Use stamps and ink to create this charming pocket-card and wistful butterfly embellishment
Designer: Nathalie Metivier Time Taken: 30 minutes
Glue a chipboard butterfly to printed paper from the Magenta Printemps Passion collection. Trim around the outline and allow to dry. Stain the edges with a turquoise inkpad. Slightly curl two straight pins then secure to the core of the chipboard, each side of the head of the butterfly. Cut two squares of different printed paper. Good Impressions
Learn all there is to know about getting started in this versatile technique
From loving sentiments and personalised greetings, to swirling flourishes and adorable character motifs, there are so many rubber stamps out there, it is understandable that a newbie crafter may feel a little daunted but don't worry, we're here to help. This useful beginner's guide covers the essential materials and basic techniques to get you printing like a pro, plus tips and advice from some of the UK's top designers.

Getting Started
Before you're ready to go, there are a few things you need to know...
Watercolour pencils and brush markers are the easiest means of shading your image, although gel pens, felt tips, inks, chalks and paints can also be used.

Stamps are available as woodmounted, unmounted and clear. Unmounted are often cheaper, but you will need to purchase a wooden block. An acrylic one is needed for clear stamps.

Pigment ink-pads give strong colours and are ideal for embossing, while dyebased ones are best for glossy surfaces. The other main types are permanent StazOn ink and Versamark, which gives a watermark impression. crafts-beautiful.com 39

With all the different stamps on the market it is easy to get carried away, but some work better than others for beginners' projects. The clear variety are ideal as they're really simple to use. Many are self-clinging so will stick to the acrylic block without additional adhesive. As the block is see-through, it allows you to position the image much more accurately. With an extensive range of sentiments, graphics and illustrations, the possibilities are endless. Flat and easy to store, you also get more motifs in a set than with mounted stamps, making them good value for money.

Crystal Clear

Standing Out

Simply printing and colouring images can produce some gorgeous projects, but if you want to go a step further, then embossing is a great technique which gives a really professional finish. Place your work on a heat-proof mat, then stamp the motif as normal; pigment-based inks work best as they are slowdrying. While the image is still wet, generously sprinkle the whole area with embossing powder and shake off the excess. Clear powder works best on black designs. Using a heat gun, slowly move it around until the powder melts. When dry it will leave a shiny, raised finish. 40 crafts-beautiful.com

Colour of Magic
There are loads of different ways to help bring your image to life. Inks, pastels and pencils are all fab solutions, but for beginners brush markers are a really versatile workbox staple. Use them like regular felt-tip pens, or why not add a small amount of water on a fine paintbrush to spread the colour around. This is a great for blending. They can also be applied directly to the stamp to allow you to print in different shades. Using chalks is another idea and gives a subtle effect that is brilliant for creating backgrounds.

In the Know
Designer and author, Joanna Sheen, on how to make a good impression To get an even coating of ink, lay the stamp flat on its back, then tap the ink-pad gently across the whole surface. Hold firmly and press down onto the card, keeping one hand (or just a finger) on the stamp at all times. Apply pressure systematically across the whole image, then lift from the paper using a vertical straight up movement to prevent smudging. CB Designer, Tracey Daykin-Jones on adding colour If I am using paints, usually Twinkling H2Os, to shade a stamped image, I always heat emboss the printed motif first using clear powder. This creates a barrier and stops the paint from bleeding over the edges. Alternatively, I just stamp the image and colour in with pencils. crafts-beautiful.com 41

Heart Felt
Designer: Lynell Harlow

This card is simple but classic and can be put together in next to no time by stencilling on a regular embossing plate
Time Taken: 20 minutes

FirstSteps

o Stencil: Dreamweaver; Floral heart (LG712), metal o Stencil shield, Picasso (LL332) o Paste, embossing o Knife, palette o Bowl of water with scrub brush. o Ink-pads, iridescent pigment, assortment o Brushes, 1/8 o Tape, removable o Card, white, sparkly, purple

Centre the large heart stencil onto the greeting using removable tape. Paste emboss this design according to the instructions on the jar. Clean the stencil in water using a small scrub brush and dry with a soft rag. Once dry, reposition it with removable tape. Tap a small stencil brush onto the pigment inkpad, then off-load the excess by tapping the brush away, ensuring it's not too wet. Colour using a circular rouging technique. Be sure to keep the bristles flat against the surface as you go. Repeat with a second colour, using the shield to protect areas where you do not want the ink to overlap. Continue stencilling a different shade for each bloom all the way around the wreath. Save the green sections until last.

Prints Charming

Be inspired to think 'outside the box' with more fabulous stamping ideas

Another Dimension

Use individual motifs, such as flowers or balloons, to create pop-up greetings. Here the motif was stamped onto scrap pieces of card and attached to coiled wire, before being fixed to the inside using foam pads. Material World

Printing stamps onto fabrics is a fantastic way to create beautiful patterned material. The stunning purse pictured here was made by printing a butterfly foam stamp onto cotton using craft paint. The motif was then mounted onto green felt and the sides sewn up in blanket stitch. This project was featured in issue 5 of our sister title, Let's Get Crafting. 50 crafts-beautiful.com

Border Line

Tapestry stamps are brilliant for creating trimmings for all sorts of home furnishings, such as this gorgeous treasure box by sarah Beaman. Peg-type designs are easy to use in a variety of formats, such as wreaths and all-over patterns, making them a versatile and valuable addition to your kit. Use the motifs as inspiration for the embellishments and stitches that you use to complete the project. Here Emma has coordinated beautiful flower sequins and beads to go with the floral images.

Image Conscious
Create your own decoupage papers by printing similar themed images onto white paper. This stunning treasure box was made by stamping and cutting out celestial themed images, and then pasting them onto the surface using decoupage glue. To find more inspirational projects, take a look at 100 Great Ways To Use Rubber Stamps by Francoise Read (David & Charles, 12.99).

Have a go at transferring your favourite stamp designs onto home furnishings, such as cushions and napkins. Sarah Beaman designed this pretty cushion for our August 2008 issue. The method involves stamping a posy of flowers onto silk using versacraft ink, then shading in the blooms with watercolour pencils.
