funds. Previous fundraising had been
to repair the kitchen at the community
hall, and now there are more repairs
needed.
Well were fundraising for two dif-
ferent things, frst of all to fx the fre
escapes. We have put in for grants from
a variety of places to put in steps on
the north side and south side of the
hall to make sure that people can get
out, said Doris Lindman with the Glei-
chen and District Community Associa-
tion Committee.
Now our next fundraising that were
working on is for the roof, the roof has
major problems. It hadnt been dealt
with over the years so it is leaking so
we have to have a structural engineer
come in to tell us what all needs to
be done and then I have to apply for
grants for that.
In order to apply for grants you
have to have money, so we are putting
on concerts and dinners and what ever
else we can think of to get grants.
On Sept. 15 anyone interested is in-
vited to enjoy a roast beef dinner and
a concert put on by Saskia and Dar-
rel, who have toured with Juno Award
winner Gary Fjellgaard. They were
awarded Top Folk /Roots Album in
Holland last year, nominated for Artist,
Songwriter of the Year, and Male Vocal-
ist of the year by SCMA, received Top
5 Peoples choice awards, and remain
perennial favorites on CBC, CKUA and
Indie folk/roots charts in Europe and
Community Radio Stations throughout
Canada and the US.
For $30 theyre getting a roast beef
dinner plus a concert, which seems
darn reasonable to me, said Lindman.
In order to apply for a government
grant 50 per cent of the money needs
to be raised. There will be plenty of
fundraising ventures taking place in
Gleichen over the next couple of years
to try to meet that goal.
I wouldnt be at all surprised if it
took us about two years to raise the
money for the roof, then maybe we can
sit back for a little bit, I dont know,
said Lindman, laughing.
Right now the main focus of the
committee is to see the centre fxed;
afterwards they will begin focusing on
other projects.
On Sept. 15 the doors open at 5
p.m., dinner begins at 6 p.m. followed
by the show at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are
$30 per person and are more than half
sold out. Anyone interested can contact

Standard Firefghters showed off their
fre engine on Saturday night to a great
crowd of kids and adults alike at their
BBQ beef fundraiser for their new Fire
Department.
After a great meal of BBQ beef
cooked by the Standard Lions Associa-
tion, they held both a silent auction,
which brought in $4,985, and a rousing
live auction which brought in just over
$14,500. Cody Hayes from Strathmore
graciously volunteered his time and
ability in leading the auction to help
with the cause.
Many community members and kids
came out for the event and there was a
good representation of neighboring fre
department members from Carseland,
Rockyford and Rosebud in attendance.
The largest item sold in the live auc-
tion sold was pipe that Tervita (formerly
known as Normcan) brought in just over
$5,800. Firefghter Mark Duguay won
the 50/50 guess of how much money
would be brought in between the silent
and live auction and he proudly went
home with half of the dollars raised in
the ticket sales.
Small communities rely on the volun-
teer frefghters and EFRT (Emergency
First Response Team) to be the frst on
the scenes for any event whether it be
fre or medical in and around the com-
munities in which they are placed. Many
of the communities pool their man re-
sources (whether they are town or ru-
ral) for larger events and it is nice to
see that they come together on matters
such as these and support one another
in keeping their members and commu-
nities safe.
For more information about joining
the volunteers please send your re-
quests to cao@standardab.ca or www.

