With so many new starters, we need to get better every day in practice. We have to replace most of our offensive line and our entire starting secondary, so those are areas we need to shore up in a hurry. That is why two-adays and our scrimmages went a long way for us to decide who will start. We also dont have as much depth coming in as weve had in the past, so we spent a lot of the preseason working on that so we can provide our starters some relief. We dont have a lot of time to get up to speed because our schedule wont allow it.

that is especially good because we rely so much on our quarterbacks to audible and get us out of bad plays, Schulte said. We rotate a lot of guys in at receivers its how we can keep people fresh outside and in the secondary. Still, Brock Bonifas our offense will live and die with how quickly our new offensive linemen can mature and improve. base 4-3. We stress constantly about getting people to the ball, Schulte added. Were solid up the middle with a returning tackle and two linebackers, which is a good area to build around. Cody didnt start at the beginning of last Aaron year but came Deffenbaugh on as the season wore on. Again, we have to find players to step up in all of the areas we have openings, especially in the secondary. A lot of what we do on defense is built around our defensive line doing a great job of occupying the offensive line and letting our linebackers get to the Dalton Nagel ball free. The new kicker is Metzger (6-of-7 extra points) and Warnecke the new punter. Steve Recker is the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. Other assistants are Dan Metzger, Jerry Jackson, Sean Hulihan, Jason Bockey, Jerry Burgei, Adam Lee and Dick Clark. St. Johns entertains growing gridiron archrival Lima Central Catholic Saturday, Aug. 25, to kick off 2012.

Last year, we were young and prone to injuries. This year I have seven seniors who all played and started throughout the year . This group of seniors is very determined this year. They are a good group of girls who are working hard in order to meet their goals. The other four full-time varsity players will also bring a lot of determination to the court.

One of our strengths is we have Brittany Kramer a group of girls that are very hard workers, plus they are eager to learn a lot about the game, he said. Unfortunately, having lost eight starters including seven seniors we are trying to fill a lot of positions. Rylee Hamilton Those seven seniors took 14 letters with them: Julie Bonifas, Kristie Grothouse, Kaitlin Wrasman, Myriah Jackson, Courtney Grothouse, Katie Evans and Jessica Hammons. As well, Rachel Michael, Jessica Recker
Ashley Kroeger, Emily McRedmond and Sydney Freund chose not to go out in 2012. Our main goal this year is for the girls knowledge of the game to improve and in turn have better players with better understanding of the game, Munoz added. We are trying to focus on our indi- Alyssa Gable vidual games at this point. This year, we really want the girls to become good athletes by falling in love with the game in a very fun environment. That is my goal every year; for the Michelle girls to enjoy playing Hitchcock the game. Kristy Hasenkamp is the assistant coach. The Jays opened the 2012 season Tuesday, Aug. 21, at home versus St. Marys Memorial. All home matches will be at the St. Johns Annex. Ally Mohler

That may be something a little different than our kids are used to from the past but we have stressed that in our conditioning and during two-a-days; being active and aggressive and getting off our blocks. DELPHOS - Jeffersons volleyballers were a young and inexperienced lot last season for first-year head coach Joy Early. The Lady Wildcats of 2011 finished 2-19 after losing a ton of experience in seven graduates and their coach April Merschman from 2010. Early returns five starters and a sixth letterwinner from her inaugural crew, so she expects a much more successful season in her sophomore campaign in 2012. Even with the experience, only one of those returning starters is a senior (only two 12th-graders dot the varsity roster, so this unit will be sophomoreand junior-dominated) and the units most veteran player: Fallon VanDyke (third year). Three more are juniors: Katie Goergens (third year), Rileigh Stockwell (second year) and Kamie Pulford (second year). The fifth starter is sophomore Brooke Culp. Possibly stepping into the one void in Charlie Ashby photo the starting lineup is senior letterwinner Caitlin Landwehr. As the Lady Cats ready for the new Charlie Ashby photo season, Early has a good read on her Lady Wildcat varsity volleyball crews assets. I look for the three seniors and Carter to set a strong and consistent tone and be most likely to surprise some people; a start that can carry the team into the post season and NWC tournament, he said. With the loss of the graduated Alex Garza, Tyler Miller and A.J. Teman and some others that chose not to go out, Brinkman will look to promising newcomers such as junior Tyler Rice, junior Kyle Berelsman, sophomore Zach Wannemacher and classmate Jacob Jacob Violet Hamilton. What we need to work on right now is hitting more greens in regulation and finishing the hole strong when on the green, Brinkman added. We look to be competitive in the Northwest Conference, striving to finish in the top 3. Jefferson has opened its season.

