Organisation of the Workshop Room
Think about how you would like to organise the room for your presentation. You may like to discuss this with the Roll Call teacher prior to beginning the workshop. Some options: - Normal classroom arrangement, semi-circle of tables and chairs, circle of tables and chairs, groups of tables and chairs If you do rearrange the room, remember to arrange the room back to how it was before you leave. Do you need the computer and data projector? Check your lesson plan and make sure they are switched on and ready to go at the before you start the workshop?

Introduction:
Today we are going to explore an issue that relates to being a good digital citizen which means participating safely with digital technology including things like computers, mobile phones and the internet. Being a good digital citizen is important whether you are at home, work or school. We are focusing on the issue of My Internet Use Speak slowly and clearly

Ask staff to assist with the organisation of students

Explanation:
How much time to do you spend each day on the Internet or on other electronic devices such as mobile phones and Mp3 players? This is called screen time and it includes all the time you spend looking at screens including computer and television screens.

Make sure the computer, data projector and speakers are switched on. Ask staff to login to Internet.

Activity 1: What is our daily screen time?


Can you guess how much time it is estimated teenage boys and girls spend each day on screen time? There will be prizes for the most accurate guesses. Collect and hand out prizes

ANSWER:
Boys 4 hrs 15 mins Girls 3 hrs 51 mins per day

Explanation:
Some young people have difficulties in maintaining a balanced approach to their use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies. Having a sense of how much time you spend each day can help you to balance your daily activities. Research indicates that downloading music or video, email, instant messaging and online gaming are the most popular online activities. (zdnet, 2006)

How long do you spend each day and each week on the Internet, using gaming devices and on your mobile phone? This also includes using them for the purposes of homework as well as for entertainment reasons. Fill in the worksheet to see how long your screen time is each day. Lets talk about some responses (i.e. ask questions such as - in what category do you spend most of your time? What device do you spend the most time using?)

Activity 3: Reflection on Habits


Lets talk about some of the issues now with having an imbalance between screen time and offline time. We are going to discuss the questions on your worksheet as a class. Have this website ready to go Speak slowly and clearly

1. How much time am I spending on these activities for entertainment? Identifying how individuals and fellow class members spend their time online how important is technology to them. 2. How much time am I spending on the computer for homework? Sharing ideas regarding how to use the internet effectively for homeworksharing search strategies, sites etc. 3. Do I sometimes mix homework and entertainment? Does this have an impact on homework? How do individuals and fellow class members balance social and homework time do they feel they have the right balance? Is peer pressure a factor with online activities? Does this impede the ability to complete work well? Explore the fact that everybody is different in terms of study styles. Some people seem to do better with regular breaks from study for social interaction while others are better off

completing larger slabs of study before taking a break. Encourage class to share strategies for managing social and homework demands online. How does their online homework and socialising approach fit with the approach their parents would like them to have? 4. Am I doing other offline activities to balance how much time I am spending online? Explore as a class what other activities individuals engage in away from technology. What do they think is a good balance? How do they know? What do friends and family think about the time they spend online or using mobiles? 5. Am I spending too much time on one internet-based activity? Explore as a class how to identify what an acceptable time would be. What are the key factors? What are the indicators somebody might be spending too much time on one activity? 6. What times over the day or evening am I engaged in these activities? Do I have time to rest, eat and do offline activities? Explore whether there are issues arising for any students because of the time spent online. Are there examples of friends or family who seem to be spending too much time online? How do you help someone who is spending too much time online? What steps would you take if your friend was online all the time? 7. Do I need to change how I allocate my time to different online and offline activities? If so, how? General exploration of practical strategies to change approach to online activities if class feels this is necessary.