Under the Mango Tree is inspired by true events
in the life of Rosebud School of the Arts student
Lennette Randall. The play, which will run Aug.
31 to Sept. 2, will be held outside behind the
Rosebud church. Randall said there is a tree in a
really good spot behind the Rosebud church and
there is also a labyrinth around the tree.
The whole thing revolves around a tree. When
I was in my second year of school we were asked
to do some research assignments on different
kinds of theatre and I realized I didnt know
much about African theatre, said Randall.
After doing some research she found in the
early century in African villages story time was a
beloved time and members of the village would
gather around a tree located in the center of the
village and tell each other stories.
Randall herself grew up on story time when
she lived in Sierra Leone and said stories would
be passed along from her great grandma to her
grandma, aunt, uncles and cousins.
I realized I was forgetting some of those sto-
ries. Over the last couple of years I lost a few
memories of my family, my aunt, my grandma
and my grandpa, said Randall.
So I wanted to string together all these differ-
ent African stories that I remembered and share
it with the community to say this is where Im
coming from, these are the stories I grew up on.
I didnt remember as much of it as Id hoped and
that was a little disappointing.
One morning Randall woke up and began writ-
ing down as much as she could remember, which
is when she came up with her female character
Twyla-Angel. Twyla, played by Randall, is a the-
atre student who decides to fnd herself a tree
where she can sit and re-enact African folk tales.
Once she fnds a tree that she likes and claims
as her own, she fnds out it had been previously
claimed by a male student Danny (Conrad Be-
lau) who she dislikes. It turns into a battle when
neither is willing to share nor give up the prized
spot.
Eventually they just fnd a way of sharing it,
said Randall.
Originally Randall had written the script for in-
doors because there are a number of lighting ef-
fects to go along with the show, but being a busy
time of year it was a little diffcult to fnd every-
thing she would need to pull it together.
She had panicked a little at the thought of run-
ning it outside initially but eventually found her
way back out there. Being outside has cut down
a lot of production elements that Randall would
have had to worry about if the performance had
been inside.
Its actually a really nice space, Im really
pleased with it and the tree turned out to be very
fexible and easy to climb, said Randall.
Under the Mango Tree is Randalls fnal student
project with Rosebud School, though she still has
a few things to take care of before graduating.
She is hoping to join the Alberta theatre world,
and hopes to one day fnd a way to blend African
theatre with western theatre.
Under The Mango Tree runs Aug. 31 at 3:30
p.m., Sept. 1 with two shows at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
and the fnal show will be Sept. 2 at 1 p.m.
The production takes place in an outdoor set-
ting in Rosebud, behind the Church near the
Labyrinth Tree. Tickets are $12. For more infor-
mation either call 403-820-5570 or email african-
mangotree.com.

to please make a compassionate donation to the victims who
suffered great loss and as a result need your assistance.

The Strathmore Stampede may not have had
midway rides, but that doesnt mean they arent
in the very near future for Strathmore. At the
Strathmore and District Ag. Society grounds
there will be the frst ever Funtastic Fall Fair,
Sept. 7 to 9.
We are happy to announce Canuck Amuse-
ments will be returning to help the Strathmore
& District Agricultural Society welcome the kids
back to school. Watch your childs backpack for
a free ride coupon, said Jessica Hall with the
Ag. Society.
You will also be able to pre-purchase unlimit-
ed rides for a day at Sobeys or the Ag offce until
September 6 and in doing so you will save $10.
When the opportunity arose to be able to bring
Canuck Amusements to town for a fall fair, the
Ag. Society staff jumped on it.
Leading up to the Funtastic Fall Fair is def-
nitely exciting. However, my excitement will be
better measured throughout the weekend as the
community strolls through the fair and leave
with smiles on their faces, said Hall.
There will be six games for the kids to play,
and 11 rides featuring a 102 foot high sling shot.
The Ag. Societys mission to be the leading
provider of agricultural and recreational experi-
ences to enhance the quality of life for our com-
munity, said Hall.
In adding more events and activites to our
annual calendar we are hoping to achieve this.
However, we will only be able to make this an
annual event with the support of the community.
These special events no matter the scale always
rely on the community. Whether you choose to
participate as a spectator, volunteer, or a corpo-
rate partner working together will determine the
success of an event, said Hall.
The midway will be open from 3 p.m. to 11
p.m. Sept. 7, from 12 noon until 11 p.m. on Sept.
8 and 12 noon until 9 p.m. on Sept. 9. On Friday
night, Sept. 7, at 10 p.m. there will be freworks.
On Saturday there will be a youth dance from 6
p.m. to 11 p.m. For more information call 403-
934-5811.