Early also knows what her team has to address to add more wins. We are working diligently on improving our defensive play and backrow passing. We have changed our offense to a 5-1 this year (from a 6-2 set in her first season) and we are relying on Brooke to do the majority of our set-

ELIDA Kevin King has put together a 34-82 record in his five years at the Elida volleyball helm. That includes a 9-14 mark in 2011. He returns four starters from the crew of Lady Bulldogs and six letterwinners overall, so he has expectations of a brighter 2012, though he does have some major holes to fill. We lost some very key players and leaders from last season; we are a young squad this year but have a very good understanding of the game and hope to use our knowledge to be able to adapt to each opponent. We will use our speed to help create offense and defend against bigger competition, King said. Back in the starting lineup are third-year junior veteran Torie McAdams (5-10 middle/outside hitter; 77 kills, 39 blocks), along with senior Bethany Koch (5-7, defensive specialist/opposite hitter), Aubrey Williams (5-8 sophomore outside/middle hitter; 150 kills) and junior Ally Bader (5-7 outside/ opposite hitter; 24 aces). Junior Erika Kiel (5-7 libero/outside hitter) and junior Alicia Zuber (5-5 defensive specialist; 184 digs) also earned letters off the bench last fall . Beside Kiel, King is eying contributions from newcomers in sophomore Katie Hawk (5-8 setter/opposite hitter), freshman Summer Grogg (5-9 outside hitter), freshmen (Kali Cahill (5-10 middle hitter/setter) men Kali Cahill (5-10 middle hitter/setter) and classmate Karmyn Martinez (5-6 deand classmate Karmyn Martinez (5-6 defensive specialist/defensive hitter). fensive specialist outside specialist/outside hitter). Hambleton (457 digs). The rest of the varsity roster has juniors Andrea Stocker (5-7 defensive specialist) and Were hoping to develop this young team into a formidable opponent. We will be very young but girls are ready to step up and replace the positions we lost, King added. The Western Buckeye League will have a different look this season. As always, there will be very tough league competition but there is room for teams that have not been near the top in the past to really make their mark this season. I look for Wapakoneta - who has some very good returning players as well as young talent, O-G who has speed and knowledge, and Celina, despite a coaching change, is always very competitive to be near the top again this season. Ashley Edwards and Leisa Stratton are the assistant coaches. The junior varsity team has sophomores Katelyn Shellenbarger (5-6 DS/OH), Abby Fromm (5-5 S/DS), Lauren Huffer (5-11 MH/OH) and Hayley ONeal (5-3 DS); and freshmen Cheyanne Elsea (5-1 DS/L), Allie Bailey (5-11 MH/OH), Megan Tracy (5-7 OH/DS), Emily Bowman (5-7 OH), Erin Bowman (5-7 S/OPP) and Taylor Creps (5-7 OPP/S). We are proving to be hard workers and this will help us mature throughout the season, Thomas noted. Were going to need to mature quickly as we have a large number of freshmen and sophomores that will be contributing from the get-go. We have a lot of overall youth this season with 19 freshmen and sophomores; these two classes have a lot of potential and will eventually make an impact as the season progresses. Im excited to see how this years junior and senior classes perform and set a good example for the young guys. If the upperclassmen accept their roles and responsibilities and help the younger players along, things could go well. The Bulldogs must replace graduates such as Brennan Nelson, Joe Burnett, Josh Line, Adam Troyer, Trey Bowman and Zac Siefker. Scott Warris is the assistant coach. Elida opens the new campaign tonight at its own Soccer Classic.
