Activity 1: Online Video & Discussion

Lets have a look at the video Clare thought she knew which explores a teenage girls experience as a target of grooming to explain the importance of unwanted contact online. Lets discuss the following questions in relation to the video 1) How old do you think Clare might be? 2) Do you think lots of people of your age would be vulnerable to the experience Clare had? 3) What sort of person do you think Clare might be? Why do you think this? Give reasons for your opinion. 4) How do you think this man set about gaining Clares her trust so she felt safe to meet him? 5) How might Clare have been feeling about herself? 6) If a person feels vulnerable, sad, frightened or lonely, who are some real life people who might be able to help? 7) Does this person, or any other person, have the right to deceive Clare? Why not? 8) Do you think that both boys and girls can be targeted by this type of behaviour? 9) Why do you think this man was able to deceive Clare? Do you think problems like this might be common? 10) How could Clare have known something wasnt right?

c) Do you think reporting concerns about the behaviour of strangers online is a good idea? d) Who would you report concerns to? What would prevent you from reporting concerns to parents or another trusted adult?

Ask staff to assist with the organisation of students if necessary You may want to write/type up these responses.

Explanation:
Many young people are concerned that if they report online issues to parents their parents may overreact and even block some of their access to technology. Lets create a list of trusted adults you would consider reporting online concerns to. What would be some strategies to approach the trusted adults to avoid the feared overreaction.