The name SOBOL , which was Bobs grandfa-
thers name, originated in the Ukraine, whereas his
grandmothers family originated in Poland. Both
grandparents moved to Montreal in the early 1900s.
Ginas father was born in Italy, and her mothers
family were long time residents of The Gaspe in
Quebec.
Both Bob and Gina were born
in Montreal - Bob in 1954, the
second youngest of six children,
and Gina in 1955, the youngest
of four children. Although they
lived in the same area, and went
to the same high school, they
didnt meet until after graduat-
ing.
One night they were each with
their own groups of friends, in a
pub in Montreal, and this is when they fnally met.
I was told that the romance blossomed from there,
and they were married on May 28, 1977. This mar-
riage has produced one daughter, two sons, and one
grand-daughter.
Bob joined the RCMP in 1974. After graduating
from the RCMP Depot in Regina, he spent two years
in Ottawa, before being posted to Cardston, Alta.
where he and Gina were married. After just over
fve years there, he moved to Sherwood Park, Alta.
for 8.5 years, then to Fairview, Alta. for 12 years af-
ter being promoted to Corporal. In 2000, he was
promoted to Sergeant, moved to Calgary, and took
over the Southern Alberta Traffc Services division,
where he spent the next three years, before retiring
in 2003.
Gina graduated as a Registered Nurse in Montreal
in 1977, and after a long career in nursing, is now
the Case Manager at Sagewood Continuing Care
Centre in Strathmore.
After Bob retired from the RCMP, they built and
opened The Boulevard Cafe at
Crystal Ridge on April 1, 2003.
A few years later, he was invited
back to the RCMP as a civilian
employee, conducting recruiting
and security interviews, so they
sold the Boulevard Cafe. Bob
continues to work in this posi-
tion with the RCMP.
As you know, Bob is a mem-
ber of Town Council, and as
such serves on many Boards and
Committees. He is a director with the new Strath-
more Regional Arts Collective Society, and assists
with Strathmore Lions as required. When required,
Gina assists him in different projects.
When I enquired what had brought them to
Strathmore, Bob replied I used to come here on
business when I was with the RCMP, and I really
liked this town. It has a lot of character and I like
the feel of the place. It is clean, open, and has much
going for it. The average age is lowering here, which
is changing the community. Strathmore is a great
place to live.