The Lady Bulldogs saw five players use up their eligibility in 2011: Morrisey, 3-year starter (and 4-year letterwinner) Beth Boyle (forward), Jenn Eilerman (midfielder), Corissa Evans (midfielder) and Klaynesha Ingram (forward/defense). Besides the senior Foust, Overholt has high hopes on other fresh faces in senior Gina Culp (defense), junior Caitlyn Shroyer (midfielder/goalkeeper), sophomore Kaylee Klinger (defense) and classmate Kaitlin Gay (defense). The rest of the varsity roster has seniors Tanesha Manley (defense/midfielder) and Mckenna McCarthy (defense/midfielder) and freshman Sarah Suever (midfielder). Were excited to get the season started and see how we do against a tough Western Buckeye League schedule, he added. Elise Jenkins is the varsity assistant and junior varsity coach. Elida has already opened its 2012 season Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Coldwater.
The Elida Lady Dawg varsity soccer unit for the coming campaign has, front from left, Jena Wensole, Shannon Boroff, Rachel Foust, Kala Bowsher and Mckenna McCarthy; middle, Lindsey Hall, Cassidy Slusher, Tanesha Manley, Gina Culp, Ashley Erman and Caitlyn Shroyer; and standing, head coach Brady Overholt, Kaitlin Gay, Sarah Suever, Kaylee Klinger, Alisha Brenneman, Brett Pauff and assistant coach Elise Jenkins.
By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA The Elida girls soccer team finished 2011 with a 6-8-4 mark with a younger and inexperienced crew and ended up as Division II sectional runners-up. By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA Bruce Marshall coached the Elida Middle School cross country teams for the last nine years under varsity coach Craig Kerns. Now, he moves up the chain, taking over for Kerns at the varsity level for 2012 with 13 boys and 10 girls out for the units. I have coached at the junior high level in both cross country and track for a number of years and have been teaching at Elida for 32 years, Marshall began. Marshall wont have a lot of experience either way as only two letterwinners return on
each side: boys seniors Kane Brookman and Jordan Coulter and girls Torrye Brinkman (senior) and Kaiti Hinegardner (junior). He will rely particularly on promising boys varsity newcomers such as senior Ardie Sayoto, freshman Gaerid Littler (placed 8th in middle school WBL meet last October) and freshman Josh Bull. Strengths for the boys team is a mixture of runners from all four classes with a number of promising freshmen. Unfortunately, with so many younger runners, they lack experience running the high school 5K distance, Marshall said. The rest of the boys roster and needing to fill out the deeper numbers are
Asa Swihart (senior), Zack Shoup (senior), Logan Malone (junior), Zack Holycross (sophomore), Alex Dukehart (sophomore), Alex Yonut (freshman), Eric Anthony (freshman) and Noah Kendall (freshman). For the Lady Dawgs, Marshall will look to three freshmen Aly Turrentine, Sarah Suever and Tori Brinkman to lend a hand. These three girls placed second, fourth and sixth out of 76 girls in the middle school WBL meet last October, Marshall added. Strengths for the girls team are a strong group of freshmen with a few returning upperclassmen as well. However, the same thing on the boys is that with so many new-
comers to high school, getting acclimated to the high school distance is an adjustment. Goals for both teams are continuing to improve with our times individually and do better as a team at the conference meet. Teams to look out for there are Van Wert, Defiance, Celina and Shawnee. The remainder of the Lady Dawgs varsity roster has Rachel Kerber (junior), Hannah Malone (freshman), Mychaela Johnson (freshman), Helena Van Sickle (freshman), and classmate Ashley Ulrich. Elida opens the Marshall tenure Friday, Aug. 24, at the Cincinnati Moeller Invitational.

