1. Prove that the harmonic functions of frequencies p and 2p when added will give
a periodic function of frequency p. Generalize it with n harmonic function of
frequencies p, 2p, 3p, np etc. [16]

2. A cylinder of diameter D and mass M floats vertically in a liquid of mass density


d as shown in fig2. It is depressed slightly and released. Find the period of its
oscillation. [16]

3. A 1500 Kg machine can be modeled as a mass placed on four felt pads such that
each spring is equally loaded. Determine the stiffness and the damping coefficient
of each felt pad so that the natural frequency is 2.0 Hz. and the system is critically
damped. [16]

4. Derive an expression steady state and transient displacement for forced harmonic
motion. [16]

5. Find the natural frequency of vibration for the system shown in Figure 5. [16]

6. (a) Derive the differential equation of motion for the flexural vibration of a beam
of uniform cross section
(b) Hence show that the frequency equation of such a cantilever beam of length L
is given by cos ki L . cosh ki L = -1 where ki = (ω/a)1/2 and a= (EI/ρA)1/2

7. Consider a train with an engine hailing eleven wagons.folowing the engine have
amass of28 tonne each, the next tow 17 tonne each. The sixth to tenth wagons
have amass of 16 tonne stiffness of each coupling is 1mn/m. Determine first three
natural frequencies &corresponding mode shapes by Holzer’s method? [16]

8. Derive the integral equation of motion for free vibrations of a slender unrestrained
wing. [16]

1. Sketch the resultant of two harmonic motions whose ratio of amplitude is 0.5 and
those of frequencies is 15. What will be the frequency of the resultant motion?

2. A circular cylinder of mass 4kg and radius 25 cm is connected by a spring of stiffness


4000 N/m as shown in figure 2.It is free to roll on horizontal rough surface without
slipping. Determine the natural frequency? [16]

3. Analysis of the oscilloscopic record of a rap test on a machine mounted on isolators
reveal that the rate of decay of the amplitude is 2.5% per cycle when the amplitude
is 1.5 cm and 4 % when the amplitude is 0.4 cm. Assume both coulomb as well as
the viscous damping are present in the system. Determine the magnitude of the
damping ratios. [16]

4. Explain vibrometer and other vibration measuring instrument. [16]

5. Determine the natural frequencies and the amplitude ratios of the system shown
in Fig5. in the two modes of vibration. The system consists of a mass m1 with
cross sectional area A1 floating in a fluid of specific mass M. the mass m1 carries a
second mass m2 with volume V2 and is connected to it by a spring of constant k.

1. Define the various terms associated with the vibrations of the systems. If a machine
is vibrating with frequency 150Hz. Determine its frequency in rad/s and time period
of the oscillations. [16]

2. Find the natural frequency of vibration of the system for small amplitudes .If K1,
K2, a and b are fixed determine the value of b for which the system will not vibrate.
Find the condition when there is maximum acceleration of mass? [16]

3. A spring of stiffness 490 N/m supports a mass of 19.6 kg. A dashpot of 196 N-sec/m
in parallel. If a velocity of a 0.10 m/sec is applied to the mass at rest position what
will be its displacement from the equilibrium position at the end of the first second.

4. A small reciprocating machine weighs 25kg and runs at a constant speed of 6000
r.p.m. After installation the forcing frequency was found to be too close to the
natural frequency of the system. Design a dynamic vibration absorber if the nearest
frequency of the system is to be at least 20% from the excitation frequency. [16]

5. A reciprocating engine has a mass of 40 kg and runs at a constant speed of 3000


rpm. After it was installed it vibrated with large amplitude at the operating speed.
What dynamic vibration absorber should be coupled to the system if the nearest
resonant frequency of the combined system has to be at least 25% away from the
operating speed, under these conditions what amplitude of the absorber will be
obtained? [16]

6. Determine the equation for the natural frequencies of a uniform rod in torsional
oscillation with one end fixed and the other end free?

(a) Mention the conditions of Euler beam?


(b) Derive Euler’s equation of motion for beam vibration?

1. What is D’Alembret’s Principal how it is used for the to analysis of an oscillating


system. Use the above principal to analyze any single degree of freedom system.

2. Find the natural frequency of vibration of the system for small amplitudes .If K1,

frequency of the machine is to be at least 20% from the forced frequency, design
a suitable vibration absorber of the system. Assume the mass of the machine as
30 kg.Specify the lowest frequency of a vibrometer that can be measured with 1%
error, if its natural frequency is 4 Hz and damping ratio is 0.2. [16]

5. A torsional system has an inertia of 1.176 kg-m2 and a torsional stiffness 235 N-
m/rad. It is acted upon by a torsional excitation at 150 cpm. Determine the
parameters of the absorber to be fixed to the main system if it is desired to keep
the natural frequencies at least 20% away from the impressed frequency. [16]