Councillors had many questions
about the Town of Strathmores with-
drawal from WFCSS. There were ques-
tions as to where the new agency would
be housed and how the program would
operate. What staffng would remain in
place for which programs? Whether
there would be service overlap and
confusion over funding and service ter-
mination dates. The county will suffer
a budget cut for the service from the
move. Funding is distributed on a per
capita basis by median income. They
questioned why the town did not give
notice at the regional meeting, when
it was held one week before the an-
nouncement.
No reason was given for pulling
out, said Councillor Ben Armstrong.
There were questions regarding
Strathmores desire to remain in the Re-
gional Partnership in light of some of
the towns recent decisions.
Council asked staff to provide them
with copies of the current funding bud-
get agreement and the programs cur-
rently offered. It was decided to defer
the matter until they had more informa-
tion and after the WFCSS meeting that
would be held on August 22.
Gleichen cemetery
Ratepayers are looking at who is re-
sponsible for the Gleichen cemetery
operation and upkeep.
Staff toured and photographed the
cemetery to see what issues might arise
in the area.
It hadnt been looked after for years.
The Lions Club, in the mid 60s, took
the project on. The Lions Club has
been mowing the grass ever since, said
Councillor Ken Sauve.
Pictures showed displaced head-
stones and gravesites that need work.
Sauve said that there is a lot of hesita-
tion by the community service organi-
zation to take on repairs for a project
like that. The county previously took
on the Rosebud cemetery renovations.
It was suggested that Community En-
hancement funds could be accessed to
pay for the renovations or an applica-
tion made for a government grant.
Council requested staff consult with
The Lions Club and determine their
commitment level towards the ceme-
tery, then investigate costs and services
surrounding renovation of the Gleichen
cemetery and develop a suggested poli-
cy for ongoing maintenance.
Water toWer fundinG secured
Historic restoration funding of
$84,500 is secured to start renovation
of the Gleichen water tower. The coun-
ty will match the amount with hopes
that the Western Diversifcation Fund
will reimburse their amount and pro-
vide the extra $31,000 needed to com-
plete the project.
The spokesperson for the WDF stat-
ed there should be no problem with
securing the funds as the project was
a perfect ft for the funds parameters,
said Dave Churchill, Transportation and
Infrastructure Manager.
Churchill spoke with the contractor
from Blue Bronn, who agreed to hold
last years price for the project. He said
there would be no need for a new ten-
der, as they were the only company
who bid and had the steeplejack exper-
tise to do the job.
liGhts to level loiterinG
Councillor Alice Bland asked for
streetlight placement near the old teach-
ing housing in Cluny, to deter negative
behavior occurring in the hamlet.
They have been damaging the hall,
knocking fences down and painting
graffti, said Bland.
She said there have also been some
break-ins. The treeline in the area
shades activity from the rest of the
hamlet and she felt lights would deter
some of the negative activity.
She had contacted local RCMP, but
said their initiatives would take time to
implement. There is some speculation
that punitive measures in Gleichen are
moving the negative element to other
areas like Cluny.
There is also a request by residents to
move the playground equipment from
the Cluny water park area to the Com-
munity Centre, as the area has become
unsafe for the children because of the
negative element.
Council requested that staff investi-
gate the details of installing the lights
and work with the hamlets residents to
move the playground equipment.
carseland Park Plan
Darlene Hooge, representative from
Community in Bloom for Carseland,
brought plans to council for .74 acres
donated to the town by the county.
The site will be named Downey Cen-
tennial Park, to honour the original
landowner.
The area is to commemorate our
Centennial which will occur in 2014,
honour the Downey family name, rec-
ognize and celebrate the history and
strong agricultural roots in the area,
and showcase the popular tourist at-
traction of fshing, said Hooge.
The park suggestions include a post
and rail fence, a walkway, an antique
farm machine and a trout-fshing mon-
ument. There will be a Memory Forest
where trees can be donated to com-
memorate those who have passed away,
or new babies born. Benches, a picnic
table, garbage containers and upgraded
fagpoles will also be installed. Signage
will make tribute to Carselands 100th
Anniversary and local service agencies.
County council deals with long list
of issues after coming back from
a short summer break
CPR, to separate the park from the rail
tracks, will put up a new chain link
fence.
Fundraising initiatives and grant
money will be applied for to fnance
the park.
Hats off to you for taking this initia-
tive and cleaning Carseland up a bit,
said Councillor Don Vander Velde.
Council, pending staff research into
insurance parameters and meeting
county guidelines, deferred fnal ap-
proval for the park.

Rosebuds artistic director will be
relinquishing his role for the fall per-
formance of Tuesdays with Morrie. In-
stead of directing the production, Mor-
ris Ertman will be performing in it as
Morrie Schwartz, starring alongside his
colleague and friend David Snider who
will play Mitch Albom.
The factual tale follows the story of
overly busy Mitch and his former teach-
er Morrie Schwartz who lives life to the
fullest. Albom hadnt kept in touch with
Schwartz, his former college professor,
after graduating like he was promised.
One day Albom heard that Schwartz
had been diagnosed with Lou Geh-
rigs disease (ALS). He set out to visit
just once, and what followed was life
changing for Albom.
Something that has occurred to me
is in Anne of Green Gables I was kind
of playing the Morrie role as the older
man thats kind of feeble and in his
last days and kind of pouring himself
into Anne. Now, in a different story, Im
kind of on the other side of it, Im the
student, said Snider.
Morris and I have been friends as
well as colleagues for a long time and
in fact the depths of our friendship is
really kind of underpins a lot of what
we do and the short answer is to say
Morris and I have had many of these
conversations that Mitch and Morrie
have.
The connection is deep and in some
ways it feels very natural. Relating to
Morris is the one thing I thought Im not
going to work on, because I think when
we get there well know what to do.
While talking about the show several
people suggested Ertman should play
Morrie. He said he read through oth-
er actors for the play not thinking too
much of it. Finally Dave and Morris and
director Paul Muir sat down and read
through it one evening. Ertman said he
decided to leave it in Muirs hands, tell-
ing Muir if he thought he (Ertman) was
right for the role then he would con-
sider it. Ertman said it just happened to
be that at this time in Rosebud he just
happens to be the person to say those
words.
He (Morrie) is a pretty interesting
and wonderful human being. Its kind
of amazing that one mans life could
have inspired what it did in Mitch Al-
bom and then for him to turn around
and write the story and have over 14
million people moved by this story is
pretty remarkable, said Ertman.
I think whats wonderful about play-
ing Morrie is the depth and size of his
love. Not only his love for humanity
and for Mitch but his love of life.
Tuesdays with Morrie runs Sept. 7 to
Oct. 20. Tickets can be purchased at
Rosebud Theatre, by calling 1-800-267-
7553, or online www.rosebudtheatre.

