STANDARD DRILL REQUIREMENTS

MARKING TIME:

Feet will be raised alternately, meaning one foot action will complete before the other one starts. The leg and foot will be lifted to the line of march. As the knee is raised, the toe will be left behind until the required foot angle of the Mark Time is achieved. This will be maintained until the toe returns to the ground. In the raised position the tip of the toe will be immediately below the tip of the knee. The f oot shall be at an angle to the ground at a height from the ground of at least 15cm. The up and down movement, executed at an even speed, will occupy one beat of quick time. The placement of the foot flat (stationary Position) on the ground (after arriving with the mark time angle) will be on the emphasis of the beat of music.

STEP OUT FROM MARK TIME:

Having made the last beat of Mark Time when intending to step out on the march, the foot will travel forward in the same manner and at about the same speed (that is to occupy a half- beat of quick time) as it does in a normal marching pace. The arrival of the foot on the ground at the end of this pace must coincide with the beat of music to which the Team is marching. The hesitation necessary to make this possible (that is a half-beat of quick time), will be spent in the Stationary Position before stepping out. The arms will commence to swing when the step out is commenced.

ACTION HALT:

The rear foot will travel forward at the same speed and in the same manner as a normal marching pace (just clear of the ground), to rest flat in the Stationary Position (weight evenly distributed). The arms will drop to the sides in conjunction with the traveling foot reaching the Stationary Position.

The time taken by the foot traveling forward will be approximately one half beat. There will be a hesitation in the Stationary Position to complete the one beat of quick time for the Action Halt.

ACTION HALT RIGHT/LEFT TURNS:

For a Right Turn the action will commence from the extended position on the emphasis of the right beat. Left Beat: The left foot will be brought forward as in a normal marching pace to the ‘foot front position’ in which the foot is flat on the ground with the body weight evenly distributed over both feet. There will be a hesitation to complete the beat.

Foot Front

No.1

Position:

The left foot shall rest (directed to the line of march) sufficiently to the front of the right foot so that if the feet were pressed together, the instep of the front foot (left) would fit into the width of the ball of the right foot.

Right Beat: Hesitate for approximately half a beat prior to pivoting on the ball of the left foot to rotate the body through a turn of ninety degrees (or specified degree) and unless stipulated otherwise, simultaneously step out to arrive at the extended position in tempo.

Arms:

The arms shall drop to the sides in conjunction with the foot into.

Timing:

The armswing out shall be in conjunction with the step out pace arriving at the extended position on the emphasis of the beat. The length of hesitation is the Team’s choice, but must be uniform throughout the Team within a movement. To execute a Left turn substitute left for right and right for left.

NOTE:

The actions of the feet will be executed in a smooth manner on the successive beats of music.

The body weight will be evenly distributed throughout the movement - ie. Shoulders will be centred between both feet as the ball/heel contacts the ground on the first step across and will be centred over both feet at the completion of the second action.

The length of the sidepace will be 75.0cm.

TO SALUTE POSITION:

Left / Right Beats:

The Right hand will be brought as close to the head as the headwear will allow, palm to the front, fingers extended together, point of the fore- finger about 3cm above the Right eye or on to the leading edge of peaked headwear in front of the Right eye. The thumb will be alongside the fore- finger and the elbow will be in line and square with the shoulder alignment. Tips of the fingers, wrist and elbow, as near as possible in a straight line. This will be achieved by raising the opening hand, knuckles facing upwards, with a straight arm in a circular motion, so that the elbow remains in line with the shoulder alignment and when the arm is about parallel to the ground, turn the palm to the front, flex the arm sufficiently to achieve the hand position.

TO ATTENTION POSITION:

Right Beat:

The Right arm will fold down by the shortest route, at the same time closing the hand to arrive at the Position of Attention.

The length of the shortened pace will be 59.0cm approx.

PIVOT MARK TIME:

Action:

The pivot marcher will bend the knee relative to the angle required, and lift the toe just clear of the ground, toes in line.

The lifting and placement of the feet will allow the pivot to turn evenly through the required degree of the turn.

When turning to the Left, the Left foot will be placed on the same spot with the Right foot being placed around a very small arc (toes approximately in line).

Timing:

The pivot will synchronise the maximum lift of the heel with the action of the other marchers executing shortened paces.

The greater the angle, the higher the heel, the faster it must drop without exaggeration, force or over-bracing the knee, on the emphasis of the beat.

The movement of the lift and drop shall be relatively smooth.

There will be a transference of weight but no heel hesitation.