That means Kimmet has an extremely experienced crew as he enters the new campaign off of a 10-6 edition in 2011. We have all those letterwinners back, including seven seniors. (Continued from page 30) by the end of the season. Injuries have been a big part of our teams the last couple of seasons. We have to keep them healthy but its a fine line since we need to keep them in tip-top shape and keep them sharp. Samantha Rellinger, Jenna Warnecke and Holly Von Sossan graduated from the Lady Green roster from a year ago, while for the boys, Jason Turnwald (4 years) and Seth Bendele (3 years) exhausted their eligibility after the end of last season. Alex Eickholt is the assistant coach. Ottoville begins 2012 at the St. Johns Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 25, at Stadium Park.

Members of the Ottoville boys soccer team for 2012 (front row, from left) are Rudy Wenzlick, Alex Horstman, Jared Fanning, Drew Williams, Austin Honigford, Colin Bendele, Brandt Landin, Joe Van Oss, Lucas Maag and Joel Beining. In the back row are Dustin Markward, assistant coach, Dylan Klima, Austin Schroeder, Anthony Eickholt, Cory Fischer, Grant Altenburger, Bryan Hohlbein, Logan Gable, Austin Meyer, Matt Burgei and Eric Gerker, head coach. Absent from photo is Jordan Gudakunst. ers will have to get acclimated to playing varsity-level soccer very quickly. Losing nine very skilled seniors from last year will also be a concern. Many starting positions will be filled with new faces. Two seniors will be in their first varsity seasons: Austin Meyer (defense) and Cory Fischer (defense). As well, sophomores Joel Beining (midfielder) and Joe Van Oss (defense) and freshmen Rudy Wenzlick (sweeper/defense), Drew Williams (forward/midfielder) and Jared Fanning (forward) in particularly will need to step up their play from the outset, as will potential new goalkeeper Colin Bendele (sophomore) and sophomore midfielder Jordan Gudakunst. We look to be competitive in all our games this season but must maintain playing consistent soccer the entire season. Scoring shouldnt be a problem with Eickholt, Klima, Maag and Horstman up front, Gerker added. Midfield possession should be fine as many lettermen return who came off the bench last season. Defense could have some growing pains early, with a few positions being filled with first-year varsity players, but should have a solid teaching core with lettermen Hohlbein, Honigford and Burgei returning. Overall, the PCL should be very competitive this year; all the teams should be very balanced from top to bottom. Anyone could beat anyone on any given night. It will be a fun and entertaining league race to follow this year. Dustin Markward is the junior varsity and varsity assistant coach. Ottoville opened 2012 Saturday, Aug. 18, at home versus Spencerville.

The Fort Jennings girls soccer team for 2012 has, Row 1, left to right: Jessica Young, Jenna German, Renee Kraner, Kasidy Klausing, Jorden Horstman, Lydia Mesker, Madison Grote and Brandi Kaskel; Row 2, Jaci Thomas, Keri Eickholt, Sarah Chandler, Alyssa Louth, Erin Osting, Jenna Cavelage, Hannah Clay and Alyssa Weideman; Row 3, Cassie Horstman, Nicole Ricker, Jamie Saum, Marissa Good, Emily Grone and Ashley Gable; Row 4, Martina Weems, Elaina Maag, Reanne Higginbotham, Elaina Maag, Katlin Stechschulte, Gabbie German, Marissa Mesker, Macy Schroeder, Lori Bruskotter, Mara Brown and Gina Stechschulte. and Erin Osting. Staying healthy is always a concern; we have been conditioning more than in past years hoping to prevent injuries. Filling the goalie position left vacant by Kelsey would be another concern but Gabbie German, a senior, has had experience playing goalie before and played on our summer league team and is looking pretty good, Wagner continued. We have a freshman that looked good in our JV games last season. We also have our back-up varsity keeper from last season (Emily Grone) that could see a little time in goal but also plays good on the field. So it may not be that big of concern. Getting the team to play as one unit and changing the way we play defense would be another concern but with a little practice the girls pick things up quickly, we may be OK. Wagner also has a solid core of nine freshmen to learn the ropes and provide even more depth as well as play some junior varsity matches for 2012: Brandi Kaskel, Kasidy Klausing, Jenna German, Madison Grote, Lydia Mesker, Jorden Horstman, Renee Kraner, Jessica Young and Jaci Thomas. We have good speed and girls that can finish a goal on a 1-on-1 or with the assistance of other players. We have a very good defensive unit and girls in the middle that can control the ball, Wagner added. The PCL is always tough for us because we play three of our four league games in See MUSKETEERS, page 37