On Aug. 28 Strathmore High School (SHS) opened its doors a few days early to welcome the new-
est international students to the school for their frst semester. The Golden Hills School Division
(GHSD) was happy to welcome the students from around the world. They took part in a two-day
orientation, were fed lunch, and even played a few games like dodge ball and a treasure hunt. SHS
and GHSD want to thank all of the sponsors, staff and volunteers who helped host put everything
together.

Times Reporter
Rob Litwinski, General Manager for Hockey
Alberta, offcially announced that Strathmore
Minor Hockey and the Town had won the bid to
host the 2013 and 2014 Alberta Cup.
We dont leave the bids out and just kind of
look at them and make a quick decision. We al-
ways have interaction with the communities,
said Litwinski during the Aug. 28 announcement.
In this case we felt that of the bids made,
Strathmore was the place to be for the next two
years.
The Alberta Cup is a premier hockey bantam
hockey event, focused on players aged 14. Its
a well-scouted event, with estimates coming in
that there will be 150 scouts with many com-
ing from the Western Hockey League (WHL).
The competition also provides an opportunity
for administrators, coaches, trainers and referees
to be evaluated for future positions within the
Team Alberta U16 Provincial Team. The provin-
cial team will also compete in the U16 Western
Canada Challenge Cup in 2014, and eventually
leads into the Team Pacifc U17 program.
Its going to be huge. We really think its go-
ing to go a long way to showcase Strathmore, to
show that we are a real destination. People have
always known that Strathmore is very good in
sports, but now we can showcase our town, and
the facilities that we have and have improved on.
I think its going to be great for the town, said
Town Councillor Pat Fule.
This is amazing for our town and amazing
that minor hockey and Strathmore have worked
so hard to make this bid come true. When they
brought it forward to council we were just so
impressed that they were willing to put all the
work into bringing an event like this Alberta
Cup to our town.
Fule feels this is going to send a message to
younger hockey players, letting them know if
they work hard then they too could one day play
in the Alberta Cup.
Work has already begun to prepare for the
2013 Alberta Cup, which will be held in April,
and there is still plenty more to go.
In total were probably going to have a major
committee of twelve people which will branch
off and work outside of that. Were expecting to
need close to 90 volunteers to make this event
happen, said Strathmore Minor Hockey Presi-
dent Wayne Hansen.
Were absolutely ecstatic, I mean this is just
being announced today but in the rumour mill
you know with it being out there that we were
bidding on it, weve had tons of response from
people that are more than interested in being
involved. Were excited.
These are the top 14-year-olds that the prov-
ince of Alberta has to offer. Short of an injury
theres not a kid who wont be here. As a 14-year-
old, this is where you want to be because this is
your chance to be seen by the Western Hockey
League scouts. If thats the direction that youre
looking at going if you want to play junior
hockey you need to be here because they need
to see you.
In March the Alberta Cup Program begins with
close to 1,000 players trying out in their respec-
tive zone camps. Hansen said he would love to
see 10 or 12 kids from our draw zone make this
team, and said he doesnt think that would be
such a stretch.
Each of the 160 athletes playing in the Alberta
Cup will also be competing for one of the 80
invites to the U16 Male Provincial Camp in July.

