The Agricultural Research and Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA) is a notforprofit organization working with producers to enhance and improve their operations through access to field research and new technology. Made up of 13 Member Associations focused on applied research, demonstrations and extension in the areas of crop and forage production, ARECA acts as a strong united voice for producers by speaking on their behalf to industry leaders and government representatives. Each Member Association delivers programs and develops projects that address the concerns and priorities of producers in their specific regions. Alberta is a national leader in the production and export of canola, barley and wheat. The production of cereals, oilseeds, specialty crops and forages makes for a very diverse, dynamic industry that can be credited with significant economicimpactintheprovince. ARECA Associations conduct variety trials, hold fieldschoolsandtours,provideinformationon the control of insects and weeds, and help producerscreateandmaintainenvironmentally andeconomicallysustainableoperations. TheforageindustryinAlbertaissignificantand includesawidevarietyofdiversestakeholders. Thereareanestimated30,000producersinthe province managing more than 9 million hectaresofseededforage,managedrangeand bushpastures. ARECA Associations demonstrate new forage varieties and technologies, assess the effectiveness of specific forage legumes and grasses on livestock, hold grazing schools and field tours, provide information on forage and livestock systems, and help producers involved in forages create environmentally and economicallysustainableoperations.