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com FORT JENNINGS Gregg Luthman returned to the Fort Jennings boys soccer sidelines after spending a number of years with New Knoxville and Wapakoneta. In his fourth overall season at the helm of the Musketeers, he returns nine lettermen back from that edition of Musketeers that finished 7-10-1, 2-3-0 in the alwayscompetitive Putnam County League. Those nine include four starters: senior Chad Recker (striker; secondteam all-District, firstteam PCL), senior defensive midfielder Dylan Eldridge (honorablemention PCL), sophomore striker Mark Metzger and classmate Connor Wallenhorst (defender). The other five veterans include senior outside midfielder Adam Kleman, junior attacking midfielder/defender Seth Ricker, junior defender/striker Garrett Berelsman, junior striker/outside midfielder Dylan Van Loo and sophomore Evan Ricker (outside midfielder). All our returning lettermen are top prospects this year because it will take great efforts on which they can build to lead us this year. As well, they will need to blend their experience to meld together with the underclassmen and freshmen into a team that puts its best out on the line every day and every minute of the game, Luthman noted. The remainder of the Musketeer roster has Austin Metzger, Aaron Neidert, Drew Grone, Jeremy Smith, Kyle Hellman, Austin Wisner, Dillon Schimmoeller, Alex Berelsman, Ryan Koester, Austin Kehres, Jared Hoersten, Chad Wurst,

Lucas Ricker, Spencer Dray, Drew Stechschulte and Alex Vetter. Luthman bid adieu to a group of 2-year letterwinning seniors in Aaron Schnipke, Brian Wurst, Jeremy Kohli, Nick Verhoff, Ethan Schimmoeller, Tyler Wiedeman, Jason Berelsman and Jeremy Schimmoeller and 1-year letterman Petey Van Loo. The players have come in much more fit, worked really hard in the off-
season and their attitudes befit being a Musketeer. They will out-hustle and outthink an opponent, be the most intense and play quicker and harder, Luthman added. I anticipate we will be very strong defensively as a collective group and be extremely focused to be at our best every moment we are on the pitch. With the loss of Pandora-Gilboa, we are down to five PCL teams again but it will be a tough grind as usual.
Continental, Kalida, Miller City and Ottoville are always geared to be unrelenting as opponents. Nevertheless, we will be hunting for the top. Helping Luthman in the coaching duties are assistant coach Bill Calvelage and volunteer assistant Alex Maag. Fort Jennings begins its boys season tonight, Aug. 23, at the Elida Soccer Classic.

season with us just squeaking out a 1-0 victory. Ottoville had their ups and downs last the second and third week of the season. We season but finished strong. This could be are usually a second-half-of-the-year team one of the toughest seasons in the Putnam but with the extra conditioning, I like our chances this season; the girls seem more committed to the program and the seniors, along with the rest of the players, want to do well this year. Continental played well last season and was co-league champs; Coach (Toby) Bidlack always has a way of getting his team prepared for the season. I dont believe FOR COMPLETE they lost much from last season, so I expect them to be at the top of the league again. BODY REPAIR Kalida has a very good team under Coach for Van and Truck Accessories (Dave) Kehres; they return a lot of starters from last season and was the other co-champ of the league last season. Expect Kalida to 21405 Rd. 20P, Ft. Jennings be another team up to the top again. We have good team speed and athleticism but we are learning a new system. We want to compete for a league title
and make the playoffs, Schafer noted. We want to be physical, yet use our speed to create mismatches on offense.