SHORTENED PACE:

Action:

The rear foot will travel forward in the same manner as in a marching pace to midswing.

The angle of the foot and the bend of the knee will progressively develop as the foot travels forward from midswing (toes in line) and will be relative to the pace taken.

The progression of the angle of the foot will peak at the extreme end of the pace and will be relative to the length of pace being taken.

The angle will determine whether the toe or ball contact the ground first, prior to the heel being lowered smoothly on the emphasis of the beat of music.

The speed will be relative to the length of pace being taken.

When wheeling, the foot in flight phase will follow the specified arc.

The shoulders will travel forward at half the speed of the foot in flight.

Timing:

The speed of the traveling foot will be regulated to allow the toe/ball to contact the ground fractionally before the emphasis of the beat.

The timing of the toe/ball contact will be uniform throughout the team.

HIGH KICK MARCH IN SLOW TIME:

ARMS:

The arms will remain at the Attention position throughout the High Kick March in Slow Time. The Left leg naturally straight, will swing forward from the hip joint directly forward until the heel is at least 50cm above the ground in a stylish Goose Step.

As the foot in flight passes any alignment of the stationary foot, the

leg/foot angle will extend so that the foot appears fully stretched at the High Kick position with the toes stretched downward. As the Left leg naturally straight swings down from the required height following the Lines of Force, the rear heel will progressively rise to carry the body weight evenly forward.

The ball of the foot in flight will contact the ground in a controlled manner, in line of march, sufficiently ahead of the emphasis of the beat to allow the heel to contact “in tempo”.

As the heel rolls down at the completion of the High Kick pace, the

weight will continue to move forward over the sole of the supporting foot. The Right leg will repeat the action of the Left leg.

LEGS:

Beat

Beat 2:

Beats 3 / 4:

The length of pace for the High Kick March in Slow Time shall be one half pace.

SLOW HIGH STEP:

NOTE:

The Slow High Step is a progressive Mark Time with armswing. The Mark Time High ‘At’ position will be top of thigh parallel to the ground. The length of the Slow High Step will be one half pace.

Left Beat:

Right Beat:

ARMS:

The traveling foot will reach the instep alignment of the supporting foot prior to being lifted directly to the Mark Time High ‘At’ position.

The selected angle will be achieved during the lift to the Mark Time

High ‘At’ position and will appear to be uniform throughout the team. The foot will be lowered forward to step one half pace, contacting the

ground ball first, sufficiently ahead of the emphasis of the beat to allow the heel to contact “in tempo”. Arms will swing smoothly from front to rear and rear to front, and will pass through the Attention Position as the traveling foot passes through midswing.

Arms will swing to the extended position in conjunction with the speed of the foot reaching the high ‘At’ position on the emphasis of the beat of music.

The timing of the arms will appear to be uniform throughout the team.

The height of the hands at the extended position will be above the top of the thigh.

LEFT TURN AT THE HALT:

Left Beat:

Pivot 90° to the Left on the heel of the Left foot and the ball of the Right foot, raising the Left toe sufficiently to just clear the ground, and the Right heel to do so, and keeping the weight of the body on the Left foot.

On the completion of this first movement, the Left foot will be flat on the ground with the weight of the body on it, Right heel raised.

Both feet will be in their own line of march.

Both knees will be straight.

Swing

The rear leg swinging fully from the hip will thrust the foot forward to the “Foot Front” position where a static pose will be adopted to take up the remainder of the beat.

The length of hesitation necessary to achieve this would be a little less than half a beat.

The foot as it commences its flight will develop the selected angle.

Feet in line of march, back leg vertical, weight balanced over the grounded foot.

The free leg will be naturally straight, with the foot held at the selected angle position, suspended just clear of the ground.

The foot will be about half a slow march pace in advance of the other foot.

The distance will be measured from toe to toe.

Steadiness and posture will be maintained.

The back heel is raised slightly to allow the body weight to move forward to the extended position (upper body midway between the two ankles).

At the same time, the pace is completed by gliding the leading foot forward.

The timing of the foot over the ground will be proportionately slower than the rate of slow march (the foot is only traveling about half a pace).

The ball of the foot makes contact with the ground at the extreme end of the pace.

The heel will strike the ground on the emphasis of the Left beat.

Before beginning the next “contact” phase, the weight of the body is transferred onto the leading foot and the rear foot is thrust forward at the commencement of the right beat to the “Foot Front” static position.

The knee of the traveling leg may relax if it is necessary to do so for the foot to just clear the ground.

The length of the Special Slow March pace will be 67.5cm.
