Armthorpe Academy

Prospectus 2012 - 2013

Welcome
Armthorpe Academy is a thriving and welcoming 11-18 school which is firmly committed to the principle other people matter. We constantly strive to offer a well-ordered, safe and purposeful working environment for all members of the school community. Our expectations of students are very high, both in terms of their progress and their behaviour. In particular, we expect them to invest in their own learning, and we encourage them to enjoy and make a positive contribution to the wider life of the school. They, in turn, can expect from us the highest possible quality of teaching, care and support. We are always pleased to welcome visitors to Armthorpe Academy. If you would like to arrange a visit to see at first hand our commitment to developing high achieving and responsible students, then do not hesitate to contact us.

School Values
Our values define the ethos which we are seeking to establish at Armthorpe Academy, and the qualities and attitudes which we want to encourage and develop in all members of our community. We have developed a clear statement which is intended to guide and influence all aspects of the life of the school.

RESPECT We insist upon the simple principle other people matter; all school members are expected to show acceptance and tolerance towards others, as well as recognition of their rights. AMBITION We expect all school members to aim high, to respond positively to our high expectations and to make the most of their talents.

PRIDE We want all school members to be proud of their achievements and proud of the school, and to show this through the positive contribution which they make to its success and its reputation.

RESPONSIBILITY We expect all school members to be responsible and to take responsibility for their conduct and their work in the school.

School Community
REWARDS AND SANCTIONS
We believe that every learner can succeed at Armthorpe Academy; we want to celebrate success and improvement, building a culture of achievement which is both inclusive and self-sustaining. Students who uphold our values and comply with expectations regarding learning and behaviour will enjoy a wide range of rewards which celebrate and share their achievements with their parents and the wider school community. When behaviour is inappropriate, students can expect to be treated in a manner which is firm, fair, reasonable and consistent. Our approach is very much determined by the principle of individual choice. Students are given opportunities to learn from their mistakes and to receive the support which is necessary for them to be successful and valued members of the school community. At the same time, they are also made aware that we will use a range of sanctions, if they deliberately and consistently challenge our expectations.

STUDENT SUPPORT
At the heart of our student welfare system is the form tutor. Through daily contact with their groups, and interest in their well-being, tutors are ideally placed to provide the guidance and support which all students need, if they are going to be happy and successful in school. Form tutors are expected to develop positive and productive relationships with the students in their charge. They must also acquire a detailed knowledge of home circumstances, specific needs and learning progress and priorities. We have developed a range of opportunities for students to influence those aspects of school provision which directly affect them. Students are routinely consulted on matters such as school policies, events, environment, and learning and teaching. Wherever necessary, additional specialist support is provided to ensure that all students are fully integrated into the school community, including: learning and behavioural support; support for students with physical disabilities; support for students for whom English is not their first

PARTNERSHIP
We recognise the significant role that parents and carers have to play in supporting the work of the school. It is only with their support for our values, home /school agreement, and challenging expectations of all learners that the school will establish and sustain a culture of achievement. One of our most important responsibilities is to form a productive partnership in which parents and carers feel a sense of confidence, involvement and pride in the school. We both seek and value their views, so that they see themselves as genuine stakeholders who are able to support us, as well as promote the school in the best possible light in the community.