Defensively, we want to be physical and gang tackle. We have a great senior class with many leaders. Some of them have been waiting behind another good senior class for their opportunity to shine. With a new system, their confidence will be tested early. If everything clicks, a confident team can be very dangerous. COLUMBUS GROVE The 2012 version of the Columbus Grove boys cross country team has a lot to live up to following last years success for seventh-year head coach Terry Schnipke. The team returns seven of its top eight runners from a team that finished seventh at the state meet in Hebron a year ago. The team also won the Northwest Conference and their Division III district, as well as four invitationals. The only departures are the graduated Josh Stephens and Drew Schroeder. A senior-laden team returns several 3-year lettermen, including Jake Graham, Alex Shafer, Grant Schroeder, Nick Schmiesing and Troy Meyer. Top sophomores Colton Grothaus and Jerry Kesslemeyer will be back after strong freshmen seasons. Filling in for graduating seniors Drew Schroeder and Josh Stephens will be sophomores Alex Tabler, Corey Schroeder, Elisha Jones and Cody Wischmeyer, as well as junior Cody Reynolds and senior Darrion Gant. Promising newcomers include junior Lee Altenburger, junior Jacob Schroeder and sophomore Zach Shafer. This group has worked very hard this summer; my veterans who went to camp put in 3-a-day practices and have been leading by example all summer. My top runners are just not phased by hard work, Schnipke said. It doesnt matter if we are doing a long run, intervals, hillwork, speedwork, or a tempo run; they just go about their business and work hard. They are a pleasure to coach and make my job easier. The last day of camp, after we had put in about 50 miles already, they ran a half-marathon in Hocking Hills. They know that hard work pays off and that summer miles bring autumn smiles. It

the few teams in our league; Evans goal is to win conference player of the year and to compete in the state tournament and I expect him to make a pretty good run at it, he added. I think any one of our young golfers could surprise us this year. Golf is a funny game; any kid who really gets the golf bug is capable of putting in the extra time it takes to improve. I think we have several guys who will greatly improve over the first several weeks of the season. James and Mitchell hopefully will be a big surprise. James left off last year working hard and has continued to do so this summer. I expect Mitchell to immediately contribute to the team. We have a good group of kids and will improve as the season goes by and our guys gain a little more experience. We will be pretty competitive with the other teams we play this season. As well, sophomore Devann Springer (middle hitter/blocker and setter) is back to lend a hand. We are looking to speed up our offense this year and be a more aggressive defensive team. This team is very versatile, Crow continued. We have many options for lineups depending on our opponents. We have a good bench that will be a very vital part of our team. Mandie Tennant (senior) is a promising newcomer. Gone from a year ago are Carley Springer (outside/right-side hitter), Becca Adam (setter), Beth Army (right-side hitter) and Sam Shafer (defensive specialist). (Continued from page 47) Langhals (midfielder/forward). Right now, we have little to no strengths because of the losses we had from last year, Czubik said. Our concerns are a little bit of everything, especially experience and our youth. We are definitely in a rebuilding mode right now but we do have some talented underclassmen. Unlike the last couple of seasons, Czubik will be relying a lot on those varsity newcomers coming off the junior varsity unit especially sophomores Brent Hovest (goalkeeper), Devin Kortokrax (midfielder/ defender), Luke Langhals (midfielder/forward), Cole Miller (defender) and Logan Roebke (defender); and
freshmen Austin Swift (forward/midfielder) and Grant Unverferth (forward/midfielder). As well, Czubik will turn to other newcomers such as seniors Adam Knueve (defender), Dustin Rosselit (forward/midfielder) and Eric Warnecke (midfielder/ defender); junior Ryan Kahle (midfielder/defender); and freshmen Drew Hovest (defender).
Ryan Birkemeier serves as the assistant coach. Scott States coaches the junior varsity team made up of Hovest, sophomores Ben Burkhart, Jacob Dunn, Derrick Schimmoeller, Michael Schroeder, Austin Schulte and Ryan Siefker; and freshmen Westin Basinger, Riley Edwards, Brandon Erhart, Trent Gerding, Devin Giesige, Jordan Kortokrax, Nathan Myers, Brandon Verhoff, Alex vonderEmbse, Nathan Vorst, Trey Webken and Kaleb Selhorst. Kalidas boys team opened its season Saturday, Aug. 18, at R. Nelson Snider.
