A Chico woman has tested positive for
West Nile Virus (WNV) according to Dr.
Mark Lundberg, Butte County Health Of-
ficer. This is the first confirmed human
case in Butte County for 2012. The older
woman developed neuroinvasive disease,
the most severe form of WNV.
We are seeing higher numbers of West
Nile activity throughout the state, said
Lundberg. The numbers are up for human
cases, dead birds, mosquito samples, hors-
es, and sentinel chickens, as compared to
this time last year. The public should take
extra care to avoid mosquito bites. Preven-
tion is the key to stopping the spread of the
virus.
As of August 10, 2012, WNV activity
has been detected in 32 of Californias 58
counties, with 8 of those counties reporting
human cases of WNV infection. In Butte
County, two dead birds have tested posi-
tive for the virus, as well as six mosquito
pools and one sentinel chicken.
All ages are vulnerable to infection
and should be educated about WNV pre-
vention. However, most individuals who
Butte County Public Health Conrms First
Human Case of West Nile Virus in 2012
become infected with WNV will not ex-
perience any illness. Individuals 50 years
of age and older have a higher chance of
getting sick and are more likely to develop
serious symptoms if infected. Recent data
also indicates that those with diabetes or
hypertension may be at greatest risk for
developing serious symptoms.
WNV is transmitted to humans and ani-
mals through a mosquito bite. Mosquitoes
become infected when they feed on infect-
ed birds. Residents can reduce the risk of
infection by taking precautions to prevent
mosquito bites and to protect their health:
Avoid spending time outside when
mosquitoes are most active, especially at
dawn and dusk.
While outdoors, wear long pants and
long-sleeved shirts when its possible.
Apply insect repellent containing
DEET, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, Picaridin
or IR3535 according to instructions.
Make sure doors and windows have
tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace
screens with tears or holes.

You have seen his hand-
made willow furniture for sale
at the old Cal-Trans weigh sta-
tion across from the Forbestown
crossing. The funny, witty guy
who builds chairs, garden plant-
ers and doll houses out of willow
and driftwood. Now, Grizzly
Jim is planning to retire at sum-
mers end.
Jim started his trade as a hobby
while working as a Merchandise
Manager for a large warehouse
store after graduating with both
an MBA and a Masters in psychology
from Oregon State University. To relax,
he would go into the woods and gather wil-
low wood. The park ranger would come
by and inquire as to what he was doing.
Jim said, It was just so peaceful there. I
worked in the woods. He started ham-
mering and learned to build through trial
and error. The first five years, he says,
were embarassing. I built a beautiful
chair. The Ranger came by and sat down
in it. It fell apart in four different direc-
tions. I realized I needed to build chairs
that were less decorative and more func-
tional. He took a request for a doll chair
and carved the ends which split because I
didnt know the nails.
Grizzly Jim to Retire
He perfected his trade and has sold his
furniture for the past 20 years to apple
nurseries and specialty shops. He once
rented one of his chairs to a film crew for
the movie Grizzly Adams. Currently,
his furniture is for sale at the Berry Creek
Mountain Market and his last day is Satur-
day, September 1.
Come join us in wishing James Bandy
well in his retirement.
Berry Creek Mountain Market is locat-
ed at 60 Whispering Pines Lane next to the
post office. Open Sat. September 1, 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m. (weather permitting). For more
information, call 589-2255 or visit us on
Facebook.

Introducing
Our New Youth
Programs
Coordinator
We are very pleased to an-
nounce the selection of our new
Youth Programs Coordinator,
Rachelle Irby. We welcome her to
PCTN and look forward to work-
ing with her.
Im very excited to be a part
of the PCTN team as the Youth
Programs Coordinator! I went to
Paradise High School and have
been happy to call Paradise my
home for the past 10 years.
I have a Bachelors Degree
from UC Davis in International
Relations with a minor in In-
ternational Agricultural Devel-
opment and a Masters Degree
from Humboldt State University
in Sociology. I have been teach-
ing Bahai Virtues Classes in the
community for about 6 years, in-
cluding our very successful sum-
mer camps with children between
the ages of 3-12, as well as for a
year when I was on my Year of
Service in Chile. I also had the
opportunity to participate in the
Curb2Creek project in Davis
where I was teaching high school
students about water pollution. I
enjoy reading, ballroom dancing,
and spending time at Lake Oro-
ville with my family.
I believe that education of our
young people is essential to solv-
ing any social problem. I hope to
assist in making the Ridge a safer
environment for children and
young adults to learn.

Reader Advisory: In order to avoid
misunderstandings, some advertisers do
not offer employment but rather supply
the readers with manuals, directories
and other materials designed to help
their clients establish mail order selling
and other businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance should you send any
money in advance or give the client your
checking, license ID, or credit card
numbers. Also beware of ads that claim
to guarantee loans regardless of credit
and note that if a credit repair company
does business only over the phone its
illegal to request any money before
delivering its service. All funds are
based in US dollars. 800 numbers may
or may not reach Canada.

