Junction Field Effect Transistor (JFET)

Aim: To study the characteristics of a Junction Field Effect Transistor including the different regions of operation and build JFET amplifiers. Note: DO NOT measure currents directly using the multimeter. Make voltage measurements and calculate the current. The may use ant type of FET , but be sure to get the specification on ECG. I. Identification and Characteristics of JFET Experiment: 1. Identify the three leads of the given N-channel JFET 2N5457 or equivalent. Use the convention of Fig.1. Drain characteristics: 2. Connect the circuit as shown in Fig. 2 with both VGG and VDD set at 0V. 3. With VGG at 0V, adjust VDD so that VDS = 1.0V. Measure ID. 4. Repeat Step 3 for VDS = 2V, 4V, 6V, and 8V. 5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for VGG = -0.75V and 1.5V. Transfer characteristics: 6. Set VDD = 10V. With VGS = 0, measure ID. This will be IDSS. Compare it with the value given in the datasheet. 7. Decrease VGS to 1V, -2V, etc. and measure ID. 8. When ID is approximately zero, note down the value of VGS. This will be the pinchoff voltage VP. Report: 1. Plot the output (drain) characteristics (ID versus VDS) of the JFET. 2. Plot the transfer characteristics (ID versus VGS).

II. Biasing of JFET Self-bias circuit Experiment: 1. Connect the self bias circuit of Fig. 3. 2. Measure the values of VG, VD and VS (with respect to ground). Report: Calculate the values of VGS and ID. Obtain the analytical value of ID using VGS and the JFET parameters measured in Part I. Compare the two.

Voltage-divider bias circuit Experiment: 1. Connect the circuit of Fig. 4. 2. Measure the values of VG, VD, and VS. Report: Calculate the values of VGS and ID. Obtain the analytical value of ID using VGS and the JFET parameters measured in Part I. Compare the two. III JFET Amplifier Experiment: 1. Connect the Common Source amplifier as shown in Fig. 5. Use a signal generator for Vs, and an oscilloscope to monitor Vs and Vo. 2. Set the signal generator frequency to 2kHz and a level of 0.5V peak-to-peak. 3. Record the waveforms of Vs and Vo and the their V amplitudes. 4. Connect a 500k potentiometer between Vs and C1. Adjust its value so the output amplitude reduces to 50% of the value measured in 3. Record this as the input resistance of the amplifier. 5. Reconnect the circuit of Fig. 5 as a Source Follower. Repeat Steps 2 to 4.