Strathmore native Jayse Wilson is packing his bags
to compete in the 2012 Prospect Series Aug. 31-Sept.
3 in Winnipeg, Man.
The 14-year-old was named to Team Alberta for
the series, which will compete against the top play-
ers from Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
The second baseman was a little concerned that
he hadnt made the team, but when the phone call
fnally did come in he was ecstatic.
It was pretty spectacular actually because at frst I
didnt think I was going to make it and then I got the
phone call that said I made the team and I was just
shocked and overwhelmed, said Wilson.
This year now marks seven years since Wilson frst
hit the feld. Over that time he has stuck to the in-
feld whether it be as a baseman or shortstop.
At the beginning of the year I wasnt even going
to play because of an injury and then Daren Kennett
told me that he would play me at frst base until I
was rehabilitated, said Wilson.
Daren Kennett pushed him through to keep play-
ing this year and Wilson says he is the greatest coach
he has ever had.
He just keeps it simple and teaches us step by
step, he always keeps working on us even if we get
down on ourselves. We take it serious during prac-
tice now because we know that if we dont take it
serious were not going to win, said Wilson.
My auntie (Kim Wilson) played for the Team Can-
ada team for fastball and won athlete of the year for
all of Canada, thats what really made me stick with
it. But also my grandma and grandpa and mom and
dad just pushing me through to keep playing.
The Brett Lawrie and Toronto Blue Jays fan said he
hopes to get a scholarship and one day play in the
bigs, stating he doesnt care which team he plays for,
as long as he gets to play.

natural choice.
This weekend
Aug. 31 to Sept.

with team Al-
berta.

On Sept. 8 all three Strath-
more Spartans teams will be
playing their frst home games
of the season. This triple-
header will see the peewee
team face off against Olds at
11:00 am, the bantam Spartans
against Stettler at 1:30 p.m. and
the senior team against Taber
at 4 p.m. All three teams are
chomping at the bit to get this
season started, as theyve start-
ed practices and are ready to
show their skills on the feld.
We started up practices on
the 20th so we have one week
under our belt. We started up
(some) things, picked up a little
bit of conditioning and stuff,
said Carl Seafoot, coach of the
senior team. Seafoot said the
team was looking good after
the frst week of practice, and
theyre excited for the second
week, and to be able to put
some plays into action.
Plans for this week are kind
of to get into the play books
and running some play reps
like that, said Seafoot.
The team has also had a good
turnout this year, with a com-
bination of old talent and new.
The team looks pretty good,
good mixture of players, got
some new guys in there, got
some of the old guys back, its
looking pretty good in that re-
spect, said Seafoot. The one
change the seniors will see this
year is their opponents. Theyve
been moved to a new league,
and are now facing teams such
as Medicine Hat and Taber.
The bantam team is desper-
ately hoping for a win on the
Sept. 8 to start this season off
on the right foot after two un-
successful seasons with few
wins. Coach Doug Klauck is
new to the Bantam team this
year and sees playoff potential
if the team can keep their inju-
ries down.
We have a team that can
compete this year, and weve
just got to stay healthy and
keep the numbers up on the
feld, said Klauck. After coach-
ing peewee for eight years
Klauck thought it was time for
a change.
The kids are a little older,
the game itself is faster, the
kids hit harder, its going to be
a challenge for me, its some-
thing Im looking forward to,
said Klauck.
I hope we can change things
around for these boys, said
Klauck.
Since Klauck has moved up
from coaching peewee, theres
been some new coaching in
that program as well. Chuck
Holloway has stepped in as
head coach with assistant coach
Brad Middlemiss, who stepped
down from assisting with the
bantam team to help with pee-
wee and is facing some chang-
es in coaching style.
Its really the size and the
maturitysometimes you have
to have a lot more patience
with this group of kids, said
Middlemiss.
The team has been practicing
since August 18 and the play-
ers theres over 30 are look-
ing forward to the game and
a chance to hit the feld. The
peewee coaches have some
pretty simple, but very impor-
tant goals for this season.
Just to see them having fun,
to see them get out, [and] to
have them see a little bit of suc-
cess, said Middlemiss. All three
Spartan teams cant wait to see
the home crowd cheering them
on at their frst game of the sea-
son.
Its going to be great for the
kids, said Middlemiss.

