The people below tried hard, but neither are correct. A one acre parking lot with only lanes and spaces could fit approximately 172 cars. Assuming we are going with box (90 degree) parking, the dimensions of the space required to park two cars is 504 (9 feet wide)(17.5 feet long + 21 foot travel lane + 17.5 foot space) square feet. 504 square feet equals .01157 acres (504 square feet x (1 acre / 43560 square feet )). So that's 2 cars per .01157 acres (504 square feet). 2 cars/.01157 acres = 172.86 cars / acre.
The second person was close; only he said 80 spaces when he meant 160 because the area which he divided by could each fit two cars, not one. ============================================= Assuming you use cars parked at 90 degree angles with a 21 foot lane and cars parked on each side, and each spot 8.5 x 18 feet, you can fit 30 cars. ================= NO ... approximatley 80 cars! Conversion was wrong. There are 43,560 square feet in one acre (roughly 208.7 feet by 208.7 feet). Parking requirements are roughly 9 feet by 18 feet (per car space) plus a 24 foot entry-exit dividing lane (see any typical "big box store" parking lot) with 90 degree parking. Thus: 18 feet (car space) plus 24 feet driving lane (width of which can reduce to something like 12 feet if parking space angle is increased), plus 18 feet (18+24+18), equals 60 feet. Then 60 feet times 9 feet width equals: 540 square feet. Actual spaces can increase significantly, or decrease with jurisdiction. So, without any required allowances for "green space", landscape requirements for trees or plantings which of course vary from governmental jursidiction to jurisdiction (see typically "Parking Stnadards" in your city or county regulations), then 43,560 square feet divided by 540 equals: 80.6 spaces. (268 cars if parked "bumper to bumper" allowing 9 feet x 18 feet with no driveway, lanes, and the "poor guy" parked in the center who would have to wait for everyone else to move their cars to provide a way out or in to his assigned space!)
