Surfs Up! Get your board-shorts on and get your board cause Surfs Up!!! Bob Hall Pier J.P. No wet-suit needed because the average temperature is 71.6 degrees. 5. Wind Beneath Your Wings Corpus Christi is a popular location for windsurfers; many launch their boards from Cole Park. From the Nueces, Aransas, and Mission Rivers to the Laguna Madre or the Packery Channel, youll be sure to see all the wildlife Corpus has to offer. Rockport Kayak Outfitters, Wet Heads Kayak Adventures, Wind and Wave Water Sports. Bird Island Basin is a great place to launch a kayak. (See Map) 7. This ones for the BIRDS! The Coastal Bend boasts one of the best regions for bird watching. Whooping Cranes, White Ibises, Great Blue Herons, and Hawks are some of the fantastic species you can see while in Corpus Christi. Make sure to drive across the JFK Causeway to Port Aransas and then take the ferry to Aransas Pass then drive to Portland, and finally over into Corpus, over the Harbor Bridge. Beach to Bay The Beach to Bay Relay Marathon is the United States largest six-person relay marathon race. Past celebrity relay runners include Texas Governor Rick Perry, State Rep. Abel Herrero, and many more. All proceeds from Beach to Bay go to assist needy non-profit charities here in the Coastal Bend. Pay your respects at the Selena Museum. Ride the water taxi Board the water taxi from the Barge Dock next to the Art Museum of South Texas and take a five-minute ride across the ship channel to the Texas State Aquarium and the Lexington Museum on the Bay. See the Kemps Ridley Sea Turtles The Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle is the most critically endangered sea turtle in the world, and Padre Island National Seashore is the most important Kemps Ridley nesting beach in the U.S. in terms of the total number of nests located there. In an effort to save the species, eggs are collected and released at the National Seashore. During the nesting season (between April and July, roughly), call the Hatchling Hotline for information about upcoming hatchling releases, 361.949.7163. 42. Viva Mexico! Enjoy the unique style of Mexican culture while shopping at El Zocalo. Visit the University of Texas Marine Science Institute The basic function of the Marine Institution is active research programs in marine science, including biochemistry and ecology of marine plants and animals; dynamics of marine ecosystems; biochemistry; Mari culture and more. Shoreline, the only two-story type restaurant of all the Whataburger locations. It also has a spectacular view of the Corpus Christi Bayfront. You dont want to get shot in the face while quail hunting at Armstrong Ranch. But seriously, South Texas features some of the best bird hunting in the country with quail and dove abundant throughout. Looking for bigger game to claim? Try the challenging hunt for trophy Nilgai bull safari style on the coastal plains of South Texas. (and Andy Warhol, too) The Art Museum of South Texas was voted one of the best in southern Texas. Although permanent exhibits feature art from the region, the museum is known for its rotating exhibits of fine art work in different mediums. Many renowned artists have graced its walls, such as Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, and Marc Chagall. Festival of the Arts The Corpus Christi Festival of the Arts showcases music, theater, dance, cinema, and the visual arts throughout the city. Hands-on Art Take a class at the Art Center of Corpus Christi. Not to be mistaken for the Art Museum, the Art Center exhibits works by area artists. Main gallery exhibits change monthly. Dtowns ArtWalk The Downtown Management District mapped out noteworthy features of architectural and public art throughout the downtown area. Also, the DMD hosts an ArtWalk on the last Thursday of every other month which brings local and regional artists out for a night of mingling and, of course, art. Held in late October at Heritage Park, this celebration of jazz music brings thousands of fans together each year to see jazz performers from all over the country and at times international acts as well. www.texasjazzfest.org. 62. WE KNOW DRAMA! Harbor Playhouse is Texas oldest continually performing theater houses community productions and summertime melodramas. You can see productions on the Main Stage, such as Guys and Dolls or Oklahoma!, or catch a more intimate performance on the studio stage.