The roar of motorcycles will be heard
flling the streets on Sept. 8 as the sev-
enth annual Harleys and Hot Rods pok-
er run starts up. Proceeds raised from
the event are donated to the Childrens
Wish Foundation and this year will see
over $100,000 raised from over the past
seven years.
Everything begins at 8:30 a.m. in front
of Underground Performance with a
toonie breakfast and a show and shine.
From there players in the poker run
will be off to begin collecting their pok-
er hand. This year one of the biggest
new things is the event has gone from a
one-day event to two days.
Well be surpassing $100,000 this
year for the Childrens Wish Foundation,
thats for sure, said Derrick Anderson,
owner of Strathmore Pawn and Collect-
Annual Childrens Wish Foundation
fundraiser to break $100K
ables.
Ive been on board since day one.
Its always getting a little bit bigger, a
little bit better. Now weve moved it into
a two-day so well defnitely be able to
have a lot more fun for the weekend.
It was hard to get everything into a
one day event because theres just so
much. So instead of doing a little bit of
everything, were going to do full events
on certain things.
As the poker players fnishing round-
ing up their hands they will head to
AAB Steel, located 10 minutes east of
Strathmore. On Saturday there will be a
charity bike/car wash, a silent auctions
and two live classic rock bands, The
Kids and Putting On the Foil.
It is adult only on the Saturday but
on the Sunday kids are welcome, well
have some games, said Anderson.
Along with the games there will also
be the bike rodeo and a number of other
events on Sunday, Sept. 9. Typically the
poker run is held in June, but this year
things were changed up. One of the rea-
sons for moving the run into Septem-
ber and out of the summer is so that
the kids are back in school, and people
are back from holidays. The hope is the
new date will help draw more people
into the two-day fundraising event.
Bring your campers, bring your tents,
were supplying the good time all youve
got to do is show up, said Anderson.
Without the continued support of the
community, the sponsors and the par-
ticipants it would be doubtful that the
annual event would have taken off as
well as it has.
We want to thank all our sponsors
and participants who have helped us out
over the past seven years, and helped
turn this poker run into what it is, said
Anderson.
For $40 people can participate in the
poker run, will get a T-shirt and get into
the party. For anyone who doesnt want
to ride on the poker run but wants to
take part in everything else, its only $20.
Camping for the weekend is $20 and An-
derson said if people want to head over
early and set up thats fne.
There is a shuttle service available to
Strathmore, so if you dont want to stay
out there and youre drinking there is a
shuttle service, said Anderson.
There is also the option to pre-register
at Underground Performance, 403-901-
1000, or Strathmore Pawn and Collect-
ables, 403-901-1100.
Anderson said he is hoping to see 200
to 250 people come out for the week-
end, or even just for one day.

- Dave, Dawn and Linda and Brenda Knight and her
decorating crew. Everyone enjoyed Janet Bolingers
Gleichen Community Choir and their creative songs.
Many thanks to our four daughters Nancy, Jill, Beth
& Becky, who with the co-operation of Pastor Dawn
Nelson, orchestrated the surprise of the day with our
renewal of vows. David Drummond, Ralph Tiede
and Jenny Schumanns words were much
appreciated as have the many visits, phone calls
and cards of friends near and far.
Tanks to the Strathmore Times for their interest.

Its been two years,
Since youve been gone.
So many things have happened,
Since you were called away.
So many things to share with you,
Had you been left to stay.
Everyday in some small way
Memories of you come our way.
Though absent, you are never near,
Still missed, loved and always dear.
Always in our hearts