Out & About in Oroville
Many people are looking for better
ways to live their lives, and right now it
seems that the world is becoming ever
more difficult to navigate. For some peo-
ple, their particular faith provides answers
that give them guidance and comfort. But
many people are looking for more and are
searching among the ancient wisdom tra-
ditions of the world for the answers that
make the most sense in their lives.
One ancient tradition is a set of 28 sym-
bols collectively called runes. Used by
Germanic peoples around the first and sec-
ond century A.D. these symbols eventually
became the foundation of our own alphabet.
Each symbol was associated with a god or
goddess and had a specific meaning. The
old runes are very arcane, difficult to work
with and many of the meanings are harsh
and dark, reflecting the reality in which the
people who used them lived.
The Runes of the Four Realms was
created by Suzanne Strisower, a Certified
Spiritual, Life and Career Coach and host
of the local radio program Living Well
Talk Radio, as a contemporary system
that consists of twenty-seven symbols
whose meanings are more relevant to our
times. In addition, the meanings are more
empowering and symbols that appear in
a particular reading are read as shifted
rather than reversed, a connotation that
some people find frightening or intimidat-
ing.
The runes were created over ten
years ago in a rather unusual fashion. As
Strisower relates, her boyfriend at the time
suggested that she make a set of runes. She
thought the idea was crazy, but she was
looking for a way to earn a right livelihood
from her land. She thought about all the
dead trees and how they could be fashioned
into rune blanks, if only she had a set of
symbols to put on them. One day, waiting
for some friends, she began to doodle on
some napkins, a habit she has had from her
days as a design student in college. Within
a half an hour, she had a set of 30 symbols.
Startled with this creative outpouring, she
was initially skeptical. What did these
symbols mean? Were they anything more
than just chicken scratch? How do they
work? It took two years for her to find the
answers.
Sitting at her computer she simply
asked, Which one do you want me to work
with and what does it mean? Somehow
she was given the answers. When all the
runes were named and the meanings clear,
she was shown the grid of energy, the
way that the runes worked. She still didnt
trust her intuition and the information she
received. So she did readings using the
rune set she developed to determine if they
worked in the real world situations and life
circumstances of people who sat for read-
ings. They did, in spades, said Strisower.
At that point, she wrote the book that ac-
companies the set of runes.
These runes are unique in that they
work with the four elementsearth, air,
fire and waterand in the four realms
our own human awareness and co-creative
ability, with the angels, the devas, or
spirits of growing
things, and the el-
ementals, the earth
spirits. Each of the
four elements has a
particular energetic
frequency that also
functions within the
four realms. This is
what comprises the
grid of energy.
In other oracu-
lar forms, such as
tarot, the cards can
be laid out in nor-
mal orientation or
upside down (re-
versed), but the
runes are unique in that they can be placed
either face up, signifying that the informa-
tion is conscious, or face down, indicating
that the questioner is unconscious of the
information.
Over the past eight or nine years, over
150,000 online readings using the rune set
were made through Strisowers website.
Although some people visited the site for
a reading only once, the majority of visi-
tors came regularly, usually once a month
or so, for a free reading. During that time,
Strisower says, she was honored to serve
people in their search for answers and
notes that most people asked sincere, au-
thentic questions. But she believes that it
is now more important to empower people
to find their own answers rather than just
provide information.
To that end, she became a Certified
Spiritual, Life and Career Coach. Her ex-
perience with the runes has shown her that
many people are lost and desperate for
answers that will give their lives mean-
by Alexandra Heath
Rune for Your Life
ing and purpose. Coaching operates on the
premise that each client has his or her own
answers and merely needs someone to sit
with them in a empowered space in order
for them to explore what has meaning for
themselves and to experience a direct con-
nection to divine wisdom.
Her recent books, 111 Inspiration Life
Purpose Quotes and Exercises to Find
Your Purpose in Life: A workbook to be
your best self and live your best life and
One Hundred and Eleven Tweetable In-
spirational Life Purpose Quotes: A book of
original thoughts, came out of two years
of sitting with the idea of purpose, doing
research, and discovering that the yearning
for finding purpose in
life is deep and wide-
spread. She noted that
half a billion people
search for the terms
life purpose or
finding purpose in
life every month on
Google. Clearly the
need to help people
find answers is huge.
In the workbook,
she outlines a process by which people can
identify their lifes purpose, which she de-
fines are the aim or intent of the energy
you put forth. The workbook is divided
into seven sections each dealing with a
particular area on the continuum of energy
depending on where an individual is in
his or her own life. The first five sections
outline the Stages of Purpose and then
work through what is called 3D or the
world of doing. The next two sections
work with 4DIntuition and Guidance,
how you receive information outside of
the conscious mind, such as dreams or
journaling and 5DMystical Energy and
Being about those peak experiences and
states of bliss in which it seems you are
lost to yourself and operating from a
higher, transcendent space. The final two
sections contain worksheets and a guide to
synthesizing the information from the pre-
vious sections and Resources and Next
Steps.
Even now she is taking her own next
step which she has identified as taking
this work out into the world, making the
concepts mainstream rather than hidden
and unspoken. To that end she hosts a two-
hour radio show Living Well Talk Radio
on KRBS, taking outreach to the airwaves.
She is hoping that things that mainstream
media ignore can be brought into aware-
ness, things like death midwifery, the phys-
ical problems associated with the magnetic
pole shifts, and so forth.
The rune set she created ten years ago
is functioning now as what she calls a
GPS for the soul helping people achieve
escape velocity out of the feelings of
being stuck in a reality they find increas-
ingly dysfunctional and broken. The runes
supply a tool to orient the self within the
real world so that
her lifes purpose
workbook can pro-
vide a road map
to guide people
in achieving the
purpose and mean-
ing that are sorely
needed and so ur-
gently yearned for
in their lives.

