1. The following data pertains to a deck slab bridge


Clear span: 5.5 m
Width the footpath:1 m on either side. Wearing coat : 100 mm
Loading : IRC class AA (Tracked)
Materials : M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel
Design the deck slab.

Draw the following to a suitable scale.

(a) Longitudinal Section showing top and bottom reinforcements


(b) Cross-section showing details of reinforcement in slab and kerb portion.[24+8]

2. Design the mid-span section and bracings of a deck type plate girder railway bridge
for single track Metre Gauge (M.G) main line loading for the following data.
Effective span = 16.1 m
Lateral load = 7500 N/m
Spacing of plate girders = 1.3 m center to center
Weight of stock rails = 455 N/m
Weight of guard rails = 255 N/m
Weight of fastenings = 280 N/m of track
Timber sleepers = 254 mm X 154 mm X 1.8 m @ 0.4 m center to center
Density of Timber = 7.4kN/m3
Take permissible stresses in accordance with railway steel bridge code provisions.
Stiffeners and bracings need not be designed.

4. (a) Explain how the effective width of the slab is calculated to function as com-
pression flange in T-beams of a girder bridge.

5. The following particulars are available for a foot bridge.


Type of girder = Warren-type truss
Span of girders = 16.2 m
Spacing of cross girders = 2.7 m center to center
Use six panels of 2.7 m each
Clear walking width between main girders = 3.1 m
Live load = 4.1kN/m2
Flooring = Timber planks on cross girders
Design the rakers and all the members of the fourth panel. [16]

6. (a) How do you classify stairs. Explain different stairs with figures.
(b) How do you design stairs spanning longitudinally.. [10+6]

7. Design the bottom dome of an Intze type water tank with a capacity of 10 lakh
liters. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 grade of steel. Assume the intensity of wind
pressure to be 1500N/m2 . Draw a rough sketch showing details of reinforcement.

PART-A(Marks:32)

1. Design inner panel and central longitudinal girder of a T-Beam bridge for the
following data.
Clear width of road way = 7.5 m
Span center to center of bearings = 12 m
Live Load = One lane of IRC Class AA
Average thick ness of wearing coat = 75 mm
Grade of Concrete = M 20 for both deck slab and for beams
Permissible stress in steel = 135N/mm2
Assume unit weight of concrete as 24kN/m3
Draw the following to a suitable scale.

(a) Cross section of the inner panel Deck slab


(b) Longitudinal section of the central longitudinal girder. [24+8]

2. A pratt truss is to be used as one of the two main girders of a single track railway
bridge carrying rolling loads on stringers which in turn are carried by cross-girders
connected to the nodes of the trusses. The truss center lines are 7.5 m apart while a
pair of stringer divide this distance in to three equal parts of 2.5 m each. The truss
has six panels of each 6 m width. The height of the truss is 7.8 m. The following
additional data is given.
Effective span of the main girder = 36 m
Dead load on each truss = 25 kN/m
Equivalent U.D.L. live load for each girder = 70 kN/m
Impact factor = 20%
Design suitable sections for top chord and bottom chord members. Also, design
stringers and cross girders. Design any one joint either at top or bottom.
Draw to a suitable scale the following items.

3. A slab bridge has a clear span of 3.55 m and clear width of road way as 4.55 m.
Compute maximum bending moment due to single lane of IRC class A loading
using effective width method of analysis. [16]

4. A roof slab freely supported over the four edges has inner dimensions of 4.5 m X
6 m. The slab carries a load of 40 kN at its center distributed over an area of 1
m X 1m. Compute the bending moment in the two directions of the slab using
Pigeaud?s method. [16]

5. A foot bridge of effective span 15 m has a clear width of 2.5 m. the flooring consists
of timber planks. Use a Pratt-type truss with 6 panels of 2.5 m each. Cross girders
are provided at 2.5 m spacing. The live load may be assumed as 4500N/m2 . Design
the cross girders and central panel members. [16]

6. Write short notes on the following.

(a) Geometrical stairs


(b) Dog-legged stairs
(c) Open-well stairs. [16]

7. An Intze type water tank has to store 550,000 litres of water. The height of the
staging is 15.2 m up to the bottom of tank. Assume the intensity of wind pressure
as 1600N/m2 . Work out suitable dimensions for the tank. Design the top dome
and cylindrical wall. Use M25 concrete and FE 415 grade steel bars. [16]

6. A straight stair in a residential building is supported on wall on one side and stringer
beam on the other side. The risers are 150 mm and the treads are 250 mm and
the horizontal span of the stairs may be taken as 1.3 m. The live load on the stairs
may be taken as 3.5kN/m2 . Design a suitable staircase. Use M20 grade of concrete
and HYSD bars with an allowable stress of 230 MPa. Draw a rough sketch showing
reinforcement particulars. [16]

7. Design the top dome and top ring beam of an Intze type water tank with a capacity
of 900,000 litres. The height of the staging is 16 m up to the bottom of tank. Assume
the intensity of wind pressure as 1500N/m2 . Use M20 concrete and HYSD steel
bars with an allowable stress of 230 MPa. [16]

ground to first floor. Height of the floor is 4.27 m and width of the stair is 1.22 m.
Provide a lift well of 1.22 m X 1.83 m. Use M20 grade of concrete and HYSD steel
bars with an allowable stress of 230 MPa. Assume the unit weight of concrete =
23kN/m3 . Draw a rough sketch showing reinforcement particulars. [16]

7. (a) Explain the membrane analysis procedure for analyzing different component
parts of an INTZE type water tank.
(b) Explain how do you consider the effect of continuity in the analysis of Intze
type water tank. [12+4]