Wow, OMG, what a road trip we had!
Two weeks ago we did another road trip.
First off, Mom packed up the car to the
brim! I was sitting in my bed on the front
seat, window height! I could look out the
window without standing up! Amazing,
what I saw. First off, Dad would pull up
out of nowhere, and roll his window down
and call my name! How does he do that?
He wasnt in the car with us, but when we
stopped for gas, he just appeared? Then
when we stopped for lunch, there he was
again! Finally gured out he was in anoth-
er car! Dont know why, but we traveled
in two cars.
We nally arrived at my sissys house
in Morgan Hill! Yeah! cool weather, a
backyard to run in and lots of fun things to
do! My sissy takes me for a walk at night
downtown. We get to visit all the people
eating outside, and I even try to walk in-
side the restaurants. She, of course, stops
me, but I keep trying anyway! Love this
town, people stop to pet me and say Hi!
One night a friend stopped by her house.
She bought a little person to play with me.
Her name was Brooklynn. She was just
my size. I could jump up and give her a
kiss, and she petted me. I didnt know
there were people that small! We dont
have them in the desert. She was really
nice. And she had a baby brother. He had
poopy pants, but was cute anyway!
I tell you there is always something
happening at my sissys. Dad is building a
deck in her yard for her. All his friends are
helping him. There are two guys in their
60s one is his 70s, and the best worker is
50! Wow, these old guys are really doing
a great job! The rst morning, I stepped
out the back door, and didnt know which
direction to go. There was a framework
of boards everywhere! I had to jump over
the boards, then crawl under them to get
to the back alley, where I do my business!
I have privacy. No one can watch me. I
dont like an audience when I have to do
my business! Anyway, the next day, there
were a few boards to walk onto, then it
dropped off again. This seems to be tak-
ing a lot of time!
On Wednesday, we went to a parade!
Mom and Dad left early, and I walked over
with Kendel later! Never been to a parade!
There were all sorts of people walking and
playing music, then there were these large
animals with long tails that people were
riding! Mom said they were horses. Nev-
er seen a horse. They smell differently than
dogs. And they are big! They dont come
by the golf course. Only dogs and carts
there! Then there were these tiny miniature
horses, I tried to run out and see them, but
my sissy stopped me! Drat, it would have
been fun to play with them. People were
coming by all the time and tried to pet me,
three asked to take their picture with me. I
am very popular with the crowds.
After a few hours of this, we all got into
the car and went back to Kendels house.
Whew was I tired. Its hard being a ce-
lebrity. I needed a nap! Glad Dad is not
working on the deck today! He makes a lot
of noise! Mom and Dad went out to din-
ner with friends, and when they returned,
boy was there a lot of noise that night. I
heard Bang, rat-a-tat, bang, and on it went
into the night. At one point I was on the
bed with Mom, and I nally got down
and climbed under the bed. It was not as
noisy there. Boy what a loud night! Hope
it doesnt do that every night. Mom kept
trying to tell me it was July 4th, but I dont
know what that has to do with anything.
Finally the deck is nished! Boy, did
Dad do a great job! And Robert, the 50
year old guy, what a hard worker he is. He
moves so fast, I chase him. He thinks I
want to bite him, but I am just trying to
catch him, cause he moves so fast!. Al-
most caught him once, he put his nger out
to say no, and I grabbed it! Mom was
not happy with me at all!
Mom and Dad invited all Kendels
friends and the workers to a Deck Warm-
ing Party! And my little friend Brooklynn
came too! What a cutie she is. And she fed
me some caramel corn that Mom made. I
really like her! Next day, we were in the
car again, but this time, Dad was with us! I
guess we were heading home again! Well
I was right, but when we arrived, it was
115 degrees! Ugh! I wish we were back
up north again!
